Why Andre 3000 Sabotaged His Career (On Purpose)

  • Across generations and various waves of the genre, a fine line has existed between becoming a legend and ending up as a shadow of your former self. Taken from performing to seas of people in arenas to the diminishing returns of the nostalgia circuit, there’s a case to be made for your reputation in hip-hop coming down to whether or not you outstay your welcome. But while some of the game’s biggest rappers have tried to stand in defiance of the clock and occasionally stumbled as a result, today’s story is that of a man who has chosen to hold any dreams of reclaiming his spot at a safe distance and has basically done the unthinkable in some people’s eyes.
    Of course, we’re talking about the one, the only, Andre 3000. Ask anyone in hip-hop circles about Andre Benjamin, better known by the name of Outkast’s Andre 3000, and you’re more than likely to hear them discuss his position among the greatest to ever grasp a mic. From Travis Scott to Future and Childish Gambino, his influence and the respect that he commands is more universal than practically anyone still breathing.

    Also think of this with Andre, he was doing music since he was 17-30, it’s quite possible he wanted to know more of who he was other than just a man that could rhyme well. Like, it’s like those athletes who by 30 some are confused because their life just revolved around sports for so long and all relationships came from sports and they don’t know who they really are.
    Man, honestly if he don’t make music anymore that’s cool. I really hope that brother is in a good space. Like the vid mentioned his parents death has affected him, I remember he did put a song out on Mother’s Day a couple of years ago, it does remind you that holidays like that aren’t happy for everyone.
    Also that class of 3000 show was cool, I liked that show

    • @thewriter8762
      @thewriter8762 2 роки тому +44

      I think the crux of all this is that he understands it’s more than just the music. You nailed it on the head as to where if you are so entrenched in a certain group, you see yourself as only existing in that group. That you can’t expand and grow. Rn Kendrick has taken a long hiatus and he’s been gone for so long, trying to do his own thing and he is having people practically turning on his music saying it wasn’t that good, just because he isn’t dropping a new album on our timetable. Artists are people, and if they don’t wanna be more than just that artist, they are well within their rights to do so.

    • @genius179
      @genius179 2 роки тому +26

      @@thewriter8762 100% correct they are with their right. If they do not think they have a passion for music right now then do not release. Many of us can tell when it seems forced, and that is likely when some crap comes out.
      The wildest part is it seemed in interviews even though the clothing line and tv show were not huge successes (again class of 3000 was a fun show to me), he enjoyed the experiences of trying those projects. It's great too because that is how life is supposed to be, always trying something new whether it is a small as cooking a new dish or starting a new business.
      He always trying something different, remember he was acting in a few movies in the 2000s (Four Brothers, Idlewild, Semi-Pro). He's actually a good actor from what I remember. I never saw the Jimi Hendrix movie but I heard his performance was good in that.

    I don’t see it as “sabotaging” his career, I see it as he had his time and the peak of outkast then felt like it’s not his time anymore, so he did not force it. I love this man and I think he’s a genius. By stopping, he protected his craft and himself too since he’s an introvert and needs to be away from the spotlight and at the same time everyone loves him and respect him.

    We want to hear the tale of one of the greats after the glitter magic. Of them realizing they have changed, the new struggles they go through, dealing with getting old, but most importantly: how they continue to be that person (or a form of that person). How their outlooks have changed and/or remain the same.
    We didn’t fall in love with the hip. We fell in love w/ that hop even when u feel like you flop.

    Love that Andre is unafraid to be exactly where and what he is…he’s extremely authentic. The videos are extremely beautiful and like eye candy! I’m using Hey Ya to teach HS critical thinking. There’s so very much packed into this human. I stumbled upon learning about OutKast when I was babysitting my grandson and played HeyYa and saw the images and color in the video. It just sucked me in to wanting to know more. Then I remembered a few songs of the past, like Rosa Parks and (OMG) Roses! What a bold song!! There’s music and music makers and then there’s people like Andre, undefinable but with a background track that makes you feel like you’re in the presence of someone very unusual and important but not in a systemic way, like a breaking free way. ❤

    That's... Amazing for me. Being a writter and have wrote something that is beyond me (That would be my definition of art, something that transcend beyond the author), all this is a lesson. I cannot do what i did 13 years ago. I am not that kid who had the heart (the hip) but did not had everything else. So i cant be hung up to that and try to write the same way. I am older, wiser and while im not young anymore, it does not mean i cannot reach people anymore, its just another way.
    And im writing this because this channel has helped me a lot right now, and not just on this, but on my personal life too. I've learned a lot from this. So, thanks man.

We're hungry for his honest lyrics. Outkast era had a positive outlook, life in the 2020's less so but we'll still need music to relate to our feelings. I'll welcome his take on this new world.

    what he said in the very beginning, I can relate to so much. I used to make music, play in bands, do shows, make my own music at home on the computer...but at some point I lost the motivation, I wanted to write and record something, but every time I started, I thought "this is awful. no one is going to listen to this, and if they do, they'll laugh at it" etc etc. I just couldn't stop the negative self-talk, telling myself how much I suck.
    so I sold my guitars, pedals, amp, PA system, everything, dissolved my bands, and quit music altogether. that was about 15 years ago. I still want to make music sometimes, but those thoughts remain.

    I think his sentiments regarding ageism in hip hop are poignant but at the the same time I think he sells himself short by playing into those ageist ideals… There are plenty of hip hop acts in their 40’s-50’s that are killing it. As long as one remains true to themselves than it doesn’t really matter what others think of you.

    I feel like Andre is not making music for a few reasons.
    1. Music today is not very good, with limited subject matter.
    2. Hip hop fans are very fickle, they tell you, "you're a legend, I love you, yada yada yada.
    But won't support, and buy the album.
    3. He doesn't want to be the old guy, still trying to rap.
    Listen to his verse on Rosa Parks.
