No private business in the world runs a deficit of nearly $1b a year while top executives make $400-700k a year. Government workers need accountability to taxpayers. We need the department of government efficiency here in Canada
@@douglaszimmerman1768 the problem is because nobody's salary comes from taxpayers money, your point about accountability is a moot. However as directors of a crown Corporation, they can't keep accumulating deficits upon deficits and rewarding themselves with bonuses. A lot of their spending is actually on what they call strategic investments, for example building a half billion dollar plant to modernize their logistics and stay competitive in the parcel market, purchasing fuel efficient and electric vehicles for their delivery fleet, and purchasing carbon credits so they can claim that their parcel deliveries are carbon neutral. So why are employees so upset that they are ready to strike? There's a lot happening that is very complicated to explain. Most employees make between 23 to 33$ per hour. The job has changed. Yes lettermail has decreased, but that's no excuse because strategically, management is missing the target which is to expand Canada Post services as is being done in other countries, modernize the post office, and take their rightful share of the parcel market. Just so you know, we did not strike during the pandemic in order to serve Canadians during a very difficult time. Canada Post served Canadians during the entire pandemic with the hopes of being rewarded further in time. The time has come.
Well I am a small business that relied on the post office to ship orders, them doing this at the busiest time of year is a cheap shot to all small businesses and they should be ashamed picking now just because they think it will make them accept their demands. This is actually hurting my business hard.
as a small business reliant on Canada post for shipments you must also agree that the cost to ship packages across Canada is prohibitively high (compared to national package delivery costs in other countries). they would help their situation if they lowered their parcel costs so small businesses would be able to compete against giants like amazon prime, without having to rely on third party shipment providers for a lower, more competitive price.
@@ryan7288 I shipped a parcel to Japan, and it was cheaper than shipping to Calgary which is just 3 hours away from me. It's ridiculous how expensive shipping and mailing is in Canada.
I sell on several different sites. Spent the day and learned to use Chit Chats to ship my open orders. They have good rates and it took less time than I expected to figure it out. No drop off location near me so I did have to schedule a pickup from my home to get my box of parcels but that was only $25 extra and the cheap rates more than made up for it. It feels good to not be at the mercy of Canada Post anymore, though there are already a bunch of my customers' orders being held by them from last week that I may end up having to refund.
Well it seems like every year they do this stuff around xmas time. So the public is used as leverage but it sometimes effects us too. Why not strike at tax time or in the summer?
Don't these postal "Workers" realize that every time they go on strike more people are switching to paperless billing an the use of other more reliable couriers? They are just shooting themselves in their own foot.
Canada post doesn't turn a profit so switching to another courier should not hurt them that much The government should be mostly paying to ship our letters, it should be a subsidized service Workers need more money and management needs less Later today I'm going to walk by my Canada post, I don't know if it's the type of strike where there is a pick it line, but if there is people striking outside I will bring them some timbits

I hear ya, before striking just stop collecting stuff, they collected right up until the strike day and the post office still has workers in there probably searching up senders to see what might be in there
Absolutely ridiculous they wait til Christmas packages need to arrive early and that in itself is unnecessary!! These workers are already on a higher pay level with a pension plan and a very good benefit plan!! Greed!!!
Actually they don't, top rate for mail handler or carrier or dispatcher after 7 years is $29 - $30 per hour, A Director makes $131000 per year, CEO makes $500000 per year, Unlike the CBC the Canada Post Corporation is a stand alone company that doesn't rely on tax dollars from the Federal Government.

How else are workers suppose to negotiate for fair wages and benefits when companies won't play ball. Why is the default from citizens to blame the "workers" not the corporations? If they negotiated in faith this wouldn't be an issue every 2 years. But every 2 years the "company" does the same thing and stalls until the last min. Forcing the workers to strike. The workers strike when it's inconvenient for the public to put pressure on the corp. to negotiate and every time the government steps in and says NONONO you can't do this cuz mail is essential. Well it is essential and if it was so easy anyone would do it. and all the private companies would deliver to those rural homes no one else will. But it's not easy the workers deserve fair wage and compensation for it. Canada post needs to Pay Up!
They have been on two previous strikes in the last 25 years and they were both not even full strikes, but rotating. You have many people willing to do their job at other companies for way less. Amazon, UPS, DHL, and small delivery businesses can do their job at way less cost and efficiency.

