Far and away, these are the most instructive videos out there. And to put out a mistake, own it and then discuss and teach the lessons learned shows a great deal of integrity.
Thank you kindly, Jay! All the best to you and Happy Turning! Kent
My lathe is sick (not the good kind of sick). I'm having severe withdrawal symptoms sitting here waiting for a part. The silver lining is that my shop is cleaner than it's been for a long time.
I'm glad you're OK! Cheers!
I feel for you Michael. Hope its better soon.
I got pretty good at catching the flying bowls in the air, until I learned how to correctly size the tenons. Nice video - sorry for the oops, but it was a great teaching experience. Love your work.
Thank you, Keith! Happy Turning!
Vicmarc offers stepped jaws for the 4 inch chuck with 72mm (=approx 3 inches)!
Been there, done that. I didn’t have enough left on the foot, and had to do an inside mortise to remount the bowl.
Good info, Kent. As usual we'll explained.
Thanks 👍
Thanks for a great video and analysis. I have been starting on some live and natural edge bowls too, and have really noticed what a PITA the pith can be sometimes!
Thank you, Matthew. Happy Turning!
Sometimes if you're concerned about the tenon strength, you can apply super glue around the edge of the tenon first which will strengthen it. Another option is to use the foot as the tenon and use the larger jaws. But things happen. It really helps to practice all your cuts so you can execute them without standing in front of the piece. Great showing the process when things don't go as planned.
Hi Kent, Nova sells in westernEurope 3 inch jars for their chucks.
Regards
I appreciate this video very much. As someone relatively newer to woodturning compared to people with decades of experience, I see everything through the eyes of "expanding my learning curve." The unexpected can be our best teachers. Thanks for keeping it real. Beautiful bowl, by the way.
Well said, Kim! Yes, those "mistakes" are gems of information, if we pay attention. ;) All the best to you and Happy Turning! Kent
Very encouraging, thank you, Kent!
Thanks RY. Happy Turning!
Administer makes a 80 mm jaw that is 3 1/8 inch tenon. You would probably have to buy a different chuck to use them.
Was the wood talking to you as you popped it off the chuck? Usually you can hear the tone change when you go too fast.
Good Lessons Learned Video Kent. 😉
Lowell
Thank you, Lowell. Happy Turning!
Glad to see that it is not just me that has oopsies…. I broke the side out of my bowl today when I went to clean up the glue drops on the outside of the bowl
Yup, we all have our moments, Donna. ;) All the best to you and Happy Turning! Kent
Nice finish. I was surprised you kept as much of the pith that you did. Was also anxious as you made pull cut away from center. Don't ask me how I know what happens. Turned out real nice. Inspiration. Thanks for sharing
Kent, my Teknatool SuperNova chuck has 2”, 3” and 4” jaws available. Thanks for the great videos, even when you fail.
Thank you for writing and sharing, Jon! Happy Turning!
Thanks for the tips about what happened and how to recover.
Happy to help, Lewis! Happy Turning!

Not a keeper? It’s beautiful. Auction it off to folks that put in comments then.
Thanks for the video, it was a pity about the disaster in what was otherwise a very nice bowl. Incidently the British firm, Axminster, make a set of jaws that grip a 3" tenon.
And Vicmarc makes stepped jaws for its chucks.
It's funny, Kent. Just before I came into the house and saw your video, I just had a tenon break on me. I was turning a piece of oak from a tree that fell on its own. It is an end-grain turning and the tenon was mainly pith and just didn't hold just as I was finishing the exterior shape. To fix mine, I ended up having to change to a mortice to remove the pith and get a good hold in good wood. Like yours, when I formed the mortice, the center got off slightly and I had to reshape the exterior. I just got that done and it was time for lunch, so I came in the house and found your video ... surprise, surprise, your video included a tenon breaking like I just had happen. Like you, I had my safety gear on and had no injuries. In fact, my piece didn't fly off the lathe because the tenon twisted off instead of shearing. Fortunately, I have not yet hollowed the interior so my mishap will not impact the interior of my bowl.
Looking forward to your next video and would really like to have lunch with you sometime - your neighbor up the road (just a little north on 301)
LOL, maybe it was National tenon breaking day. ;) Happy Turning!
You have made the call ( to industry ) for a three inch chuck. Let us know when the call is answered. I want one too !
Will do David. ;) Happy Turning!
I think the vic marc step jaws give you the option you want. Why not just go to the 4" tenon?
Nice, I need to check that out. Happy Turning!
Axminster chucks are great and with stainless steel jaws, no tanen black marks.
And, Record Power, 62329, Power Grip Large Dovetail and Deep Gripper Jaws for the SC3 and SC4 Chuck
Thank you for writing and sharing, Jay!
Great lesson Kent. I have a Oneway chuck that has 3 inch jaws, but it is over 50 years old and I do not know if they still make them.
Jack, I'll have to check around for one. Thank you for writing and sharing! Kent
What? What a launch!
Very glad you’re okay. Be careful, bud!
Thank you! ;) Happy Turning!
When an experienced wood turner such as yourself pushes the boundaries and has a mishap it shows things can still go wrong if you try break rules even a little bit, hopefully less experienced and novice turners watch and as you say learn from your mistake, a shame it went wrong it would have been a very nice piece, also if a manufacturer sees this and produces 3 inch jaws could help many people, so inconclusion a worthwhile video on several fronts. 👍
Thank you, Lewis. Happy Turning!
