Great video, it's so nice to see videos of this type where you just lay out the series without opinion or spoilers. I am surprised no mention of the audio books; they are perhaps my favorite audio books because James Marsters does such a fantastic job.

I enjoyed this overview even though I'm a Dresden veteran and have done a full re-read since it's one of my fav series! I would probably have circled the exact same two books in each grouping f 5 books that you did! Totally fair criticisms to warn people about, no doubt it's not perfect.

    Awesome intro :DD
Dresden was my first urban fantasy ever, so I didn't even notice that the earlier books "weren't that great" (as I heard later on booktube). The novelty of the concept just kept me going all the way to Battleground...I really wonder how the series will continue.

The biggest plus to the series is that the audiobooks are narrated by James Marsters who would have been perfect to play Harry in an adaptation.

could you do one on the Rangers apprentice series? I'm interested in it but want to know more about it first.
Also thank you for including the parents guide in these because as an adult I like reading complicated stuff that explores things like morality but I don't like gory or explicit stuff I find it gross, I hate it when people just assume that because I'm an adult I can handle it. I might be able to handle it but that doesn't mean I like it in my stories. So thank you.

Hi! Suscribed last week after youtube recommended me your Throne of Glass video. Because I've had a couple of Dresden files books in my tbr for years now I decided to watch this one too (btw, love your humour, editing skills and how you explain things!) And anyway I just wanted to tell you that you are now my favorite booktuber just for the fact that you added Zayn on this video lol. So see, now I gotta read this series if you added my favorite singer as a fancast.

So, not complaining about your casting choices. They're all very good ones. But...
I think David Harbour would make a better Morgan than Michael. OTOH, I think for Michael and Charity Carpenter, the casting should be John Krasinski and Emily Blunt. Oh, and Mads Mikkelsen is genius casting for Nicodemus.
On another note, you might have wanted to mention all the "M" names in the series. Even Butcher was surprised when it was pointed out to him. I could see some folks MIGHT get a bit confused the first time through the series.
    Murphy
    Molly
    Mouse
    Mister
    Mac
    Mike (the mechanic)
    Michael
    Mortimer
    Mab
    Maggie
    Margaret
    The Merlin
    Morgan
    Madrigal
    McCoy
...and probably a couple I've forgotten.
Edit: Martin (geeze... I just finished Changes. That name should have been fresh on my mind)

Hey, thanks for this video. I'm especially glad that you mentioned the 3rd book being the point where we can get a better sense of the series. I read the first book and found it alright, but it didn't make me want to keep reading. Now maybe jump to the 3rd instead (though I like doing things from start to finish .... hmmm). Either way, I am also very intrigued by all the characters you described (and enjoyed your fan castings) so at least you've given me some more motivation to keep reading.

Yeah it's tough sometimes, if you want to read every book out there. But there's only so much time in the day. Sometimes skipping books can actually help you read more in total.
Personally I struggle to stop reading series if I'm not enjoying it. I always think 'I've come this far!' Thats why i read the whole Sword of Truth series! :/ It it's always better to read what you actually enjoy.

late to the party but nice to see an objective book recommender. at the time of seeing this video I have read up to Proven guilty. though im not sure i agree with the 3rd being where it gets off. I found grave peril and storm front together having a problem of being incoherent and unsure of itself. like I didn't read fool moon til about a year after storm front, thats how much i disliked the first book. for me, the fourth book is really where things built up well enough for me to stick with the series. til proven guilty where the male gaze problem hit peak uncomfortability for me

    Light spoilers below
Minor correction: Thomas' curse is a little more complicated than described. They can't touch another person that's in love unless they have a relationship.
And by relationship it can mean a kiss ten years before, if nothing else happened in the meantime. Like Thomas and Justine, Lara couldn't touch Dresden because Harry still hadn't any relationship since Susan.
IIRC, Justine broke her "protection" against Thomas by making out with another girl in front of him. Since then, they could do the nasty for a long time.
I'm sure that I got some details wrong too, btw. Corrections on my correction are welcome.

Harry Dresden kind of reminds me of Magnum P.I.. seems silly doesn't seem to take anything seriously, yet if you need someone to count on, or the s*** hits the fan, he's the one to go to and his personality can do a 180 pretty quick.

I’m on book 4 and struggling to stay interested 🥲 Book 1 was good but I *hated* the werewolf plotline in book 2. Book 3 was great, mainly because I loved Michael 🥹 but man, I’m almost at the end of book 4 & it’s making me want to give up. I’m finding it boring and confusing. Is it worth it to continue the series?? I will say I’m listening to the audiobooks and James Marsters does such an AMAZING job of bringing Harry’s character to life, can’t imagine reading these books any other way ❤

    • @jodonnell64
      @jodonnell64 4 місяці тому +1

As The Book Guy says the series gets better with each book. Also Marsters gets better with each book (Storm Front was his first ever audiobook reading). As for whether you should continue, my recommendation would be yes. Give it to at least book 7 (Dead Beat), then after that, try to make it to book 12 (Changes - the only book so far in the series where the title isn't two words with the same number of letters per word. There's a reason for that). If nothing else, after you finish book 4, you COULD just jump to 7 and 12, but there are some things early in the series that come back to bite Harry in the ass later that you might miss and be somewhat confused about. Yes, Butcher does a good job of reintroducing characters and plot points when needed, but I'm a completionist, so like to read each and every book.
BTW, I'm on my third re-read (via audiobook, since I can listen at work) in three years, and will probably do a fourth when book 18 is soon to be released. Butcher has said he should be finished with it before the end of this year, which means probable release first or second quarter next year.

