Man this is over a decade long, I remember watching this randomly on HBO when it aired, Artie Lang was hilarious, I loved how he just took control and shit all over Joe Bucks show. 😂
Joe and Artie are good friends and Joe said in an interview later that he asked Artie to not hold back and lay on everyone as much as he could to make it interesting. If he hadn't it would have been the worst show on the planet.
For those who don't know, Artie and Joe knew each other, and Joe beforehand more or less told Artie to "be edgy and go for it." Artie wanted to make an impression on HBO and almost immediately afterward said he was sorry for going overboard.
Wow thats not what happened at all what the fuck are you talking about? Artie spent the next week going on other shows telling people off for saying it wasn't funny. 😂 what are you talking about!?
This story has a lot of inaccuracies. First of all Artie didn’t know Joe Buck that well, Artie only showed interest of joining the show cause of Joes father who was considered a “legendary” sportscaster. An executive producer of HBO Sports by the name of Ross Greenberg told Artie before hand to be the extra energy if things or the convo slowed down with the other two guests that were on the show. Artie didn’t want to make an hood impression on HBO or please them. The only reason he went all out cause he assumed HBO was completely “no holds barred” but learned that wasn’t the case but he also never “apologized immediately” he actually doubled down on his position if anything.
Haha! It's funny that never noticed that. Thanks! I always kida wondered why the audience laughed after Buck asks if they have a picture of them. Now, I know.

artie is a lieing junky, all he does is fight everyone because he is a miserable fuck. hes not funny. and sucked on the joe buck show everyone there thought he was a asshole. so think what you want to. even artie knew he fucked up read his last book.
I love how you can immediately identify the thin-skinned insecure people by how offended they are by Artie's humor. Their silly outrage over nothing but (admittedly crass) jokes betrays them.
Artie's been pretty open about this -- Joe asked him, just before air-time, to "really go at [me], liven things up." It seems from the on-screen reaction that Joe got a little more than he bargained for, but, I mean, he directly asked for it, and, given Lange's previous history, should have known what he was getting himself into.
Joe defended Artie afterwards, and even admitted he told Artie to go after him and just be himself, but said that he still though Artie went a little too far. Which is obvious by the way Joe kept getting offended every time Artie made fun of him. I think it was all hilarious, as did Jason Sudeikis who was laughing his ass off. But I will also admit that Artie could have reigned himself in a little bit, at least for half an hour, not immediately during the first 10 minutes. Even Artie will admit he got a little out of lie. Apparently he interrupted Buck and Greenberg's comments to mean he should turn the show into a crass Roast of Joe Buck haha. I hope Artie is doing ok, I've had opiate addiction issues myself and it's hard to be "normal", especially if your job is to be crude or absurd. He went off the rails because he was feeling great off of vicodin and whiskey, thinking he could do and say whatever he wanted and it would be great. This segment did sidetrack his career for a bit, but it's a drop in the bucket for the amount of times he's derailed his own self interests haha. Still love him though.
It was weird. It came across as two guys trading hostile barbs with each other and there was no one controlling the flow of the broadcast. It was funny as a Joe Buck roast. Then you realize it's supposed to be a Bob Costas/Tonight show vibe or something. Artie was probably coked out of his mind and Joe is not the kind of guy to A) host a talk show or B) someone who knew how to rein in Artie.
Fun fact: Artie Lange is a pretty damn good athlete. I was in a program back in 2019 that I guess drug court had sent him to and we played basketball together and the guy doesn't miss a shot. He's also a pretty good quarterback. He threw me a few touchdowns. We also played softball together and he was good at that as well. Apparently he had a scholarship or something like that in baseball. Can't remember what he had said about that though. He's a chainsmoker of Marlboro Reds (which he wouldn't mind letting anyone bum one off of him), and wore a beat up pair of white low top air force ones with black shoe laces. Anyway, I know I'm all over the place with this, but he was just a normal guy who was freaking hilarious with the stories he would tell. It's a time in my life that I will never forget especially since a couple months of it were spent with Artie Freaking Lange 😊
Artie once challenged a female collegiate star to a one-on-one BB game when he was on the Stern show. Howard called the game over the radio. Artie led by two or three points but got tired when he scored his 12th or 13th point and ended up losing. He was in his thirties and she was a senior. Your story is definitely credible.
I am reading Artie's book right now. For all the crap he has gotten about this show, Paul Rudd (Joe's friend from high school) told Artie, "What you just did was legendary". He said that right in the middle of the interview. So there.
Joe Completely brought this on himself. The second he said “here is somebody who isn’t on his guard, Artie Lange”, he was done. Taking a stab at a professional stand up comedian, especially Artie who will say anything, was such a bad Idea and he paid the price!!
Oh the irony now that Sudekis is an Emmy award winning A-Lister and Artie…Has a caved in nose and a fan base that hangs off every word he said 10 years ago…
Artie is hilarious. How good would this have been without him? He's a guy who's not going to play pretend time with anyone. He was just trying to relax and joke around and have fun, seemed as if no one understood that.
Jason and Todd both became way more successful than Artie. More rich. More healthy lives. But one thing for sure. When they die, they won’t be considered legends.
That was fucking funny man, I understand the issue here; but this was really funny. I'm so glad Joe didn't take this to heart and realized he was only goofing and having fun.
Honestly, Joe Buck was the problem. Artie would say he was great and so was his father and Joe would respond like "is this going to take long". Or even after his hilarious story, honoring Joe's father, Joe Buck would just be like "Paul can I talk to YOU please?" Like dude, the guy has the audience going wild. And he's complimenting you? What in the unholy ring of hell are you getting on him for? For breaking up your segmented questions about TMZ crews that filmed Paul "at some point, in some place". Artie honestly wasn't at fault here, he was just incredibly good at defending himself and Joe wasn't. It's funny because this would have been an absolute cannonball of a first episode if Joe Buck was actually mature enough to let Artie riff. My favorite part of this story is when he came out later saying that he was actually cool with it and told Artie to go hard on him. Like, yeah right dude. You were bitter the entire time.