Let Canada Post go the way of the Dodo bird.. what a useless government entity. Private sector delivery crushes Canada post. All Canada post does is complain, while actual companies deliver. Will be glad to see it go... but government can't cut fat unfortunately.
Good job, Union. You forced me to finally spend the day learning to use Chit Chats to bypass Canada Post for my small business. I'm just a little guy but I spend 10k a year on postage and I'll be strongly encouraging other Canadian sellers to use alternative shipping now that I've seen it isn't that complicated to be free from Canada Post's constant rate hikes and union strikes.
Has anyone in the private sector received an 11.5% wage increase over the past three years? Would an 11.5% raise in the private sector be considered unacceptable? This is a low-skilled, low-education job, yet every three years, workers go on strike demanding more than what many skilled workers in the private sector earn. Is Canada post being managed properly? No. Should management be replaced? Probably. Are the employees part of the problem? Absolutely. It's time to address the institution as a whole, from top to bottom. Canada post is losing money from the top down because of management, workers, costs, customer service, reliability, effectiveness. This entire organization from the top down is made up of entitled workers, who offer no customer service and a constant headache to Average Canadians.
Get out of here. What's going on isn't even fit nor reasonable. They already make more than many people. Its only another excuse to try get another raise like they do every year.
I am a Postal Worker and would like to address some comments. #1 We are sorry your mail has been interrupted. #2 Our job has become unsafe with the levels of physical work expected each day. The average person cannot walk 25-30 km on a daily basis in a safe manner. This is why people get such bad service. People physically cannot do the job as expected. So they cut corners. #4 Most of our revenue gets eaten away by people on short-term disability from physical/mental injuries or stress leave. Yet our routes are about to get bigger yet again, which will cause more injuries and more people on stress leave. #5 Our work environment with management is very toxic. It's like being in a toxic relationship that you can't leave. Blamed for injuries. Blamed if you physically cant complete your job. #6 We just bought an innumerable amount of $135k vehicles that we don't need. Also a new plant. So when it comes to spending Canada Post always has money for the most extravagant expenditures. We also have 14 vice presidents and 8 'executive leaders' who apparently all get bonuses. Management on a local level is also bloated. We also purchase carbon offsets so we can state we are carbon neutral #7. Our start pay has decreased $5. Money we get paid for flyers decreased about 35%. With work load becoming bigger. If you want no flyers just stick a sticker/note on your box and you won't receive them.
unsustainable on both ends for physical work, so what happens? Rural closures or subsidization from government. If neither of those happen, that fat you are talking about in the middle management positions gets trimmed until it is sustainable. In my opinion this union demand will accelerate that. Perhaps rural mail gets delivered 2-3 times per week instead of 5. big cost cuts coming outside of urban centers. While there's a little bit of merit in management bonuses, taking also from your annual report, seems like 2% of all employees are "Corporate". I'm not sure if these are all a different union, but they would be around 3,000 employees (2% of under 70,000 total employees). Somehow, I doubt that any bonus that they get would have substantial amount of impact to the 55,000 employees your union represents. 5% bonus for $12mil maybe, if avg employee makes a bit over $80k? Do $12m divided by 55,000 and enjoy a night out to dinner with the extra wages. However, I do understand the optics look bad. I do feel like this point is over-exaggerated to pit you against each other. Not sure on your comment on innumberable amount of vehicles. if you're talking about electric vehicles, your annual report says approx. 130 total vehicles as a result of Government demand to green. I don't know when these were purchased. Perhaps a poorly timed investment on the new plant, I don't know if you are struggling to get parcels through your system, but if so, that would eventually pay for itself theoretically. If not struggling to process, then bad timing; perhaps useful in future when everyone turns to online shopping. If not, another mis-managed half billion dollars that only partially gets paid back in extra revenue. Regardless, the issue is bigger than what happens within your corporation. Rural routing is not profitable. Competitors in urban zones are taking away all that makes rural sustainable. Draw your own conclusions as to what that means. Look at Norway, national service not profitable so shut down. Gov can't get companies to pick up the slack, so rural suffers. 55,000 multiplied by any number is going to be big. My sincerest good luck to you
