Wow! George's top film selections are the same films I used to photographed with. And that was nearly 20 years ago. Thank you George and to the rest of you youngsters who are keeping the art of film photography alive. Never let it die!
I understand your point very well ... but if you are a real "cheapskate", you should try the Kodak Vision 3 250D in ECN-2 process (at home). Buy in large quantities and start bulkloading. You save big money - even compared to Kodak Colorplus 200. Then you have more than one option...
@@girmonsproductions I personally think that Rodinal (sometimes branded as Adonal or R09) is the best developer for Acros 100. I develop semi stand for 60min with 1:100 dilution (semi stand = 3 initial inversions, let sit for 30 min, invert 3 times, let sit for last 30min) The reason is that rodinal does not contain solvents that cause a smoother grain, but make you lose sharpness. It is a high acutance developer so it normally would increase grain size, but doesn't impact slow films that much (Acros 100, Delta 100, Pan F 50). Don't use Rodinal for films faster than 100 ISO. I have never tried the ID-11 with Acros, but I do know that ID-11 behaves in a similar way to Kodak D-76. It's a good all around developer, but i feel that it does not produce the finest grain on these fine grain films. Rodinal only comes as a liquid so if you are in a part of the world that has difficulty with liquid chemical shipping then I think XTOL (which is available as a powder) would be a better choice than ID-11. Hope that helps.
@@TheScienceofPhotography oh I see, I used to use R09 stand dev for 400 speed films and I did not like that at all. so I switched back to 1:50 / 25 but now recently been using ID11 ( 1:1) and I sort of liked it, but I got 5L of ID11 so Im gonna try to use just the stock because I like the results from that. Pro 160 NS is not discontinued, it's just only sold in Japan and Oceania. This summer I shot my first rolls of it and I found out it is favourite colour negative film. In Australia it cost around €33 for a 5-pack 120 which is pretty affordable. Shipping is pretty expensive, fortunately I know some people that go there on holiday and will take me some.
The new formula of Lomochrome Purple is actually fantastic. I have a video comparing it with real Aerochrome if you want to check it out. Kodak Gold is actually my favourite colour neg and over exposed Portra 800 is my favourite Portra film! Velvia 100 (not 50) is also underrated. Fuji 160ns is still available in Japan and Australia! Acros is goodtier! Rollei Retro 400s is great too! Most B&W film is panchromatic. Orthochromatic film is the other type and can be developed with a red light on without ruining the film.
Recently started shooting film and my jaw almost hit the floor when you said Colour plus was £2.75 a roll 3 years ago. It's about £14 a roll around here. I pretty much just shoot portra and hardly experiment with others as they all seem similarly extortionate.
So glad you put lomography 800 in god tier. That’s my go-to. For film you’ve missed, I shot a roll of ‘film never die IRO400’ the other day and was pretty happy with the results
Pretty much agree on everything except I think you’re having a mad one on Velvia, I’m guessing it’s just not your style. People like Charlie Waite and David Ward have made incredible work on Velvia
What about kodak vision 3 and Fiji eterna both in 50 and 250 daylight but properly ECN2 processed at home or specialist lab or home C41 with a remjet removal product?
Personally I think shooting portraits with ektar 100 can be really cool, when you have a hard and saturated light situation for example at sundown. The pictures I took were absolutely gorgeous and the colors were super vibrant. Of course it's up to the photographer's style and preference but I would totally use ektar 100 again for portraits.
Not widely available in the USA, only imports. So if it doesn't exist in the States then It's not considered. Proimage 100 is available only for third world countries, (like my country Mexico :P) cuz does not need low temp
Aye, poor lomo purple - seemed like such a fun idea at the time. Maybe a sun drenched summer on a fabulous coast would've created more pleasing results (all round lol), but a cool damp season in the UK really didn't do it any favours. Can safely say won't be using it again, maybe gift the remaining rolls to someone I hate lol. Saying all that much more excited by the metropolis (?) stock there bringing out next - pledged for 10 rolls of that...
Brilliant insight into films, can't comment on a lot of the films you have rated but can say I 100% agree with the Velvia Provia decision. Thanks for posting.
Blown away by this quality content. I'm here for it. I completely agree with you in regard to Portra, though I use Portra160 since I live in the desert.
I've got to thank you again for this one, George. I don't shoot film that often, and when I'm about to order some, I find myself coming back to this video as a reference. The only thing I might disagree with you about is 400TX. Our labs are very consistent, and back when I used to process that film myself I found I could get very consistent results. I had no such issues as you mentioned. If I wanted really strong grain and that striking contrast, it was Tri-X every time. But... Now my top two are the same as your top two. Basically, because since I don't shoot that often, and 36 exposures per roll means that quite different situations might arise from the start to the end of one roll in my camera, just how awesome those two films do at shooting nearly anything makes them my go-to choices.
Totally with you on the Lomo 800. It's amazeballs. I would put CineStill 800T in "amazing". It's probably my favourite daylight film with a warming filter. Super wide latitude and gorgeous colours. Crazy expensive, though. I also love the Fuji Industrial 400, but that's hard to get a hold of in Europe. Also already loving the mullet.
Fujifilm Acros 100II both 135 and 120 is selling here in Japan, have not tried it yet as I still have a load of the original I bought just before it went away. I always push Acros to 400, that is the look I enjoy the most. I only hope the new version looks the same
I wanted to post this yesterday before you made it private : You said color plus but you were showing images hashtag Kodak gold and when you were talking about Kodak gold, you showed color plus.
