Finally, a chateau youtube that are actually renovating correctly. You show great respect for the history of the building and architecture. I appreciate it very much. Thanks for taking the quality approach, it's no wonder the government grant and the support of so many French locals are given here. The French are quite serious about excellence, and you are approaching it thus.
I am surprized, that you even dared to take this project on! Did you know, when you bought the Chateau, that you would be getting help from all of these conservation funds? I mean, what would you have done, if they had not stepped in, because the work and funds needed to restore the place, is mindblowing!
Deep respect for this restoration. Loved hearing about the different aspects of work. Masters in their fields. Romantic and captivating. Hello from Brisbane.
Seeing the stone artisans at work is fascinating. I am surprised to learn there are still such talented people doing that job. Good luck. I can’t imagine tackling such a huge job!
I follow a few châteaux vlogs, but yours is the one which most interests and excites me now. The craftsmanship, the pride in their work, the beauty. And your courage to take it on! The critical first step is to get the roof complete, everything follows that; the decoration will be fascinating to watch but that can be done over time, the roof is an emergency! Respect. 🌹🌹🇦🇺
I am so happy that I was able to watch this with the sub-titles.....it is so interesting and am very exciting to see the roof come to life again. This is going to be a wonderful restoration! Congratulations!
Fascinating to view the different artisans restore to original specifications. Time consuming and very labor intensive but end result is a magnificent masterpiece. Enjoy viewing your journey and the patience required to meet the government requirements.
It’s marvelous that there are folks willing to combine time and vision and financially able to take on these significant restoration projects. Each château saved is a blessing for France and her history.
What a great presentation! The stone quarry, followed by the stonemasons, the carpenters, and the slate workers, each presented in order of task dependencies. The only thing missing was a presentation of the Spanish slate quarry, and perhaps a discussion on the different colors of slate at the quarry, as was done with the stone quarry. And maybe show us the tapas at a nearby Spanish restaurant, too. :)
I can't wait to see her roof fully restored although I know its going to take alot of time and hardwork but the artisans make it look so easy ❤❤❤❤ The 360 views of purnon are stunning and gorgeous. It is definitely a labour of love and im here for it 🥰❤❤❤❤
What I love is that the artisans are reconstructing the chateau in much the same or exactly the same manner as was done in her first construction. How wonderful to have people who can still do this work! Magnifique!
Deep respect for the renovation to what was. Big applause to the craftsmen that seem so young and in keeping with old traditions and craftsmanship.. I look forward to watching the journey.
Hello from Nashville, Tennessee! The complexity of this Chateau amazes and astounds me. I don't know if there are quicker ways to apply what the building needs but it's wonderful to know that there are people who still know and understand how to rebuild in the original way. It's truly a miracle that these people possess the same skills! Pernon has such a lovely and elegant frame. I can't wait to see when the roof is completed! I bet you can't either! Best of luck and please keep these videos coming! I love them! Thank you!

What a fabulous video. Thanks so much for showing us all the different artisans that are involved in this monumental restoration. The chateau is so lucky that you are there to bring it back to life again.
The magnitude of this renovation is astounding as well as the craftsmanship. I can really tell that care and time have been taken to renovate this masterpiece.
That cornice was so beautifully rendered. I sas brought to tears to see it lifted and placed where it belongs.....where it will reside for hundreds of years. Just warms my heart to see the love, skill, hard work, craftsmanship, comradery, and perseverance it takes to restore such a magnificent Chateau.
I loved watching these techniques of the construction of the roof! You guys DO NOT get dishearted! There are a lot of people watching, praying and rooting for you guys! It’ll ALL be worth it ! And it’ll be absolutely beautiful!❤
OMG I loved this so much. Hearing these skilled tradesmen talk about what they were doing was fascinating. I could watch them work for hours. Also, the people overseeing the works etc were wonderful to listen to as they explained the choosing of the stone or the woodworking involved using traditional methods. Incredible.
Hello from Maryland, USA! Such an interesting introduction to centuries old craftsmanship. I loved how confident Franck was with demonstrating his craft!
I've always insisted that if I ever restored a home, the roof and foundation would be my first projects. Once those are done, you know that no more water damage will happen.
Amazing everything you are doing is truly great but coming from a roofing company here in America that I do realize is not France but if I may ask the question on why Arnt they not outfitting a protective tarp on top of the wood before nailing on your beautiful tiles, just in case there’s a leak between the tiles or you loose a tile or two in a storm it’s all about keeping your beautiful roof staying beautiful for if there’s a leak your going to have a big problem trying to fix it. Well I hope I’m not to out if line by asking you maybe you could have them put something down as soon as you can that way your wood will always be protected from damage!! All the very best to you😊& your Lovely husband!! Love your videos!! Though everyone could agree we’d love to see more and longer videos but we’re selfish in that way, we so enjoy them!!! @@thierrymilan2039 okay was hoping maybe it might help your beautiful roof didn’t know if you all had any input in it. Technology can be great, but a curse as well!! We work with a lot of customers here that love the Spanish tiles roofs though they are totally different from this but if you’re about to tell me that there wasn’t damage to the wood underneath those old tiles I will definitely keep this style in mind for the many clients moving here from Europe who have actually asked about this old style design. Fantastic job. Interesting to see the roof replacement/repairs. Amazing the skill, pride, dedication, craftsmanship and deep pockets in the undertaking of this restoration. I like restoring old property. Love the character and history. New builds leave me cold.

