Rhythm of War - The WORST Stormlight Book???

I love the Stormlight Archive! There is no such thing as a bad Stormlight book. Yet every time I see people ranking the four Stormlight books, Rhythm of War tends to be lowest. The Edan Trilogy by Dr Philip Chase - Classic Fantasy is Back!

Welcome back! We're discussing the Edan trilogy by Philip Chase. @PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy The Edan trilogy is High Fantasy, in the style of the Lord of the Rings. At this point, I'm convinced that The Last Jedi's biggest flaw is apparently putting people to sleep. As I've yet to see a criticism of it that doesn't rely on missing everything that happens in the second half of the movie. And frankly, I'm tired of the lie about "subverting expectations." That was used exclusively to talk about how The Force Awakens is too similar to a new hope by some estimations. It's just saying the last jedi isn't a retreat of the empire strikes back. Stop divorcing it from context because the movie didn't magically make you 12 again.

  • @MatthewGagnon1980
    @MatthewGagnon1980 День тому

    The people who defend the length are absolutely insufferable, in my opinion. You always hear, "I like this universe, I WANT to spend more time in it." And while I get liking the world, you can ALWAYS stuff more and more and more into any world you build as an author, and the die hards will chew it up... but it overburdens the narrative and makes it a slog to get through. You had mentioned the people who read it quickly liked it while the people who took longer didn't.. I think what you're missing is that a lot of those people (definitely including me) who took weeks ended up taking weeks because it was so difficult to get through it given all the extraneous garbage. You talk about everything being so essential... but you're thinking of the overall plot beats, and you are not considering how long it takes to get to them. This book was absolutely intolerable in parts, and it came from how endlessly weighed down it was by pointless length that gave you virtually nothing. Shakespeare said that "brevity is the soul of wit," because a text can be overwhelmed by too many words and too many things done and said, which ultimately distract from the thrust of the story. The ENTIRE LOTR saga can fit into ONE of Brandon's books, and yet the world-building, characters, etc are all richer and more developed. How? How did Tolkien do that with such little time? Modern fantasy fiction, as a genre, has this problem where people mistake length for quality and detail. They see big books and almost grow arrogant about reading them, as though you getting through them means you are a bigger fan or smarter or the story is more interesting. Funny how thrillers, mysteries, horror, etc are all able to tell compelling, rich, detailed stories in 300 pages, but somehow fantasy NEEDS 1300 page books to really fully explore fictional universes. Come on. Should this have been 300 pages? No... but it could've been 600 or 700 pages easily, and it would've lost none of its narrative direction.

    12:54 man, I need to catch up on all your videos because I didn't know you don't like captivity plot-lines. The book I'm writing has many accounts of capture (over 20 and counting) this also means I have a lot of escapes which are part of the reason I use capture so much in my stories. But yes, slowing or stopping the story is a valid critique of the plot device.

    • @cronkthebookguy
      @cronkthebookguy День тому

      Haha dont worry. Captivity plotlines can work. But I swear 90% of the time, they don't. I always dread seeing them. I talk about them in my rhythm of war video, showing how they can work sometimes.

    Thanks for your video! I also had a great time reading it and I think a lot of his choices made sense to me too as it pertained to the relevance of which plot lines he pursued. I quite liked the open ended nature of all the character fates and I’m so excited to see what he does in the meantime before we come back to SA. However, the prose really took me out of the story in this one and while actual events hit high highs for me this was the most challenging from that perspective. Kaladdin is my favorite character and while I also wanted to see him spring into action more I thought the one time we got it (won’t mention for spoilers sake) albeit quick was a nice nod.

    Love how you discussed a series you don’t like, I love this series and think you did it justice, I’m a reader that doesn’t pick up on those annoying things like ‘everyone snarling’ which probably helps, I also did not find celaena to be overly angry, I skipped the assassins blade until after kingdom of ash, not knowing where it fit, I tried skipping tower of dawn, I agree I don’t like it but it did introduce a lot of new characters, and found portions of kingdom of ash confusing so went back and read it, I’m glad I pushed through it I do find with S.J.Maas fans most either love TOG or ACOTR but usually not both, I enjoyed ACOTR but did not love it, it is not a series I will go back to read anytime soon, I also did not finish it, off to watch that video next though, maybe you’ll change my mind
