This is an amazing video. I really liked your black & white video and though I didn't use the spreadsheet when I watched that video, I may go back and do it now. I was happy to see I rated the films pretty consistently, so my opinion didn't change much from one scene to the next on things like contrast and colour, that was validating. So my highest rated film at 81.07% is Ektar, followed by Fujifilm Pro 400H at 69.33%
The film I hated the most at 44.53% was ColorPlus 200, and second lowest with 45.60% was CineStill 50d. I laughed and laughed. People love that film but it's emo hipster trash, as far as I'm concerned :P
Thanks! My numbers were very similar to yours. And yeah, I don't get Cinestill 50d, at least developed in c41. Have you ever tried night photography with 800t though? I really love the look.
@@AndrewGoodCamera I have not tried that. I really don't like colour in general, which is why I took the test, I asked myself "I wonder if there's something I like more than Ektar"
Nope.
Now that I have a solid medium format I plan to revisit colour, see if I like it in that format...starting with Ektar I guess :)
I think CineStill might be perceived somewhat washed and bland because since it's based on a movie film stock, it's intended to be graded before being displayed, tho don't quote me on that.
Azriel Knight ok
Well this all depends on the scanner and scanner settings as well. CineStill 800T scanned on a Frontier or with the Frontier setting in NLP is my favorite color look ever. I also shoot it with an 85 filter in day light.
This is massive. Not only scientifically well-made, but also curated from the profesional perspective giving more insights for each of the different films. I can only begin to imagine the immense amount of work that this 21 minutes video has taken you. Worth watching and re-watching. Big thanks for this.
This video is absolute insanity. As a beginner photographer this is like learning all the secret tips and tricks all at once, feels like I stumbled and found a pot of gold
Probably the best whole THING I found on the internet, like, in the whole social media era. This is what the internet originally was built for, I think. Many people getting together, sharing knowledge and supplying materials to help each other and exchange. Philosophy rant over. Thank you!!! For this helpful tool, as I'm slowly approaching colour photography, I have yet to find out almost everything about it.
For budget landscapes/items photography I will choose Fuji C200.
For budget portrait photography I will choose Kodak Gold 200.
For cloudy and moody versatile photography (dominated by green colors) I will choose Fuji Pro 400H.
For cloudy and moody versatile photography (dominated by yellow colors) I will choose Portra 400.
For sunny and contrast versatile photography I will choose Kodak Ektar 100.
what camera and films for street black and white photogrpahy>
?
@@bickey9605 I am not an expert in films and just love to experiment. But I love my results with Kodak 5222.
Bickey Kunwar rangefinder 35mm lens hp5 push to 1600 500-1000 speed normal day set lens distance on 1.5-2m and you r in focus subjects freezes 1m to infinity frame and shoot away like a boss 😂😎💪🏻
I once asked my dad how would I know what film does what? he said something like unless someone has taken the same photo with the same camera and changed the film but kept everything the same, you'll have to learn it all yourself...
Then I saw this video. *science*
this video really does show how amazing our eyes are
Thanks for including a darker skinned model in some of your test shots. An Ultramax lab scan not rendering that skin tone correcctly was was made me go to Fuji C200
Thanks for putting in the incredible amount of effort and work into this video. I saw my favorites confirmed by the blind test and the consistent results are telling me that Ektar and Portra should remain my go-to films. It would be really cool to see a video on the differences of slide films. Keep up the good work!
Truly amazed by the quality of of your comparsion videos! I really feel enlightened! I can't even imagine how much hard work you've (once again) put into testing, but I can assure you that it is appreciated! Thank YOU!
I love that you take the time to do these film break downs. I still go back and reference the black and white film break down you did. Thanks so much!
I keep coming back to this video whenever I’m trying a new film stock. Such a great overview
I am just starting my film photography journey and am glad I found this. Thank you for using different scenarios in the comparison to see just how well the films function in different situations. When it was all said and done, I am apparently a Fuji guy. Who knew.
super informative, helpful, and very well made. thank you for taking the time to make this video.
Wow. You really went the extra mile with this video. The lengths you went to to capture identical scenes with the same hardware and different film stocks is truly remarkable. Smart way to do it to avoid shooting images at different times of day / lighting conditions. I especially liked seeing the landscape images included with the portraits. If you haven't made one already, a comparison of Fortia, Provia, Sensia, and Velvia would be great to see (assuming they're even commercially available still). I especially like Velvia 50 images shot outdoors in bright daylight.