Thank you for sharing these videos with us. It is very interesting watching and hearing about the restoration from the workers. It is a gigantic project. It will cost a lot of both money and time. But she is definitely worth saving! 🙏She is so beautiful 🥰 She is very lucky to be saved by you two ♥️
What an incredible team of artists working to restore this beautiful chateau. It blows my mind how they ever managed in the 18th century to build and lift those heavy stones up to the roof. Can’t wait to see the completed roof. Thanks for sharing 😍😘
Thank you for this video. It was very interesting to hear from the architects and artisans working on the project. It is such a magnificent chateau and you are so courageous in breaking it back to life. It is such an enormous undertaking.
Greetings from the U.S. Thank you for sharing this magnificent and awe inspiring work of restoration with us. Thank you for sharing. I love the fact that you continue to highlight the 'team' involved with bringing Chateau de Purnon back to its former glory - a footprint for not only you, but for their families as well. You tell the 'story' so well, which also reflects your editing skills - a pleasure to watch. Oh, forgot to ask if Mademoiselle Truffle has a Monsieur in her life?

What an amazing project. Thoroughly enjoyed watching and learning. The architect has a massive undertaking that is exciting and terrifying all at the same time! I so appreciate all the progress….until the next video. Thank you for sharing ❤️
Mind-boggling how much work goes into the roofing.
Exactly. The roof is a work of art. But when it fails, it has catastrophic results for the rest of the building. So from both an aesthetic and practical perspective the roof requires incredible attention and skill.
Full of admiration - excellent skills and ambitions that has gone into this project. Definitely my dream project. Looking forward to see more episodes :)
I amazing it is so sad that the many owners did not at least keep the roofs maintained that is the down fall for many chateau's and legacy properties thank god you came to rescue this national treasure .
3:55 would be interesting to see a loot more of the wooden roof structure. I've not seen one like that, and its clearly something that could make for a stunning room if converted.
Can you please link to the video where owners are introduced and why your chateau was chosen for restoration funds. I believe you talked about this but I cannot find it now. Thousands, if not millions will be required to restore this chateau and I would like to read or see how the process works and criteria for each project. I find this very interesting since most chateau owners are coping on their own, with their own funds raised to do their restorations.
French law dictates that all châteaux must meet certain criteria to be legally described as such. So they vary greatly in size and shape. Purnon might not be Chambord or Versailles, but it is quite large compared to all of the château vlogs I follow, with the possible exception of Anna and Edd's in Bordeaux. Other than the shell that Dan "the gardener" recently revealed as his new project, Purnon is in the most deteriorated condition too. Even if Pernon's owners had Stephanie Jarvis' UA-cam followers, the process would probably still drag on for decades with all the bureaucratic red tape they must endure. Unfortunately, Purnon is unique or historic enough to be classified by the preservationists as requiring the strictest standards in its restoration. With such onerous restrictions the government should assist owners accordingly, especially since the owners open it up to the public once a year to share the country's rich legacy of magnificent private home ownership. I'm willing to bet that if the original roofers were on the project today, they would already be finished. They could use some of our Texas roofers to turn up the heat. Yeeha!
If I've understood correctly, most chateau owners prefer their buildings to not be "listed" as an historical monument (or property) because that designation means they are subject to the approval of a committee for most aspects of renovation. On the flip side, it also means they can apply for grants from the French government. I understood that they are planning the renovation funds of this chateau to largely come from those grants.
No one is born knowing how to restore an 18th century château. The accredited architects (ABF) for the various regional directorates (DRAC) of the Ministry of Culture not only impose restrictions but also provide valuable advice and counsel. When one is dealing with something as important as a nation's architectural patrimony, the usual and reflexive American libertarianism is misplaced.
Well thanks for the replies that don't answer my questions LOL😂 I would simply like the link to the video when owners were introduced and links to read about criteria to be designated a historic chateau to secure funding. Hoping the page owners can direct me. Thanks in advance. 😊

