Great video. What a dramatic difference between the peaceful serenity of your rubber powered planes and the annoying buzz of the gas/electric motors. My choice is the graceful and quiet airplanes. Thanks for another superior video.
Really enjoyed that last , just about to get a Keil Kraft Ajax flying again. need to work on trim , it used to climb very steeply, your Senator had a gentle perfect trim.
An Albert Hatfull design and a really good performer.Made one years ago and hanker for building another. He also designed a similar model called The Mercury which I think is slightly bigger.
Beautiful , I fly a 200% electric Senator with rudder and throttle micro radio . Still traditionally built and tissue covered . 20 minutes on a very small battery if there's a gentle breeze to ride .
Suuper envious of how your test/glide and trim process.,if only my planes behaves that way during this phase then i'd be over the moon.. what usually happens is the damage just keeps piling up as i go about trimming
CY Alcantara start with a known good CG and glide over tall grass (which we didn't do because we're nuts). Don't add power until the glide is straight ahead and stable.
Test glide over long grass☺️KK instructions.i hope you’ve got a wing dt and tracker in that. They have been known to fly away one flight in three. Much more fun than the RC flying wings you had to compete with. Beautifully built and trimmed.
If I could learn how to trim these out and find a big enough area to fly in, I'd like to give this a try. I've built free-flight before but they didn't last - probably because they weren't built and trimmed well.
It's definitely a demanding discipline, well worth the effort. You need good quality designs though. The old Keil Kraft kits are very good, same with the Comet Sparky and Pepper. I've got a kit for the KK Mercury which is also a superb flier (better than the Senator in my opinion).
It's a true classic. Its predecessor, the Mercury, has conventional landing gear. Worth your while to check that one out, as I feel that it flies even better. :)
O my g-d Does that bring back memories I think I made a total of 3 of them my favorite And they all flew well Just love the Senator A great design from our British friends Herb
Joshua By the way did your Senator have a DT on it I lost my first Senator in Palm Bay it hit a thermal and just got sucked up into the clouds and never saw it again Joe Clasen from the FMA gave me a talking to I was pretty green back then l never even knew there was a thing called a DT and he said always use a DT if you do not want to lose you planes The best to you and your family Herb
Believe it or not, that may not be true. And by that I mean I'm working on kitting the forgotten Albert Hatful design and it looks like it could actually be better. It's definitely beautiful and easy to build. :)
@@johnroberts3723 I'm not referring to the Senator. There was a different design that preceded it. Simpler, prettier, and poorly marketed so almost no one knows about it.
Beautiful flight! Quite a contrast between the serene rubber powered Senator and those fast flying models on noisy two cycle engines. The reason I went to rubber power several years ago.
just built one of those from a holman short kit. if you haven't found out their tail heavy and need front end ballast...……. 12 in balsa prop 8 braided strands 1/8 …..mine weighs 5.8 oz loaded. RTF>>>>>>>>>>>their wonderful flyers just seen that flight that hit the stinkin pole LOL "been their done that" thiers always atleast one object in a field that wants to be an "airplane magnet
I reckon it was really for a small diesel with that short nose. I’ve built several. If you aren’t competing with it then lengthening the nose helps the c of g. Wing dt because of tail under the fus. If you use a tail dt with l.e. Going down you get a hilarious dt pattern and a lot of stress on the t.e. hinge.
Great job! Question - when Josh says he's going to bend in left rudder, does he literally mean he bends the vertical fin? If not, how does one add left rudder on this type of plane. Thanks!
love watching your build, great job (Hope) I built mine a while back before the kit became available again, down loaded the plans and scratch built it, modified it a little after loosing one of my favorites to a tree. I kept it rubber powered but added a single channel R/C to the rudder. just enough control to keep from loosing it lol
no doubt the senator is a wonderful flying model, loved mine so much I made a P30 version .............anyway I noticed at the end of the flight it wanted to go straight, am thinking since the power was at the end and in the glide mode thier was no thrust to turn the model, even with right rudder trim....so will leave it at that>>>>>>> next problem, how in the world is it you can power up going right but have a left glide turn, how is that done??
We need to move the CG back. Hope upped the power to 16 strands and it got really loopy under power. Still was getting 300-400' climbs out of it though!
That got rather busy very quickly at the end there. Hope you found it again in the long grass. Your lad would disappear if you sent him in to collect it. 😁👍
I love this series of The Senator project, and your polite children, not making revolution during film sessions. :) But how about rubber braiding at such tension as the nose block stays in place. Can the propeller really freewheel in such a case, or is'nt that even a winning necessity? The curious old swedish man just wonders. I happen to have some such projects in mind. And, happy man: Do whatever it needs, to keep your wonderful wife happy. A beauty like her, that likes nerdy aircrafts, are in very rare minority. Love to your family.
Hi Joshua, I am writing to you from Italy, please can you tell me, in your opinion, how many turns can be done with the rubber band contained in the kit? Can I treat the elastic with silicone spray? Thanks, I see your tutorials every night !!
I think it's good for 600-800 turns. Definitely not more than that. Silicone spray is ok, however molycote silicone grease is better. Make sure it's one of the pure formulas with no petroleum oils added.
One stinkin pole and the model just has to hit it LOL anyway>>>>>>>you said to add some right thrust which is correct but why do you say to add left rudder?? BTW those senators fly like thier on rails, mine does too
For a plastic 12" prop, 12 strands of 1/8" rubber about 1.3x the hook to peg distance, braided. For a 12-13" wood prop, 16 strands really makes it come to life!
Well, if you are thinking of showing winders. What about a vid for us Newbies, tools, stands, paper?. I've been building and flying rc for 37 years, but I'm going to give free flight a try, it looks fun. Thanks Steveo

