    Please make more videos like this!! It helps immensely.
    Not to hate on other youtubers, but ive noticed a lot of videos about art business are basically made by people who make money from making videos about the art business lol. Its really nice to see someon who I trust actually makes money from their art talking about the subject. Id like to see more videos on how you do conventions, ship prints and which of your pieces tend to sell the most often!! 🙏🏻

    Awesome advise!! Great video!!
    I'm just starting but my Fab 5 and what I'm working on are:
    1 - Courses
    2 - Memberships (like Patreon)
    3 - UA-cam
    4 - Licensing (hopefully)
    5 - Chaos, like you! I'd eventually love to do kickstarter products, and books, or different things like that.

    Hi! I opened your channel to pick a follow along livestream and practice a little, and this playlist about business came up... It's crazy, I've been struggling with this for the past weeks. My name is Fernando and I'm an illustrator / graphic designer living in Brazil, and my sources of income vary a lot, especially this year.
    In the first half of the year, my main source of income was by managing different companies social media, like making the layout for posts. I hated this very much. a major client of mine didn't deal well with the pandemics so they had to interrupt my work in the beginning of the year. And I refused some other clients because I really don't like doing this
    I make freelance illustrations, which I like better, but the amount of work varies a lot because I'm not too good with networking and prospecting new projects. most of the work I've done in this area was by indication.
    My third source is working with layout. This one does not vary much, I do the layout for a local monthly newspaper.
    Lastly, about my work as an artist HAHA the only income I got was by participating in a competition. With the end of the year and my other areas struggling a bit, I've been thinking a lot about this. I really enjoy drawing but I don't know how to pursue a career as an artist. I don't even know if I could. To create my '5 avenues' as an artist would be the "dream". I've been drawing a lot more in 2022 in comparison with the past couple of years. But I never found "my voice" as an artist. I tried to put an 'art vs artist' together and I didn't even posted it, because there were too many different things together. I've been thinking about how to change that and trying to see a clearer path for me. So yeah, I've been kinda depressed this month haha anyway, sorry for the long text and thank you for this video, hearing all of that from an artist that I admire so much helps believing it could be possible. and thanks to that driver as well for the great talk!

    • @vonnart
      @vonnart  Рік тому +5

      This is great and I hope you eventually find what your remaining avenues can be! It is definitely possible and don't give up on yourself! I always believe that the only way to fail as an artist it's a stop trying. And when it comes to finding your own style, a lot of that we'll come the more you create in the more you make intentional decisions while you work to create an aesthetic that suits your soul. So definitely keep it up and I wish you nothing but the best in the future! And I'll do my best to continue making videos that will hopefully continue to inspire!

    • @vonnart
      @vonnart  Рік тому

      I had to go through the same transition and something that helped me was building a safety net first. So for two years before I quit, I really took conventions and my online shop more seriously so that I could build them up while I was preparing to be independent. That way when I left my full-time, I felt like I had a little bit a cushion to fall back on right away!

    This was a very helpful video, thank you! I would love to see more advice content like this for artists. I've learned a lot about my priorities recently, and I know I want art to be my main focus. I don't have a lot of income streams right now, but your video has helped me realize how important it is that I invest my time into figuring those out, so thank you! I quit a very demanding full time job in 2021 that took away basically all my free time to make art, but it definitely provided me enough $ to be financially stable, so now my goal is to reach close to that level of financial stability again but this time while still being able to make lots of art.
    For now, I started a part time job doing layout design - the hours vary greatly and I don't make much from it, BUT it does provide somewhat consistent cashflow & I have dental/vision insurance through it. Last year I submitted some prints to sell at a local gallery show and I am thinking I could try to do that more often too. I am also getting back into doing commissions, and I want to do better at promoting those. And I am starting to focus on my UA-cam channel because I've discovered really love editing videos, and it allows me to express myself more than just posting a photo to twitter or insta, so I really hope it will lead to another source of income eventually because I do love it. I have also been told that I would be good at making sticker designs, so that's something else I would like to look into - maybe start on etsy and then move to my own site if I gain a really good following. I have other goals too, like starting a comic/webtoon or getting an illustration agent to help me reach higher-paying clientele, but that's a little further down the line. Sorry for the long comment, you just really inspired me with this, and I feel like I really believe in my ability to do these things now, so thank you!! :) I really like how calm and encouraging this was, I look forward to more videos like this (and I absolutely love your work!!)

