  • On this great Porgy & Bess chart I did with my Ken Loomer Big Band, I have a two part drum solo to perform at this concert. I`m using my classic 1970 Slingerland classic drums with the 24 inch bass drum and the full open sounding drums. In part one of my drum solo, I`m doing a lot of drum patterns I made up on just the snare drum with accents before going around the drums and cymbals. Then I go into a half time feel to bring the band back into the arrangement. For part two of my solo I will go into a simple, but very fast single stroke roll on just my left hand for over 60 seconds. I will match the speed with my bass drum to what my left hand is doing. Then around the cymbals for my big ending. As a jazz drummer, I will always do something different when doing a solo. I have learned this from the great Big Band drummers like Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson, Sonny Payne, Jeff Hamilton, and Ed Shaughnessy. When playing these live concerts, so important to make your solo interesting and dynamic for the people who come to see you.

      I`m glad you were able to find some of my Big Band video`s and enjoyed watching them. My goal was to put together a world class Big Band which I did with hard work and the desire to do these type of concerts down here in Florida. The days of the road Big Bands is long over with. No agents wants to book a Big Band anymore. When was the last time you ever saw a jazz musician or jazz band on any of the Late Night Talk Shows? It`s Never!!! So the best I can do is post these concerts of my Ken Loomer Big Band on my channel and have the few people who enjoy this type of music something they can enjoy seeing and hearing. Thanks so much for your comment.

      @@rikiabraham Always a chance if I get a big sponsor to set up a tour, get the tour bus, carry a sound and set-up crew, and be able to promote the concerts. Here in Florida I`m able to book the jobs myself, hiring the musicians, put all the music together and bring them and the band stands to the gigs, promote my concerts, the musicians can travel on their own since all the jobs within a 100 miles. So if you know of a big sponsor willing to book a world class Jazz Big Band, let me know. I`m willing to do all the work of a Big Band leader to get it done.

      Buddy is the reason why I have my own Big Band. I got to know him and he was always so kind to me. I even got a drum lesson from the master and he let me play his Slingerland drums. One time I told Buddy I wanted to have my own Big Band like his because I love the music he played so much. Buddy told me "Ken, don`t ever let anyone tell you can`t have your own Big Band to play the music you love. Just work hard young man and do it". Well I did work hard and as you can see, I have this great Big Band playing the music I love. Buddy Richesque. Nicely done. More dynamics, though, please. Your band, your playing is fabulous, but I want to see you hammer some accents into those solos like Buddy did.

    • @KenLoomer
      @KenLoomer  2 місяці тому

      I will agree with you if what you said was true. My solo was full of accents and dynamics! Starting at the 0:16 mark I`m doing rim shots for accents and of course cross hitting the sticks during this snare solo. The accents is what makes the snare solo swing. Nothing is straight playing with no accents on the snare solo I did. Can you you hear this? Then at the 2:34 mark I`m doing just the super fast left hand singles with accents on the bass drum. Then I bring the volume of the bass drum very low to match the speed and sound of my left hand. That is dynamic`s which is hard to do with bass drum control. Then I bring the volume up by going around the set with crash cymbal accents. If you can point out where I`m doing no accents in this solo, I want to learn since I can not hear it! Am I missing something? I heard dynamic`s even in the band arrangements. When the band comes in at the 1:54 mark, it`s not that loud. Then it builds up to a much louder ensemble playing when it goes to 6/8 time. This is what I told my musicians how I wanted this part of the arrangement to sound like. I thank you for liking the way my Big Band played this part of the chart, but I have to disagree that I played with no accents and dynamic`s and the band had no dynamic`s. Thanks for your comment.

      Ken, don't misunderstood me. Your band has excellent dynamics. What I am humbly suggesting is regarding your solos. They are technically excellent, but can be a bit monotone at times. I'm looking at you and thinking this guy is one step away from superb and its just bringing the greatness of Gene and Buddy into your solos. Same technical greatness, but with more explosiveness. I'm sorry if my comments come across as criticism. I'm also a older drummer who has seen Buddy, Gene, Louis and many others live. I'm just trying to constructively, in my opinion, make suggestions that take you to the next level. Watch my channel FourWallDrummers for examples of how we solo. I'm not suggesting that it's superior, but it may help make my point.