@@lisaakinlabi Hi Lisa - here is the link to the video you are referring to: ua-cam.com/video/BbtQWSLYDqQ/v-deo.html
On a trip to St. Etienne in the sixties, we were boarded in an old Chateau. The kitchen where we were served breakfast looked medieval. We got a bowl of coffee, a piece of bread, and a chunk of cheese. I don't know if the chateau exists anymore, it had countless rooms and was vacant and in poor condition, but it did have flush toilets.
Fantastic! Thank you for your dedication to this amazing building and for sharing the fabulous content. I so admire your approach. I am interested in the slate tiles. Are they installed directly on the wood roof sheathing?.
Have you ever considered a "sponsor a roof tile" program? Is that possible under French law? Lots of people would want to be able to say that they helped restore the 50k tiles, etc. They could buy 1 or 10 or 100 or however many they want. It could be put in a trust for the specific purpose, Les Amis de Château Pernon could direct funds for the intended project. After that's done you could create a sponsorship program for tufo stone or garden plants, etc.

Hi Ray - it is for this reason that we have created a Patreon account for those who would like to further support the restoration and have a deeper understanding of the project. One of our levels includes a gift of the château roof slate drink coasters so you actually own a piece of the old château roof. Here is the link if would interest you: www.patreon.com/chateau_de_purnon
This is an incredible,. What a journey? With this being a historic monument and you are getting all this work done, will it be for business, pleasure, or museum? Whatever it will be used for it is stunning and the grounds are spectacular. Time for me to research as I want to know it's history.
I have been looking forward to seeing further work on the chateau, unfortunately I cannot afford to be a Patreon, this means I am guessing, that I will see very little of the work as it progresses. Disappointing. It is a major undertaking and I admire you for taking on such a massive task.

I am playing catch up... started from the fist video about a week ago.... I am glad to see that in this video the captions are actually readable. Some in previous videos were grey on black and usually a dark background of the actual video. This white on black is much easier to read. Thank you...I have been enjoying your updates... and am still a bit befuddled with the names of the floor levels. I guess I am used to -> [sub or semi sub terrian being called a basement, the ground level being the first floor and numbered as such going up... with the upper most floor that may not be a full floor in highth of the ceiling or not have finished walls called an Attic] So are you calling the top floor... that is just under the roof... the second floor? Thank you for what you have commited to doing, and giving honor back to a house that whose original builder put great honor into.
Welcome to our channel. Regarding the floor levels - the basement level is below ground level but not underground because of the dry moat. Perhaps that is why it may be puzzling to you if you catch vision out of a basement window or door and you can see daylight. The ground floor is at the actual ground level here at the chateau. One enters this level from the outside having ascended a handful of steps as you would in most houses. The next level is the first floor. Above that is the second floor (but it is under the slate tile roof). This is the floor level that can be seen with its windows in stone dormers when viewing the chateau externally. Above the second floor lies the attic. This vast space (which is really several floors high when viewed standing on the attic decking) is (dimly) lit and aired by the smaller wooden dormers or skylights that can be seen in the roof structure when viewing the chateau from the front or back. Sometimes we use the French terms for these levels - we do so inadvertently as this is how we discuss the floor levels when we are taking to one another and to the tradespeople working on site. We do try and correct ourselves when we do this, but as a reference: The basement - le sous-sol Ground floor - le rez-de-chaussée 1st Floor - le premier étage 2nd Floor - le deuxième étage Attic - le grenier We hope that helps.
As I watch your vids, I keep feeling like you're overlooking the skills of the scaffolders. Maybe you cover that in another vid. I've been following for a few weeks. My husband's in construction. None of these artisans can do their work without the scaffold. It's skillfully adapted to adapt to the work needing accessed. It's safety is paramount. One jobsite had foolishness before the shift my husband was supposed to work, and it collapsed. Just don't want the scaffolders to not be recognized for their crucial role.