    I LOVE these kinds of informative shorter videos ❤Immediately as I was watching this I pulled my notebook out and started writing down the sources of income I have from my art 😅At the moment it's not much! My primary income is my commissions, followed by streaming on Twitch and getting donations through kofi! Streaming has been such a wonderful and lovely surprise, I would have never expected the support I've gotten over there. Besides that, I want to put more time and effort into making prints and promoting that!
    The last 2 that I'm considering for the future are a patreon and other online sales besides prints, such as stickers and other merch 🥰
    Thank you for sharing your stories and advice! ^^

Being able to trust others with your business is a great lesson to learn but it makes it so that I can draw more!

    Brilliant mate, thanks for making this video. That five-gig mindset resonated with me, in particular how the process of securing those five sources is unique to every individual. Its very much an artistic process in of itself. I dont think the artist spirit is cut out for the "farm life" of the 9-5, and is much more suited to the hunter-gatherer lifestyle of our forefathers. What's your take on physical galleries. While usually take a large percentage of your sales, if they provide marketing/promo, that might help offset that loss. But you need volume there. I see several artists who have their own physical galleries, but that requires a lot of $ and success first. It's difficult to navigate resources, such as fine art printing and logistics. So many moving parts!

    Hi again, I am a software engineer from the Netherlands and hobbyist artist. My sources of income currently are my full time job, tutoring, and stocks/crypto. I don't earn enough money to quit the first one though, even though I wish I could. The salary is good but I just don't think I am made for the high hours high expectations high everything corporate lifestyle, it is giving me endless anxiety and stress. I want to put everything I have into tutoring and art right now. I have always handled money intelligently from a young age, investing and saving it up to a point that I am currently at around 64k euro worth of investments and liquid assets. But I am considering just risking it all and reducing my expenses to the absolute minimum, digging into my savings, and doing more tutoring to sustain myself for the mid to long term while living with my parents. I don't think I will be able to earn any money off my art as is it is right now, maybe in a year or two of practice. But I can't imagine doing this for another few years while I work on it.
    The corporate life is not all its made out to be, kind of sad it took me close to six years to realize it.

    • @vonnart

      I think this is a great idea and maybe you could build a little bit of a safety net before you quit your job entirely. Before I left my full-time job, I spent two years building up my convention training and building an online shop. This way, by the time I was ready to leave, I felt that I already had a head start in being an independent artist rather than going in with nothing built before hand. I hope this helps and just know you can definitely do it!

    Aw I loved this!! Thank you so much for sharing this precious information! And I'm also thankful for the lift driver who shared it with you!
    I am definitely wanting to expand my sources of income. So far I'm mostly making my income through my day job - being a tattoo artist.. I've also got an etsy store that has now, over the holidays, made a few more sales than usual - the usual being 1 sale every 3-4 months :D I don't really have much on there and it's also pretty niche so yeah.. I've got a youtube channel, I've been wanting to do that for years now but am still quite shy with the camera, as well as I think that I have nothing useful to talk about :D
    It would be great if you made a video with ideas about what one can upload as an artist on youtube.. I'd love to do more videos! Even if I'm far far away from being monetized haha :D
    Greetings from Germany!!

    • @vonnart
      @vonnart  Рік тому +1

      I have done a few art galleries but I don't find them to be particularly for me. Most galleries take a huge chunk of the originals sales and because I have a big enough following on social media I can just sell the originals myself and keep all the profit. Galleries I believe nowadays are more for prestige but certainly can still be another route you could go. I have a few friends that still do this route and they would still recommend it!

      @spectreivart Рік тому

      @@vonnart thank you very much Tim :)
      yes, galleries tend to do that and I'm upset about it, its just get too expensive with them.
      the other espect of it, as I see it locally, is that it can make your art worth more and be sold in increasing cost over time because of the name of the artist and such. I try to say that its not only the prestige but gettiing into another area of people that search to buy expensive art.
      I also dont really like this area but wouldnt mind testing it to see how it goes :)
