I love the fact that I’m binge watching James’ videos, I’m signed up to his 30 day emails….he is literally explaining to me how he is building like, know, and trust to eventually make me more likely to pay for his services, and yet here I am. It’s so meta. I know I’m being sold to, but the value he is giving me for free is so great that I’m absolutely here for it.
They say ‘try to appeal to everyone, you appeal to no-one’ - but yeah, bullshit. I used to hate it when people used to ask what my ‘speciality’ was as a PT. No, tell me your needs, I can probably help.
James! I’ve just listened to you on Eventful Lives podcast. I am not your usual customer avatar but I have online courses teaching hairdressers how to use Instagram to get more clients. What I teach is adaptable across the board. I’ve been planning to broaden my niche to small to medium bricks and mortar businesses. Ones that need to customers to come to their physical location. Food. Cafes. Bookshops. Boutiques. Grocers. Whoever is on the high street and needs customers. This video landed in my life at the exact right time. I would love to work more with you on my online courses. How do I go about signing up?
Thank you for confirming what I have suspected for a while! I have been trying to apply this advice of "niching down" in my business for months and it just never made any sense to me. I think what they actually mean when they say "niche down" is SPECIALIZE in one skill set. Meaning: Become really good at one aspect of your business so that you have a competitive advantage.
In the software industry (and no doubt in others), what you're talking about with the avatar thing, we'd call ICP (ideal customer profile). Emphasis on 'ideal'. You might have other customer profiles that are relevant, and it's important you don't exclude them for the sake of the ICP. Exactly the same concept you describe. ICPs apply at the company level too, if you are B2B/consultancy.
I can see your point but niching down is a 2 way street. By being very specific you are making it much easier for people to identify that you are the right choice to solve their problem.
I see this all the time on Linkedin, in people's bios. They are business coaches (for example), but only for one gender etc. I've actually seen services that I would consider buying, or at least getting to know about the person more, but are instantly put off and made to feel excluded. Doesn't seem like a good business strategy for most, as I can't see how their advice/services would be different, based on someone's gender.
Love your approach and I really don’t want to niche down, but aren’t you niching down when you see their problems and target them with your communication?
Hehe, if you want a fast track degree in business go do a thew car boots at a market which should I say is ethnically diverse, you'll learn more about business then you would going to university for 5 years.
am i the only one that thought the 30 day email chain from james just wasn’t the one? he promotes email marketing but for me, it just doesn’t really work no hate, and love the info on this channel etc, anyone else thought the same?
James, I just signed up to your newsletter and there's a mistake in the email I received "So you now offer 10% off your services in a bid to get people over the line to join. 10% of 30 is 3, so now you charge £27. But your costs are still £15, so your take home has gone from £15 to £13. That 10% reduction is a 15% reduction to your take home" Take home would be £12, which makes it a 20% reduction Do I get a prize or am I just another annoying tit that has pointed it out haha.
@@JamesSmithBusiness I'm just starting out in the big wide world of self employed, at my second client and could use the wisdom of others. I wouldn't mind an invite into what you're doing, I see you as no bs. You don't ask you don't get, sometimes it pays to be cheeky?
I wouldn’t say his niche is personal branding. It’s for sure just content that attracts fitness business owners you could call that a niche but it’s more of a group of people he’s talking to

I always say a good trainer should be able to get anybody from A to B regardless of goals. Hence the “personal” part of the job title 😂
You had me subbed at rug munching 😂
It's refreshing to hear someone say niche properly
Got to NITCH down
Great video. Affirming my thoughts and resistance to going too granular. Enjoying the new content. Thanks 👍🏼

James is our business older brother that we all needed.
Yes!! Thank you! At last, someone talking sense!
Great work, I’m in a similar field however always room to learn from people. I just subscribed
Cutting down the pool. 😊
Finally someone who pronounces “niche” correctly.
I have found that being a white straight male I do put on more weight when I eat more than I move.
I see "rug munching" is now showing up on my fitness pal.. Good news is the macros are good.
I think the Jaguar marketing team need to watch this video...

takeaway is *if you are to niche*. then niche the problem, not the avatar?
Proof of common sense.
Now do Jaguar… 🐆🤣
Brah, fuckinell.
They have trended up bigly off the back of it.
They are trending but not in a helpful way. Being the subject of memes on X wont lead to sales. Painfully stupid move.
It's like Bud Light '23 all over again... maybe they hired the same marketing agency?
Love your approach and I really don’t want to niche down, but aren’t you niching down when you see their problems and target them with your communication?
Your barbecues must be a tense place

What do you think for niche down at the begining to make a name firt, i thing in the overcrowed space of fitness, and then get wither?
truth bombs 💣
Having ads turned off on your channel, smart
Adsense is peanuts

Lesbian diet niche is crazy
I hope Jaguar is fkn listening!

Clicked just to like
That haircut is niche
I've also been waiting for a lesbian fat loss coach 😂
Wait I adore Formula 1 but I think it's a bit shit as well
But your niche is personal branding now? So it’s a bit hypocritical

@ all the content he’s making right now is about making a personal brand. It’s not just for fitness individuals.
Tbh all coaches are full of dhit. Including you

@JamesSmithBusiness I mean tbh use what's useful. throw away the rest
Hahahaahaha