Thanks for your message. At Chateau de Purnon, the scaffolding is erected and managed by the stonemasons. We honour the work of our incredible stonemasons in most videos that we post. We are sorry to read of the incident at your husband's workplace. Having a safe platform for all the artisans to work from is crucial for safety here at Chateau de Purnon. We're thrilled that you're following our journey.

Thank you so much for your lovely comments. Mademoiselle Truffe is yet to find her Monsieur but maybe her parents are too protective!
What an extraordinary milestone and the results are stunning. You both continue to astound me with your energy and yet your achievements are exactly what I expected. Felicitations pour tout jusqu'à présent. Peux pas attendre de voir ça! ❤
Thanks Dibs! We can't wait to have you here!
It must be a privilege for these artisans to work on this chateau
Thank you for your message. We are in awe of the skills and expertise of our artisans. Saving Chateau de Purnon would be impossible without them.
Fascinating! So many artisans put to work. It will be gorgeous when it is finished.
thank you so much x
What an amazing project. Thoroughly enjoyed watching and learning. The architect has a massive undertaking that is exciting and terrifying all at the same time! I so appreciate all the progress….until the next video. Thank you for sharing ❤️
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you very much!
Thank you for sharing this amazing restoration ♥️
Our pleasure!
Hello from the USA. You are doing an impressive restoration job on that historic building.
thank you so much x
As an architect and historic preservationist, this is fascinating! Thanks-
thank you
Merveilleux....Merci !
Merci beaucoup pour votre message!
That was amazing. Thank you 🥰
pleasure!
I amazing it is so sad that the many owners did not at least keep the roofs maintained that is the down fall for many chateau's and legacy properties thank god you came to rescue this national treasure .
Wonderful. Pounding copper nails into oak is a job itself.
Just wonderful to see such incredible knowledge at work. 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
I loved the roof/slate tutorial!
he's wonderful isn't he!
3:55 would be interesting to see a loot more of the wooden roof structure. I've not seen one like that, and its clearly something that could make for a stunning room if converted.
lucky I can even follow the interviews in french! Bonne chance👍
kudos to all the craftspeople & congratulation 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Brilliant TRUELY such a GRAND JEWEL deserving of all this restoration. 👏👏👏 .Stunning
Many thanks!
Here is the link if would interest you:

il y a eu un chantier naval en france pour reconstruire la frégate de Lafayette l' "Hermione "et les nombreux visiteurs pouvait acheter un clou de marine.... rapportait beaucoup d' argent ...
Thinking of Notre Dame, I hope the risk of fire is kept front of mind. Hello from Sydney where there is another challenging roof.
This is an incredible,. What a journey? With this being a historic monument and you are getting all this work done, will it be for business, pleasure, or museum? Whatever it will be used for it is stunning and the grounds are spectacular. Time for me to research as I want to know it's history.
Beautiful
Thank you
Respect for these craftsman. ♥️🇿🇦
absolutely!
The roof is going to be beautiful when it's done.
I have been looking forward to seeing further work on the chateau, unfortunately I cannot afford to be a Patreon, this means I am guessing, that I will see very little of the work as it progresses. Disappointing.
It is a major undertaking and I admire you for taking on such a massive task.
Hi Veronica - I am a little confused by your disappointment. We are putting a lot of work into sharing as much of the restoration as possible on all our social channels including a daily update on Instagram with additional exclusive content on Patreon to support the restoration project. If you follow on Instagram you will see a daily update 5 days a week on our stories: instagram.com/chateaudepurnon/
I would just die with renovating one room, but a whole ass palace. No sir.
amazing!!!
Thank you!!
We do try and correct ourselves when we do this, but as a reference:
The basement - le sous-sol
Ground floor - le rez-de-chaussée
1st Floor - le premier étage
2nd Floor - le deuxième étage
Attic - le grenier
We hope that helps.
Magnificent ❤
thank you!
Bravo!!!!!!
merci!
wow what a roof!!!
Can the good slate recovered from the chateau roof be used on the chapel?
Thanks for your reply. I may have missed that coverage of your stone masons.
Curious where all the stone corners missing this is why they were all replaced?
they had fallen down
@ Oh my goodness!
Soualie
How are they going to nail down the slate of the row below, now that it's covered by the one above??? Just curious.
they start at the lowest point and work up securing each tile with two copper nails
@ Well, precisely. Watch the video again at 18:28. The slate nailed in the demo prevents laying out the one just below. He should have done row 2, not 5.
why is the roof timber ( directly behind the slates) not covered in a modern roof ' felt ' / membrane
I think the modern isolating lining is underneath the timber, not the slates themselves.
