I have mixed feelings. On one hand, TREMENDOUS gratitude to you for offering this, love everything about all the priceless information that's being shared... on the other hand, 360p?!?! Are you KIDDING ME?!?!? That about covers it. Thanks for your time and cheers.
For those interested who don't catch my response to a detractor below. The interviewer is Kim Batterham ACS, a 25 year veteran, award winning film and television director and head of cinematography at AFTRS where the interview was held. Possibly, due to Kim being Australian, it may have seemed that he was a little too humble compared to other Hollywood based directors or compares, but not lacking confidence or knowledge I can assure you. AFTRS is recognized as one of the most prestigious film schools in the world, drawing students from every corner of our planet. EDIT: I haven't attended film school other than to assist students, or be an audience member of events.
I really appreciate this video, huge thanks to the maker. But 360p resolution for a Cinematography Masterclass is not ideal, especially on the film clips. Really hope to see a clearer version of this video.
Fascinating interview but frustrating that there are not far more clips from the films they're talking about. I presume it's because the studios demand a lot of money for the rights to show them.
In cinematography, flashing is the exposure of the film negative to uniform light prior to exposing it to the scene. Along with enabling contrast control to bring out detail in darker areas, it can also be used to add a color cast to shadows without significantly affecting the highlights.
@@cinematographersoncinemato1199 See McCabe & Mrs. Miller (Dir: Robert Altman, DP: Vilmos Zsigmond) for an early and rather extreme example that is quite stunning.
Is it just me or does Roger seem annoyed throughout this interview. I feel like the guy giving the interview is asking poor questions and really doesn't know anything about what he is talking about. I wish they got another DP or someone who knew their stuff to interview.
Ive worked with Deakins and have watched him in several interviews and this is pretty normal for him. He’s very confident when working but he can be a bit awkward and modest when talking about his work. Great man and fun to work with.

This is a priceless interview...so SO much to enjoy.
As an Aussie I'm devastated I missed this. Big fan of the cinematographer and the man
Don’t feel bad you’re about six years late
AFTRS have some dead set amazing events open to the public ay!
I love the way Deakins knows when to analyze and when to play.
Only 15 comments? as a recent film school grad I can say that Roger is a legend and a pleasure to listen to.
Every frame of his work is pure oooof. Amazing guy!

Love Roger Deakin's work. Genius.
Step 1-10: Spend a lot of time in prep!

I think a Roger Deakins and James Gray collab would be incredible

The Train scene and soldiers attack atonce that created amazing master Roger deakins perfect action super.
I'm only 9 minutes in and it already gets a thumbs up from me.
Really great conversation, thanks for the video guys 🙌

A light legend 👍
I’d do anything to see that 4 hour version
I'd do anything to be on a set with Roger...
he is legend
The 1917 scene...the one part, if the single shot movie, where the main character runs through the ruins, is fantastic, because of the music. Imo
1917 was just fantastic
Bleach bypass was ENR in Italy
That should have been phrased as a question.
😍😍
what does "flash the negative" mean. Does this have to do with film cameras? I'm 21 and I shoot digital lol

Cinematographers on cinematography thank you for the reply
Uhhh... Yes. FILM. You can't "flash" digital.

@@cinematographersoncinemato1199 I assume you can replicate this effect with a high quality raw file and a program such as resolve?

its just you! this was fantastic!!
On the contrary, the interviewer is excellent and OBVIOUSLY knows his stuff... Your perception is way off.
Just learned Deakins dropped out of the new Dune. Noooooo!!! I now fear the worst...
Why did he drop out...??
Shoot as little as possible.
😂😂😂
This is a priceless interview...so SO much to enjoy.
