Hey Dereck, WOW That was Great. What a modest and kind man. And what a career he has had. Thanks for asking the right questions that ended up informing us of his great career from the beginning to the present. Take care Dereck
What a great interview. Chester seems like a really likable guy. I’ve heard only a little of the new album so far, but it really struck me how live, powerful, and in your face the drums are. I saw the Zappa band with Chester doing one of those early performances of “Inca Roads” in 1974 before it was recorded. It had a completely different intro then, with George Duke singing in a lounge jazz style. Thanks for this Dereck and Chester!
Thank you for sharing this interview, Dereck. What a nice laid-back conversation. I am only familiar with Chester Thompson work thru FZ, but, that is a really great experience. Peace from Central Florida. 😊❤
Such an inspiration; now I know thr secret of his grace and his gentle forgiving nature towards Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks. Hope his physical recovery is smooth.
Thanks so much Dereck and Chester. Absolutely one of my top 3 favorite drummers. And talking about the 2-84 Genesis show was a very fond memory. I’ll have to pull it out again soon and reminisce. Thanks again! ☮️❤️
Dereck, I so enjoyed this conversation. As a fan of Chester throughout the years, the only time I met him was at a Phil Collins solo show, and he was quite kind. During this interview I was smiling and laughing along with the two of you. Of course I loved hearing abut the Zappa years(you know me...). Your interview methods are kind and inviting. I may just watch it again! Cheers.
This is just awesome Dereck!!🎶✊🏻☮️ Chester rules the 🥁🥁.... and you always give the person the time needed to tell what they are trying to express!🙏🏻✨🎶✊🏻
Excellent! You brought us a master of the craft and yet such a humble guy. I can see Baltimore loving him. Progressive music has some deep roots in the Bmore/DC/DMV area.
This is a Amazing Interview Thank you Dereck for doing this interview. Chester Thompson is a Amazing person. I learned a lot about Chester Thompson this interview.
I am very happy to have watched this interview, of one of my favorite musicians. I learned a lot about music and music history. Also happy that Chester is healthy again from the spine disc injury and is looking forward to a healthy new year.
'Rhythm dictates melody, melody dictates harmony'. Thanks, Chester. Wonderful man, who has always been cool and wise in the same measure. I'd love to see Dereck & Chester holding down a groove. What a Rhythm Section that'd be! Great conversation.
We don't really have all the info as to what happened. Anyway that's Phil and Chester's business not ours to say one way or another. Even so if Phil don't that's on him. Chester is moving right along..as he should. Happy for him. Phil never have been full of himself. Let's just let things take care of itself. ❤
I think Chester is on Tony Banks album A Curious Feeling and Steve Hackett In Tokyo, both are very good! Derek breaks out the Fire Merchants first album? My Man! WOW! HAHAHAHA! That album is bombastic! Goodsall signed the second Fire Merchants album I have, but Chester was monstrous on the first album! Also Black Market you brought out by Weather Report, is stellar. I know the sales behind Heavy Weather, but Black Market...Highly inspirational. I met Chester way back in the 80's when he did a clinic in NYC with Larrie Londin (deceased now). Beautiful souls and I was ecstatic to meet these greats. I love how Chester studied composition just like my idols Tony Williams & Jack DeJohnette did. That's a complete musician when you can compose as well. By the way Simpler Times and Approved, Chester's Solo & Trio albums are also worth picking up. Chester is Music Royalty! Derek, next time you arr speaking with Chester, ask him about his faith. I think it will be beneficial for you to hear it. Love & Peace.
I enjoyed the interview. A lot of interesting background stories and especially how spirituality affects music and relationships. Yes, there is a keyboardist also named Chester Thompson. He recorded an album for the Black Jazz record label in the '70s. Those late '70s Zappa albums have material recorded earlier when Chester was still with Zappa.
Dick Grove School without walls, his stepson Dana rasch wrote the curriculum and he is one of the best guitar players on the planet! Right up there with Scott Henderson and Frank gambali! He has a song on UA-cam entitled fan mail from some flounder and he does a version of Lucy in the sky by the Beatles that will blow your mind
You really got the most out of this interview Dereck. I've seen Chester being interviewed elsewhere online, none were as interesting or as enlightening as yours. Cheers!
Awww man fantastic and so glad you focussed on the Alphonso connection at the beginning "Don't know if you familiar with the Black Market album.... get outta here! - Brilliant !
I have a bootleg of that Genesis Omaha show and it's also available on UA-cam. It's great knowing that you were in the audience. That was the first and only time they played Omaha. Phil even mentions it at the beginning of the show. "Good evening Omaha! This is the first time we're playing in your neck of the woods." According to various online sources it was a sold out show with 10000 people at the Civic Auditorium. It's a shame they never came back, although Phil did play there on his solo tour in 2019.
Gracias Dereck y Chester. Abrazos desde Perú

That band with Zappa was Frank's best band. Ruth, George Duke, Napoleon, Tom Fowler and Chester. Unparalleled!
Thanks so much Dereck and Chester. Absolutely one of my top 3 favorite drummers. And talking about the 2-84 Genesis show was a very fond memory. I’ll have to pull it out again soon and reminisce. Thanks again! ☮️❤️

Actually we did talk about faith off camera for awhile and I am not in need of doing anyone else's path.
Wonderful Interview! Thumbs up! Trish

Awww man fantastic and so glad you focussed on the Alphonso connection at the beginning "Don't know if you familiar with the Black Market album.... get outta here! - Brilliant !
Wonderful interview - and weird synchronicity that I have just been digging in to Caleb Quaye and Alphonso Johnson recently!
Very nice person, 360° open..... perhaps I should let him discover some of the music I prepare.... you never know !
Chester! Don't git no better!
I wish You Will talk to Tony Banks!!!😋❤️🖤💛……
How good does Chester look for 75 years of age?
Maybe he shared the same fountain of youth as Steve Hackett?
Excellenț interview….with your simpatico perhaps you two should jam together (imagine that)!!

I might try doing drums first when writing a tune, it might be a way to break out of normal. That's an interesting tip.
Prob Mark Isham
Chester and Dereck are the kind of people you would have as friends