I have a question, i got a pack of lomo 400 and a pack of lomo 800, when i orderd the film it said on the site that they didnt have dx codes, so i just figured i would shoot them in my rangefinder/slr, but the canisters seem to have the dx cod on there just like normal films and i really wanna put som of it throu my olympus point and shoot that demands dx codes (otherwise it exposes it for 100 iso), am i right in the fact that they have dx codes and are good too put trough my point and shoot??
I watched everything till the end. I don't shoot film yet but i am gonna save this thing for later. VEry informative. Thanks for putting this together.
Made it to the end ! Wow ! Thanks for this and I know much is personal preference for sure . Like the TriX vs HP . Myself I’ve been shooting hp , I like how it handles shadows better. Also been shooting Portra 400 . Did shoot portra 800 a while back but haven’t developed it yet .
I miss Delta 100, Rollei Retro 80s and 400 in your list (all of them great films). Mostly agree with all of your thoughts, but I think Acros should be considered higher due to the lack of reciprocity failure and contrast rendition. Fun video :)
Kodak P3200??? (It’s a no for me btw) LOVED this video. I watched the whole thing from beginning to end. Loved how your list absolutely reflected your shooting style as all the films that you put in God and Amazing were color films, aside from HP5. I’d be curious to see other photographer on UA-cam do a list like this one. Great video!!!!
Not sure I'd put Velvia in "no" but it definitely has some drawbacks, one being its pretty expensive, and two, its hard as heck to shoot. Way less forgiving than Portra or pretty much any color negative film and if you underexpose it has a sort of blueish overcast look to it. But tbh totally agree with the rest of these thoughts!
Great, fun video. Largely agree, and am pleased you were brave with your HP5 / TriX decision. My key changes would be Pan F 50 up to Amazing or God. Niche for top quality b&w studio portraits. Also you need to try Agfa APX 100, a poor mans Acros IMHO.
I agree with most of your sentiments. Surprised not to see Agfa Vista being mentioned, though. Despite being recently discontinued, it was my favourite 'cheap' colour film. I think Acros could be rated higher--as it is such a stunning film. Especially for long-exposure photography, at night. And I also felt XP2 should get more love, precisely because of the points you raised. For many years, it was the only B&W film stock I shot, because of the C-41 processing. For that reason alone, it's a great option for people looking for B&W. Also, honourable mentions for me: Lomography B&W films (cheap, pretty decent dynamic range, nice grain) Lomo X-Pro Colour (mimics cross-processed slide film, in a C41 chemistry. Used on sunny summer days, gets dreamy results)
Fomapan 400 at OK is absolutely mental IMO, although I do see your points. I love that film, it's a very classic look, decently contrasty and I love the grain, it's visible, giving a retro look, but not distracting. It sits somewhere in between the soft and mellow HP5 and the harsh and contrasty Tri-X. It kinda has a reputation of love it or hate it, so I encourage everyone to at least try it. It's cheap anyways .
I've seen so many comparisons of these two. Tmax seems to be slightly less grainy (both very grainy), higher contrast but also more shadow detail. The delta shots usually have muddy shadows. I'm currently shooting Tmax p3200 for the first time. Excited to see how it turns out :)
Love this vid and the fresh ‘do. Funnily enough I have half a roll of Ektar in my K1000 that is killing me rn as I’ve avoided shooting with it until I’m next in a field or something. I largely agree with you although recently Fuji Superia 400 in my Yashica t5 has been one of my favorite combos (for the exact ‘disposable’ feel you mention) and would have ranked higher for me. Keep it up George!
I shoot the CR200, and saw several of my shots slide past. I buy up every bit of this film I can get. It is not consistent from one batch to another. The stuff they made in 2015 does not look at all like the stuff they sold in 2019. You have to be willing to experiment. What I have found is that it favors lots of exposure. If you expose it at 200 you’re not going to like it. You have to light a fire under it. If you get one of the funky batches you have to be willing to do some color temperature adjustment at scan time. All that said, it is one of the most interesting films I’ve ever shot. Not at all like Kodachrome. I develop at home and “scan” with an A7Riv and Sony 90 macro lens.
Not only is this 30+ minutes of rambling - There's an additional video going up TOMORROW

Acros 100 is above God tier due to its reciprocity characteristics for long exposure photography. Also, when developed in Rodinal it shows no grain.
Agreed. Acros was definitely God tier. I'm really hoping the new Acros will be as good as the old.
The Science of Photography would rodinal be better for acros than ID11 stock? Have you tried it?

I've seen so many comparisons of these two. Tmax seems to be slightly less grainy (both very grainy), higher contrast but also more shadow detail. The delta shots usually have muddy shadows. I'm currently shooting Tmax p3200 for the first time. Excited to see how it turns out :)
@@AbduStudio That's mostly been my experience too. Much prefer pushing HP5 to 3200
This is so amazing because it's so useful. Thank you!
The boy came thru fresh af for the video
@negativefeedback you put the kodak gold examples in the color plus 200 area, and the kodak color plus examples in the kodak gold area
Nice video. Portra 400 and HP5 - gods for sure.
TriX god tier fight me. Also no natura 1600 :(
"it's very contrasty" yes. as it should be. contrast that smacks you in the face or gtfo