Have you looked at Nova chuck systems. I believe they have a 75 mm set of dovetail jaws.
I would have sanded the step on the inner edge smooth with a coarse, say 60 grit paper with power sanding and used that as a lampshade. I have made such from several, failed bowls.
I was wondering why you left so much of the pith. I would still have tried to save the bowl. Mistakes can sometimes be turned into features, like a groove, cove, bead etc.
Hey Kent love your videos loved this bowl by the way I have learnt a lot from watching, thank you. Kent what do you do with all your shavings?. I have a lot and don’t know what to do with it all…..
Thanks Pete! I compost shavings for the garden and I fill low spots in the yard and burn some. Happy Turning!
I like the thin wall
Thanks. Happy Turning!
Hi Kent, love your channel, but this has nothing to do with this video. I have an idea for a video and thought I'd contact you. I went to a turning show at a local gallery where I know several turners from 2 camps, those that hate sanding and those that don't. The guys that hate sanding are obvious because the quality of their finished piece suffered greatly. I personally find sanding therapeutic and take pride in doing a thourough job.
Pete, check this out ua-cam.com/video/cPA55pqozFs/v-deo.htmlsi=WMDP4fO4Pju_0_EP
Thanks Kent. You nailed it again.
Kent - what do you do with the cutoffs from the bandsaw? Ive got a million of them and trying to think up projects since are often still pretty cool pieces
Smaller bowls and then fire pit fuel. ;)
Have not had a tenon fail in a while. Working on some twice turned walnut bowls, Mortice method, and went from a cute little walnut bowl to a cute little walnut funnel :-( DOH! Homer moment LOL
;) Yeah, we've all been there too. Happy Turning! Kent
Do you think the dovetail angle was a little too steep?11:28. Is there a technique to eye-balling the angle?
It might have been. If it's off a few degrees one way or the other it usually doesn't matter too much. Happy Turning!
Hi Kent, good explanation about this fail. I have a question about making blank on the bandsaw. What kind of blade guide do you have on the band saw (I see you have bearing guide) ? I have a BX18 Laguna and the ceramic guide it's not the best thing for this job. What the size of your blade and the TPI (I supposed it's better with 3 or 4 TPI).
Thanks for all the videos.
Daniel Lacoutardes Gravel from Quebec, Canada.
Thank you, Daniel. Factory guides and 3 tpi, 1/2" x .035"
I know you were going for a natural edge, but since that didn’t work out, couldn’t you have just trimmer the rim down past the lip that was created and salvaged the bowl? That looked like too nice of a piece of wood to just scrap.
I had the same thought but I think Kent wanted to show what the finished bowl would have looked like, he could still remount it and make a shallow bowl now, do a new video called salvaged piece.
My thoughts exactly.
Wilson, yeah the bowl would have been very small and there would have been the sap wood edge too. And yes, I wanted to show how to attempt a recovery. All the best to you and Happy Turning! Kent
I’ve had a bowl or 2 come off the chuck. Never a good thing. After looking at the aftermath, I found the tenon or mortise to not be formed well. Lessons learned big time. I have since learned to never stand in the line of fire if at all possible.
Robert, yes, line of fire bad. ;) Happy Turning!
Right before it happened, from camera angle, the wobble is very noticable. Very nice recovery after that.
Thank you. Happy Turning!
Hi Kent. I periodically crack tennons and mortises. I think I may be over tightening. I'm not sure. How can I tell how much pressure to use?
It's an experience and feel thing. Happy Turning!
Newbie here. I’ve just started using my new M2 cryo 1/2 inch bowl gauge on a piece of black olive. It’s wet extremely dense, hard and heavy. Well it came off the chuck several times and I had to start over. Each time I had to re-true and my once nice sized bowl is getting smaller and smaller. This has been frustrating. Is it me? My cheep chuck? The wood? Seems like I followed your tenon advice but I’m picking the blank off the floor too many times. This is happening while hollowing out the inside.
Rand, good questions. It's probably a combination of factors. It happens to all of us. I highly suggest using waste wood to learn and practice. Once you are comfortable, then get into the good species. Check out the new Bowl Gouge Mastery online course www.TurnAWoodBowl.com/mastery Everything you need to know is covered in that course. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Super Nova makes a 3” chuck
No offense, but I was glad to see that the same misfortunes that plague me also get the pros. but it turned out great. Question though, when I turn I have to wear a glove on my left hand because the shavings coming off the bowl are so hot. Am I doing something wrong?
Yup, we're all in the same boat. ;) Happy Turning! Hot shavings are normal from hard, dry wood. That's why I also wear a left hand glove. All the best to you and Happy Turning! Kent
Thanks@@TurnAWoodBowl
Hey Kent. I noticed when you take on and off a truck you don’t deal with the screw inset/Allen key. Is it not necessary to use this? Thanks.
Not unless you're turning in reverse.
Michael, the chuck tightens with the normal rotation. A set screw is only necessary if you run in reverse. Happy Turning!
Kent do use ear plugs or sound reduction of some kind? If so what brand and type. Thank you, Scott
Scott, I don't wear any. I have hearing aids and I will lower them if needed. Typically it doesn't get that loud at the lathe. Happy Turning! Kent
Thank you
Since we knew what was going to happen, I began watching the foot. The piece began to wobble before it flew off 😢
It still looks like a great bowl.
Thank you, Mark! Happy Turning!