Mark Fannin there's something for everyone here!
What a nice flyer. Those old Keil Kraft airplanes are great. Never saw one that didn't fly very well. Glad Ripmax is re-producing them.
They are definitely a ton of fun!
Really enjoyed that last , just about to get a Keil Kraft Ajax flying again. need to work on trim , it used to climb very steeply, your Senator had a gentle perfect trim.
It's not gentle anymore. Hope went up to 16 strands and it climbs like a rocket now.

Since you mentioned the Mercury, have a look at one flying: ua-cam.com/video/QT4ZNAKKurc/v-deo.html

Really nice flight. I have a senator ready for covering. Just hope it flys half as well as yours!
The Great Hung smiled on that Senator. What a glorious, old-school flight! Maybe time to revisit the KK Competitor of my childhood...?
Crashrr definitely! They're all such nice fliers!
Great to see it in the air finally.

Great flying! Somehow, I never took to designs that had only one wheel, or no wheels. A personal quirk. This one-wheeler flies beautifully

It's a great airplane. The Mercury, its larger predecessor is equally good and absolutely beautiful. It's one of my favorite cabin models.

Ken King's Flying Machines growing up is a scam. Don't do it! (Building planes cures it)

At last some one who knows how to trim free flight ! Excellent
Great job! Question - when Josh says he's going to bend in left rudder, does he literally mean he bends the vertical fin? If not, how does one add left rudder on this type of plane. Thanks!
I have a bad habit of actually bending the vertical, better would be to add a clear plastic trim tab.

Hi josh, just about to build another senator having lost my previous two, what dt do you recommend please..
So graceful. It’s funny how free flight planes always find a dodgy place to land.
no doubt the senator is a wonderful flying model, loved mine so much I made a P30 version .............anyway I noticed at the end of the flight it wanted to go straight, am thinking since the power was at the end and in the glide mode thier was no thrust to turn the model, even with right rudder trim....so will leave it at that>>>>>>> next problem, how in the world is it you can power up going right but have a left glide turn, how is that done??
Right-left is easy. Use stab tilt and rudder to establish a left turning glide, then add right thrust until it turns right under power.
It always freaks me out to see you flying so near all the trees! And it still looks a little under elevated if you ask me!
We need to move the CG back. Hope upped the power to 16 strands and it got really loopy under power. Still was getting 300-400' climbs out of it though!
That got rather busy very quickly at the end there. Hope you found it again in the long grass. Your lad would disappear if you sent him in to collect it. 😁👍
