Just wanna recognize how insanely consistently good Topher's videos are - POV drives are hard to get right, as evidenced by the abundance of 'just ok' POV content out there, but you have perfected the formula, and I love the fact that these aren't overproduced with a ton of camera angles, b-roll, etc. Keep doing what you do!

Honestly, the 2.4 turbo has been out for a few years in their other cars and it seems to be pretty reliable so far. It was their V6 replacement so I'm sure they poured a crap ton of R&D money into developing it. Its actually pretty smooth and less rattlty compared to the 2.5NA. Hope it can make the 200-300k+ mileage the V6 was known for.
@skytechenterprise9906 Ideally yes but if you just detune the engine and don't make dumb engineering decisions, you can definitely make a turbo engine last. Might only get 200k out of it instead of 300-400k but that's still good enough today I'd say. Even some Ford 3.5L ecoboost engines have made it past 300k miles. It's like AWD: improves performance but repairs will cost quite a bit.
Yeah these turbo 4’s will be nowhere near as reliable I bet. I guarantee you they’ll have major issues over 100k miles. Gone are the days of the Tacomas lasting 300k+ with relatively no major issues.
Fun fact: The race between James Bond and Xenia in the movie Goldeneye was originally between Bond's DB5 and Xenia in a Toyota Tacoma but they found the Tacoma to so easily out perform the DB5 in the curves that they couldn't achieve any level of suspense. So they replaced it with a Ferrari.
Probably be a few years until I get rid of my 2016 Tacoma. (236k miles and still standing strong) Waiting for possible issues to be resolved first and true ownership reviews. Nonetheless this is a great design and can’t wait.
Smart sound effecter is working, combination of noise canceling system and face sound generator makes this V8 like rumble sound, cancelling the engine noise pulsefully makes the strong beat and adding some reeving fake noise.
Introduce a turbocharged truck to the NA market, everyone loses their minds worried about reliability. Offer them a Hilux or Land Cruiser, they won’t shut up about how reliable they are. Toyota knows how to make turbo engines, gas and diesel, performance and commercial. Turbocharging in and of itself won’t be the deciding factor in whether or not this engine is reliable.
The prices aren’t that much different for the regular models. The SR5 4x4 is $38,000. Which is a few grand higher than the prior old model. The trd off road starts around $45,000 which is about what you’d pay for the old model
Kinda funny to see how much backseat room there is in this Tacoma. The last time I was in a Tacoma it didn't even have a backseat let alone have one that's comparable with my '11 Tundra.
Honestly, especially the hybrid- same with the Tundra. Ik turbos and hybrids have more stuff to fail(and it will fail, eventually) than a NA engine, BUT, it's Toyota. They're known for their hybrids, so I'm not worried at all.
You had mentioned that the 8 speed transmission is good. Is it better than the 6 speed of the previous generation? You said it was a huge improvement, did it seem like it was hunting for gears? on the highway?
How is the road noise? Wasn't that a big complaint with previous generation models? The engine sounds pretty noticable here. I want to say I saw on another video, the lady said they incorporated white noise into the cabin. I previously owned a '13 Scion FR-S and disliked the road noise, so a little nervous to go back to a noisy daily driver.
Seems like the turbo 4 is revving maybe 1000 RPM higher than the 3.5 in general accelerations… could that pose an issue or inherent with 4 cylinders at this weight?
That's not true, the 3.5 actually has to rev higher than this 2.4T, the 2.4T makes 317lbft of torque at just 1,700RPM, the 3.5L makes 265lbft way up at 4,600RPM, that old 3.5L was underpowered you had to rev the crap out of that V6 to get torque, this 2.4T won't need to rev up during mild acceleration and you most likely won't need to floor it to get up to speed, with that 3.5L it was foot to the floor every time you'd accelerate.
Every time I buy a vehicle with all the latest tech....all it does is have problems. I cant imagine that giant screen and the hybrid engine. I'm Beginning to like the slightly older vehicles so I can stay out of the dealers shop.
18.2 gas tank vs 3rd gen has a bigger 21.1 gas tank…and both Tacomas get almost the same mpgs..meaning 2024 more trips to gas stations.. Why NO gas hood struts? My 2001 Toyota Camry came with gas hood struts in 2001… ? No gas struts..reducing over all cost and reduce weights..? Lol
Drivability may be the only thing that will convince me to sell my 2019 Pro. Ride is great but transmission is absolute dog shit. This 2.4 sounds better and is a huge improvement the inside. Will wait until the 2026 model comes out though.
LOL. Maybe you want to take another listen to this engine. I thought it was the worst sounding, gravely, loud, unrefined engine I’ve heard in decades. Maybe it doesn’t translate well to audio. But I’ll tell you, when you opened the door from outside the truck, the little pop from the door (seals) exudes quality. Nice.
Toyota Alabama officials announced that the engines for the all-new Toyota Tacoma will be made right there in Huntsville (Alabama), but set to be manufactured at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing plants in Baja California (TMMBC) and Guanajuato (TMMG1). Basically this is a North American truck.
My uncle owns a cab company and has turned basically every car out there into a cab and pushed their engines to their limits. Anything with a super charger or a turbo was a POS. Great at first! But not worth a f*** in terms of reliability.
a lot of people don't know but these are faster than Bugattis believe it or not trust me, I don't have a reason to lie to you well they are faster than bugattis from 1930's
Out of all the updates, remodeling, and upgrading that Toyota did with the 4th gen Tacoma, I still prefer the 3rd gen Tacoma model design over the 4th gen. Am I biased? Yeah, but personally, I adore the 3rd gen sleek design over this one.