Canada Post is dying because it is no loner competitive. Canada Post keeps talking about diversify itself to offer other services. Postal rates keeps going up. Sending parcels within Canada are ridiculously high when compared sending the same sized and weight parcels to the USA. As a rural resident who has dealt with the same rural post office for 35 years, I can't tell you how great the workers are there. They don't want to be on strike. It's ridiculous that Canada Post has allowed this negotiation to go a whole year and they take a pay hike while not wanting to give a pay raise to workers. Canada Post....maybe it is time to put it out of itself to bed because it obviously isn't looking out for Canadians who depend on its service.
What's your suggestion? I think the government should put more money I to the post office, so workers can get a raise, but Trudeau isn't union friendly, neither is Pierre Poilevre, and Jagmeet Singh says he is but I kinda have my doubts
They had the market and management blew it yet all the bogus execustives vps and upper management still have their jobs and constant bonuses. whats wrong with this picture? Someone is lying?
Canada Post is a Crown corporation that is funded by revenue from the sale of its products and services, not taxpayer dollars. Canada Post is able to operate despite losses because it is ultimately backed by taxpayers and can borrow money at lower costs than its competitors. Canada Post is responsible for serving Canadians and operating in a financially self-sustaining manner. The corporation is accountable to Canadians and Parliament by reporting its financial results. Canada Post has faced financial challenges in recent years, including: 2022: Reported a loss before tax of $548 million 2024: Reported a loss from operations of $490 million in the first six months, compared to $371 million in the same period of 2023
Business can’t pay other carrier because it’s comparatively lot more expensive, remote parts of our people can’t find any other carrier, that’ll do the business because it’s not profitable and many many more other reasons…… yet for small convenience, we choose to give more business to other carrier in urban settings then canadapost…
I wonder if this will cause or force canada post to purchase or look into the costs to automate their services, removing the people entirely. With robotics and the programs available now and the work ethic of many of their workers, they are making it really easy to be replaced. A good idea for the employees, buckle down and pay attention to your spending, its tough for everyone, worse off for those that don't have wages like yours, yet they are getting by. Instead of people asking for more money to spend, maybe they should be cutting back on spending?
Take a job with Canada Post then. They're almost always hiring. You want to know why? Because over 50% of new employees quit once they realize they have to work YEARS as an on-call worker with no benefits and sporadic pay/hours until they get a full-time position. Those who actually make it to the full-time jobs (which still less pay than most other major couriers) have paid their dues in full. And if you don't think it doesn't require skill - I've seen multiple new employees walk off the job because they weren't able to handle it.
The most telling thing: management gets a bonus, but workers get laid off.
Same thing happened in Brampton
I’m not sure how the bonus works in the structure of their pay.

Demanding more money when the corporation lost $750 million dollars last year makes a ton of sense.

2) the managers all got raises and they tell the workers to go screw themselves

It's not designed to be profitable, that's the advantage of public ownership. you can run something not for profit, instead of being primarily beholden to shareholders like the private sector they are beholden to the general public.
Yes, only your work has all these issues.. Other works do not have any issues.
unsustainable on both ends for physical work, so what happens?

Canada Post has faced financial challenges in recent years, including:
2022: Reported a loss before tax of $548 million

2024: Reported a loss from operations of $490 million in the first six months, compared to $371 million in the same period of 2023