      @@fourwalldrummers For me as a drummer, it`s always about the music first. I`m in my 20th year as a Big Band leader. I love the Big Band music so much and did all the work of having the best Big Band possible with musicians who I love working with. Most drummers would never do all of this work of being a band leader. I`m not into just being a drum soloist. I`m into being a musician playing great music for the people in these concerts that I do. With my drumming, I want to support my fellow musicians and make the music exciting and dynamic for the people who come to my concerts. I`m 69 now and have worked hard to be the best drummer and band leader that I could be. I workout all the time to stay in shape since doing a two hour concert and driving a Big Band, then doing my solo at my age is not that easy. I`m still learning all the time to write better music and to learn more about drumming at my age. No way can you judge a drummer by only one video. I have a huge body of work on my channel playing all types of jazz music live with my bands. Go check out this video of another full solo I did at another concert ua-cam.com/video/SvXupZe8Xaw/v-deo.html Lots of accents, dynamic`s, technique, playing relaxed, humor, and the people loving it. That is what counts the most. I got another standing ovation for that solo. I`m sure you must be an excellent drummer knowing about Buddy ,Gene,and Louie. I knew all of those drummers. Louie gave me some of his charts I wanted to play, and Buddy even gave me a drum lesson, and let me play on his Slingerland drums. Here is the video showing pictures of me with all of those drummers ua-cam.com/video/BTsnnA6nlvk/v-deo.html Let me know what video on your channel I should watch of you playing in a band and then taking a solo I should watch. Just give me the link and I will for sure check it out and leave a comment. Us older drummers can play with anybody in any band with the knowledge we have. Amazing solo, I was wondering if you make an income from these concerts and gigs? I’m a young teen and my dream is to be a drummer with my own band, I am just worried with the decline of jazz and in the future if that will even be a possibility? Do you have a second job to make a living or do you get to just play drums as a job?

      I`m a full time working band leader with of course my Ken Loomer Big Band, Jazz Trio, and Jazz Quartet. In my area which is Florida Tampa Bay area, I`m the only Big Band working and as you would know, it`s very rare any musician would do all the work of putting together a world class Big Band. I make a very good income as the only Big Band working in my area doing concerts. Not like the old days of the road Big Bands playing 6 nights a week. That is why I also have a Jazz Trio, and Jazz Quartet playing clubs and music events all over the state. If you want to have your own band, you got to be a an excellent and smart business person and knowing how to do it. What instrument do you play? You are right jazz music is not the poplar music anymore, so you must be an excellent musician who can put together a great band. Then be willing to do the all the work of finding the best musicians for your band, putting together all the music you want to play, finding the jobs and knowing how to contact the venues you want to play in. Then of course getting your own sound system, mic`s mixing board and how you will transport everything. Most import is to promote your band and music and video your concerts so people can see and hear them to get more jobs. Then set up a music banking account so you can pay your musicians you hire. Have your own website to promote you and your band. Since I`m willing to do all of this work, I`m booked all 52 weeks of the year. I`m very well known in my area with the best jazz band playing anywhere in the state of Florida. I have to turn down work since I`m all booked up. Check my channel of well over 1000 gigs I have posted. As you can see in this video, I got a standing ovation for my performance because the people will let you know in real time how you are doing. I always get repeat gigs since people love the bands I have put together. I1m the hardest working drummer in my area and all the best musicians want to work in my bands. So where do you live? What kind of band do you want to put together? Are you are a young teen musician willing to do all of this work I told you about? Do you have any video`s of your playing? It`s great that a young person like you wants to have a jazz band. So I have giving you lots of great advise. Are you willing to do all of this? Let me know.

      @@KenLoomer Thanks so much for the advice, I play drums in Seattle, and want to create a big band or a small combo of some kind. At the moment I have certainly been putting in the work being in The WMEA Jr. All-State jazz band two years in a row (meaning I have been the #1 ranked middle school drummer in the state two years in a row), won the state competition with my school band, and participated in the district honor band. There are high schools that want me to attend them so I can play drums for them. The work now though is light where you only need to have skill. I did not really think about all the work you had to do to be as successful as you are, I very much appreciate the insight and aspire to be a great like you. I went to the University Of South Florida and got my degree in Business. I of course played in the bands when I went to college. One year I won best soloist for college division players at the national jazz teachers music festival. If you work hard and have the desire to reach your goal, I for sure believe you can do it.