This whole "event" was forgiven (but no way would it ever be forgotten) and both men's recollection and written description of how it went down reveals just how cool and professional they both are. For Artie, who is not just visibly, but admittedly fucked up on indeterminate opiates, it's amazing he was able to even keep up his end of the conversation. And Buck gets kudos for not smacking him at some point on or off-camera.
“You can’t do that SIR! Sir you cannot do that!” Joe Buck sounding like the manager of a bath and body works or something. You could tell how in over his head Joe Buck was on this show even without Artie Lange going for his throat but it was especially bad here, he could not handle Artie even slightly.
How did Artie think that Joe appreciated him after this appearance. The lack of self awareness is mind boggling. Joe was mortified lol. Artie was pretty funny but I just can't believe he initially thought everyone there was happy with it.
I am so glad that history was vindicated. Artie’s funniest joke in retrospect is his quip to Joe Buck’s four-chin diss. “Four? You mean the number of shows you won’t get to?” History will remember Artie as a comedian legend. I come back to this clip once a year. It’s awesome watching the bland sportscaster, whose only job is to be non-controversial, squirm in his chair. He is totally incapable of taking back control of his own show. To be fair, Joe tried fighting back but he just wasn’t equipped for the challenge.
ARTIE LANGE IS THE GREATEST STORY TELLER EVER...PLEASE ARTIE GET CLEAN FOR GOOD & ASK THE GREAT HOWARD STERN TO TAKE YOU BACK...RADIO IS NOT THE SAME WITHOUT YOU TWO TOGETHER 😍

3 great guest and he's talking about his "favorite website TMZ"
Holy shit, no wonder Artie said fuck it.
“Four? You mean the number of shows you won’t get to?”
History will remember Artie as a comedian legend. I come back to this clip once a year.
It’s awesome watching the bland sportscaster, whose only job is to be non-controversial, squirm in his chair. He is totally incapable of taking back control of his own show.
To be fair, Joe tried fighting back but he just wasn’t equipped for the challenge.
Funny thing is the show never made it to 4 episodes this was the final one
I remember this like yesterday. First time I heard of Artie.
"Crash and Burn" brought me here. FIYAAA!!!
Me too!
Artie gave this show every bit of the respect it deserved
ARTIE LANGE IS THE GREATEST STORY TELLER EVER...PLEASE ARTIE GET CLEAN FOR GOOD & ASK THE GREAT HOWARD STERN TO TAKE YOU BACK...RADIO IS NOT THE SAME WITHOUT YOU TWO TOGETHER 😍
Still watching this in 2024.
1:45 holy shit, Buck's face was priceless. Pure shock and embarrassment
Heres my Artie impression: "fuck fuck fuckity fuck fuck."
Paul Rudd was a split second away from drinking Artie's water with the cigarette butt in it lmao.
I'm sorry but the description of Joe Buck's dad was awesome. He was giving his dad props. Best part of the show in my estimation.