Great follow up to your black and white comparison. Thanks for the great review and massive effort.
Oh yeah, I'd love to see an E6 comparison!!
I only shoot E6, so I would appreciate that. But then again, there are only really like 4 slide films on the market... and they are all good. For different purposes but excellent.
Please do an E6 shootout!! When did Ektachrome come back? I had no idea!
You have made my day 😃
+1
Yeah I was expecting it in this video since it’s a color film buying guide.
Ditto!
This is such a cool concept, and I love your execution! Thanks for putting so much time, thought and effort into this project for your viewers!
Thank you so much for taking the time to show the differences in quality and color between all of these films. I just bought my canon t70 to as my first analog camera with a set of Kodak gold 200. And i can't wait to see what comes out of my first film. Keep up the helpful videos!
Thanks for the time and effort on these comparison videos! really cool to see.
Hi Andrew. Thanks again for this great video. I've learned many things from you in the past year, from digital to film. You always go all out on these comparisons. Really admire the effort you put into it. Take care!
Thank you so much for this! After shooting b&w for a year now, I’m really interested in color negative film for certain situations now, so this comes in handy! The effort you’ve put into making this...wow!
Brand new to film, I needed this video. Thank you very much for having a great presentation and a wide variety!
Wow, thanks for the incredible dedication and all the hard work that has gone into making this. This is super useful!!
THIS IS INCREDIBLE. Thanks for all the work that went into this!
Thanks man, that was really really helpful. Amazing to see how many examples you've shot for each film! KUDOS!
This is such a top quality video, it's quite rare on youtube and I absolutely appreciate all the effort you put into it! I am a total newbie and I just bought my first analog camera, and having such a thorough comparison of films is extremely helpful for me. Thank you so much, now I know what to expect from all these film stocks and what should I buy!
Your effort in putting this entire experience together for us is so amazing. Hats off to you and thank you. I recently came into three mint-condition film cameras - a Canon AE-1, Minolta X-700, and Pentax K1000. I'm so excited to finally start shooting film after 5-6 years shooting digitally as a profession and always wanting to give film a shot. I've studied it a lot and it wasn't until you put everything into perspective with these side-by-sides and also providing the spreadsheet to help me keep track of my points of value that I feel I was truly ready to pull the trigger on ordering some rolls. It's funny because I've always absolutely loved the Fuji look, and it doesn't surprise me that, even blind, their C200 and Superia Xtra 400 stocks came out on top, with 81.33% and 90.33% scores, respectively. I know what I'll be ordering this week. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Great video dude! Just getting into film and this was exactly what I needed. I love the interactivity of the spreadsheet, thought that was awesome. I appreciate all of the effort that you put into this! I blindly chose Kodak Ektar 100 and just ordered a bunch. Looking forward to shooting it this weekend.
I am blown away by the work you put into this. Thank you for putting your heart and soul into this. Slide films would be great for a future video!
Thans Joshua!
This is perfect. Highly educational and thorough, and supported by a meritorious collection of artistic shots. I love this endlessly am going to be using this as my go-to reference. Thank you so much!
This was amazing!! This video was exactly what I was looking for! I just recently bought a canon sureshot 85 zoom and I had no idea what kind of film to get but my top favorite was the Kodak Ektar 100! So grateful to have found this video/channel!
thank you, this video helped me so so so much. i've been shooting film less than a year but been getting jobs and feeling like I really need to learn as much as I can as quickly as I can. this felt like going back to school! thank you kind sir
Getting into film and I’ve comen back to this video so many friggin times, thanks for doing such a great job.
Wow, thank you for taking the time to make this video. I personally love UltraMax at 200 but processed at 400 and Ektar at 50, processed for box speed. This is the first video I’ve watched of yours and you’ve got yourself another subscriber! Keep it up!!
Wow! This was outstanding. Thank you so much for this video. It's so helpful coming back to film 20 years later. Amazing work!
For those having a lab scan their images, it’s very important to consider which machine is being used as they also add their own color science. Frontier tends to add a more golden cast (offsetting Fujifilm’s pinkish hue), while Noritsu has a more red base (offsetting Kodak’s golden hue). I generally stick with a Fuji Frontier scanner with Fuji emulsions and the Noritsu with Kodak films. Mixing these will often result in way too much pink or gold tones - unless you can communicate in advance with the scanner technician the output your looking for. Excellent video as always!!