This, it's been the baseline powerplant for Lexus for a few years now. It's solid and reliable.
No where near as reliable as naturally aspirated... Unless it's a diesel, I don't want a turbo. Recipe for disaster.

Considering the Tacoma was literally brand new at the time of filming, interesting little joke in terms of relevance. (Just not available in Monaco 😟)
So your driving impression is the best I've seen so far.
This gets me excited for the 4runner.
I appreciate the under hood idle and sounds during a variety of acceleration. Great content!

nice to see a cameo of savagegeese!!

SavageGeese in the background lol. I was not expecting that!
Coming with giant markups to a dealer near you
Search for a tsrp dealership near you. There’s tons of them
I never was fan of tacomas. But I really hope to be able to buy this gen

I wanna see some snow action
Funny listening to people whinge about a 4 banger in a Taco, considering many believe the 22R and 22RE were the best engines to be put in a "Taco."
4 cylinders are just much slower. There’s no way around it.
Finally Tacoma is a modern vehicle
Not terrible. But can’t imagine how expensive these will get up to.
The TRD pro with the fancy seats will probably be very expensive

Sounds great, and I drove the crap out of it wicked awesome dude. I don't like the look of the Tundra but this Tacoma it's sweeet
Classic Toyota engine rattle, sounds like something is falling apart but still runs forever. I just ordered one today, TRD Sport 4x4 double cab.
Wow, that sounds really good for a 2.4. The body is growing on me as well, excited to see the Hybrid version to see what that can do.
Tht sounds like shit🤣
Toyota 👑

I wish the infotainment screen was bigger.
I doubt the 2.4T will be as reliable as the V6 but then again, this is Toyota after all. Like Honda, they make some of the best engines in the world.
Honestly, especially the hybrid- same with the Tundra. Ik turbos and hybrids have more stuff to fail(and it will fail, eventually) than a NA engine, BUT, it's Toyota. They're known for their hybrids, so I'm not worried at all.
That engine note is very Subaru-esque. Not fond of the looks other than the Trail Hunter. Will have to see one in person tho.
You should drive the 2021 civic ex hatch, that is my daily driver I love it
I would be interested to test the seat height now. I had a second gen and at just over 6ft I could never get comfortable.
Interior is nice,
I’m legit tempted to get one but I don’t wanna be a guinea pig with one of these trucks especially regarding that turbo 4 cylinder engine
You had mentioned that the 8 speed transmission is good. Is it better than the 6 speed of the previous generation? You said it was a huge improvement, did it seem like it was hunting for gears? on the highway?
I bet uses 91 octane for towing, most of these motors say to do that. Any word if its air to air, air to water for innercooler?

Wow cool. How about try to tow with that tacoma
Bro its sound amazing for 4 cylinder how they do it?
The engine is working harder.
24 mpg highway in the 2WD model? That's not good. Is it because of the trim level?

Yes I have one and I broke my arm trying to open one

It sounds better than the 4 cylinder Silverado
It’s actually funny that a little Mazda CX-30 Turbo has more torque than this.

No 😢 Throttle House reviewed a F-350. This is a Tacoma