I never made it through the first book. To be fair, I didn't make it through Harry's first meeting with a woman in the first book. I've had people tell me it gets better, but never found the spoons to keep trying. I'm glad you included that bit on representation. The series is not for me. Check, I can get on with life, now.

  • @mtverv
    @mtverv Рік тому

Hey there just found this channel and video so I thought I’d lay down my two cents. My first point is that the common rebuke I use for people who complain about the way Harry thinks about women (which does make them too sensitive btw I disagree with you about that it’s actually the very definition of too sensitive lol) is “Would you like to be Judged by every Internal Thought you have during some of the worst days of your life?” Tends to shut them up toot sweet.
My second point is you were a little off base about the White Court. Not only do they not feed on emotions, actually feeding on people’s soul/lifeforce whatever you want to call it, only 1 of the Noble Families uses Lust as the Conduit to access that Energy. The other 2 Major Houses Skavis and Malvora use Despair and Fear respectively as their Conduits.
Third point is that I not only disagree with you on Butters Poly Relationship (the representation you were describing) I VEHEMENTLY disagree with you. The point of showing that relationship as Representation was for Single Male Multiple Female Poly Relationships which are, BY FAR, the most underrepresented kind of non-Monogamous or not strictly Hetero relationship in Mainstream Fiction and Media. Every single Poly relationship you see has multiple Men and either multiple women or a single woman. Never Single Male Multiple Female. It’s actually quite daring in this Political and Social Climate to portray this kind of Relationship, especially as Jim has to know what kind of reputation his Series has with the SJW crowd.
Anyway those are my two cents. This has certainly been one of the better Series Primer videos I’ve seen on Dresden. I disagree with you on a few things but hey Reasonable Discourse may not be the Spice of Life but it can be the meal that fills you up and keeps you warm. Thanks for taking the time to read my ramblings and have a wonderful day!

I love this review. I'm at White Night currently. I am glad you are addressing the male gaze stuff as a male. I can very much understand people having problems with it. Personally I would say it fits Harry's very limited upbringing, only by a tough farmer-wizard and being used by his mentor. I'm not defending it at all, but I can forgive it for that reason. Still it's made me uncomfortable as a male as well 😅
There being no representation on the other hand. Yes, it is kind of very unnecessarily obvious.

Great video, love these series overviews of yours :)
At this risk of coming across as "that guy" though, I just want to offer my perspective on the parts of the series that you referred to as kinda problematic, ie. the stuff about sexualized gazes and lack of most lgbt perspectives.
I kinda get what you mean, but I also think calling it problematic isn't quite right.
Ultimately books are gonna be aimed at different audiences to some extend. And to say that some of the content in a series is problematic because it's aimed mostly at people that like attractive women I think isn't quite fair.
I mean, there's an enormous portion of the book market that caters to other persuasions and niches, but this isn't something that to my knowledge is considered problematic.

Ironically, i liked the tv show but the books are so not my thing. Especially when in every book we had a character holdthe idiot ball. I read 14 of the books before as sitting defeat and cry uncle. Also, holy shit, i absolutely do not agree with the take about the female characters. There was an attempt but I would give it a solid 3. However I love how much you love it. :)

@@cronkthebookguy i liked the world. I liked quite a bit about the IDEAS in it. And i sis have fun with the mysteries. Also absolutely everybody around me was raving how i just don't understand and I need to give them a chance. I am not going to deny the skills Butcher has. He is really good at writing an interesting series. It's just that at some point the lack of progression on the side of Dresden grated. YET!!! Your video was so nice, i am genuinely debating if I should give the series another chance. 🤭
Seanan McGuire is a fantastic writer and i have enjoyed everything i have read. That said, j strongly recommend practical guide to evil and pale lights. Both of those are online and not traditionally published. I don't recall the name of the author.

@Eneya Vorodecky oh! That makes a lot of sense. I really appreciate your thoughts. Dresden is a fascinating character to me, but I think you're right in that he doesn't progress too much. His arc is all about struggling with darkness and anger. But I kinda wish he could struggle with maturity and growth. Maybe even emotional health. God forbid a male character has emotional health! :D
I asked about reading 14 books, because I once read the 12 books in the Sword of Truth, even though I literally hate the series. I did it out of stubbornness and spite! Thought maybe you did the same with Dresden! :D

Joe Abercrombie, Mike Carey and Ben Aaronovitch do this better. Where are the women and queer folks writing fantasy crime? Cos I'd be on it. Lee Child is also not bad at women, though still no queer stuff. Shame.