Thank you for putting this together! I just had time to sit down and go through it properly with the scoring sheet, and I found it to be a wonderful resource for finding what film I want to shoot next. Last summer I did a bike trip with my partner where I shot fujifilm superia 400, and while I loved the results, something didn't look quite right. As you pointed out, it was the green shadows that I was noticing (even 1 stop overexposed). Looks like next up is Gold 200, and maybe some Ektar (😍) if I can justify the price.
Thank you from Victoria, B.C., Canada 😄 (and P.S... yes please to the E6 video)
This must have been so much work! It is vastly appreciated by all of us who still enjoy shooting film, so cheers for that
This is the most clever comparison I've come across! Engaging and educational. Niccccceeee!
There are not enough words to express a fair big THANK YOU for the amount of work done with this video, and your honesty and generous personal opinion. It is truly amazing the test you were able to perform here (thanks also to the sponsor who made that posible, since film stocks, dev& scanning is so expensive nowadays) and all the accompanying information. A jewel to recommend to anyone into 35mm film photography.
Absolutely great benchmark! I really appreciate the effort you've gone through... Wish more people did serious reviews like this!
This has been a top notch review and comparison of the film's. The blind test actually confirmed what I've observed as a professional photographer as to my preferences. Thank you for your work on this it was very helpful.
greatgreatgreat! Putting this together must have been a lot of work. Will watch this later in full length in the darkroom while the machine is heating up :) Thank you for the video. And I'd love to have your sweater (with another stock).
This is probably the best video on UA-cam. Thank you so much for the work, it was super helpful!!
I've only watched the first 4 minutes and had to pause to thank you for this wonderfully done blind test. You're poured a lot of effort into it and we're all grateful!
Thank you!
Thank you! My favorite of the 3 samples were Fuji C200 and Kodak Ektar 100; I just love Fuji color.
Thank you for this video. I found an old 35mm camera recently and although I know nothing about film photography I’m super inspired to start shooting on it. I’ve been thinking about what roll of film I should try out first and this video has definitely helped me in the decision making process!
This is such a great video, thanks so much for putting all this work in!
Wow,b&w and now color film comparison.Thankyou so much i think most of us appreciate what you do.Thankyou for the effort and time you put in this project.I will now sub to your channel.
Wow amazing work! really helpful. I am using this research in my decision making for the X Recipes in my Fuji X xpro2, not the same I know but fun!
Thank you for the time and effort!
Only just saw this! Great resource man, I commend your effort in taking all those test shots and putting this together. Haha my favourite color neg has also always been Ektar 😁
Overall this and your b&w film guide mainly made me want to go out and try lots of different films and shoot more. Thanks a lot! I will probably come back to these huge knowledge bulks called your videos when I tried a couple of them or am looking for a specific film for a project.
Outstanding review! Bring on the slide film contest. This is a most comprehensive c-41 35mm assessment. Great stuff.
Long live film.
Wow, what a video!! I'm just getting into film and was super intimidating by picking my first few rolls. Thank you for all the help!! Still super useful 4 years later.
Great work! I have been looking for something like this since I am returning to photography after many years away. I picked the Ektar each time for the three blind scenes I downloaded. Definitely would like to see a slide comparison, and now off to watch your black and white comparison video. Many thanks (and new subscriber!)
oooh this video was so satisfying to watch!!! this was very very objective method for comparison. And i like how you managed to get as many factors constant as possible! On youtube this is very rarely the case, where such comparisons are kept so objective. Its usually someone comparing one film with a certain camera at some point of the day - with another film on another camera at a different point of the day.
This isnt OCD, this is how any comparison SHOULD be done. with keeping as many factors same as possible. And yes it can be expensive sometimes, but otherwise it makes little sense to do the comparison in the first place.
Excellent work, even enjoyable for an old hand. Thank you for taking the time to make and share this.
Good stuff, I learned a ton! Thank you for taking the time to break this down.
My goodness, man! This is one of the best and most useful videos! Amazing work, thank you so much!!
This video is EXACTLY what I have been looking for! Thank you!
I really appreciate your effort making this video. Thank you so much! Super informative for me. Keep it up!
Thanks for putting in the work on this video Andrew . Really appreciate it and really informative keep up the great work 👍
That was a lot of work, putting this together. Thank you, very helpful.
This was probably one of the best videos I’ve watched. Thanks so much!!
Thanks for the video. I want to try out Ektar now.
Fantastic job!
This video is awesome - thanks for all the work you put into this! Valuable resource.
Great video! Very well put together. Kodak Ektar and Ultramax are my go-to film stocks of choice, although recently I've really been enjoying pushing Potra 400.
Super helpful video, would definitely be interested in your take on the slide films mentioned!
Incredible work you have done there! Thank you very much for all this effort :)
Awesome job guys! Could only imagine carrying around all those cameras and setting this all up. Ended up liking Ektar and Superia 400, not a huge surprise 😉 also kudos for getting people of different skin tones for reference 🙏🏽
Thanks Dan!
Epic comparison! Thank you so much for taking the time to do this!
The best video I have seen regarding this topic! Thank you!
thank you so much. my results:
93.06% D - Kodak Ektar 100
84.17% A - Fujifilm C200
83.33% C - Fujifilm Pro 400h
72.50% B - Fujifilm Superia Xtra 400
71.94% G - Kodak Portra 160
69.44% E - Kodak GC/UltraMax 400
64.44% F - Kodak Gold 200
56.67% I - Kodak ColorPlus 200
52.78% H - Cinestill 50d
... and indeed this covers my actual preferences.
Kodak Portra 400 would have been great in addition for comparing
Thank you so much for doing these. Fantastic
the most helpfull video I've seen about film photography ever, thank you
As I am just starting with shooting film more seriously, I didn't know your type of film could make such a difference to your photo's!
I liked the composition of most of your images, you've got a good eye. Good video thank you.
Whoa! What a comparison! I can really appreciate the amount of work you put into this.
That's just amazing content! Thanks for putting in the work. Learned a lot for my next purchase :)
Can we appreciate the video quality? I don't think I have seen a more smooth-looking and satisfying video on youtube!
really appreciate the effort put into this. thank you. subscribed
Great video! Thankyou for your time in doing this!
An excellent video for future reference. Thank you for putting so much time and effort into this.
Wow, I've been looking for this kind of video for a long long time, this is exactly what I needed. Thank you for the work, this gonna help me so much! Brb gonna watch all your videos now
I appreciate this so much. Thank you for the immense amount of work you've put into this!
I truly hope this video gains the audience and views it deserves given the extreme effort it took to make.
This is one of those videos that performs well over the long haul. :)
Thanks for making this test as precise and fair as possible!!!
Really appreciate the effort and the work that you put in this video. Hope that this video help those who in need of information about which film to use for their personal liking including me. Much appreciate for the effort. I would love to see you review for manual camera and how it works in the future.
Just got a film camera a week ago been learning as much as I can on UA-cam and this helped so much with Film. I kept going towards C and G. FUJIFILM PRO400 and KODAK PORTRA160.
I loved how you kept it blind, it helped me be non biased on names and helped me pick one out. Surprisingly, Kodak was the one I liked most, based on the images i liked 3 different kodaks and 1 Fuji, everything else was neutral and not like was Cinestill. I will probably be getting the Kodak Ektar 100 as my first film. Thank you for putting this up
Thank you again for this video. During COVID-19 I explored film again and this was a great refresher for buying some rolls to experiment with. The usage perspective for the street photography was useful.
thanks for the amazing comparison... and yessss, i absolutely want to see an e6 comparison!
keep up the good work =)
Amazing video, amazing execution, immense value! Thanks so much!
Great video! Love the detail and science based approach.
ektar reeeeeally surprised me! even though, going through my mdeium format scans i realized my favourite roll ever was also shot on ektar...completely forgot about it! amazing.
This is a huge amount of work thank you
Where did you get your hoodie?? Its so cool! I'm looking forward to the slide film comparison 😀❤
Bro.. your dope jumper and tremendous leg work done here gone saved me like a bunch of money trying to find the color look I want. Ektar 100 is the bees knees and beans!
EXCELLENT video. This is an amazing resource for anyone who shoots film, beginner or pro.
Thank you and thanks to Indie Film Lab.
One of -if not- the best comparison video ever. Thank you.
Thanks for making and going through the film stocks. I'm picking up ektar 100 as my favorite!
