My brother in 68 rolled over his 65 Corvair . the insurance would not pay for the car so they repaired it at the dealer . Well they welded a roof on it and the rest was Abondo . after 5 years it checkered up , and when you hit a bump and looked in mirror you would see chunks fall off and hit the road and follow you a little ways . Happy New Years Man

Hello Mike - thank you for making these videos, you help so much. I’m 17 years old and bought my first bug, it’s a ‘67!

Great video. Thank you! I tried a diy repair, having no prior experience. (I only watched a couple UA-cam tutorials) The repair looked decent, but after a few months it swelled up and cracked. I’m sure I was using cheap, non flexible filler; possibly polyester primer too. I will try it again using AG47 and urethane primer.

Nice video. We have a 2002 Silverado and we had someone “fix” the rust. We didn’t know but here he just used bondo and it’s starting to separate on the one bedside. The cab corners are starting to look deformed. I wanna fix the rust on my 1992 k1500 bedside but I don’t wanna buy a new bedside so I’m going to try to use rust preventative and good bondo but idk if it’ll last.

Hi! A friend of mine tried to paint a small part of my roof trying various products and different techniques, and it cracked every single time. He said that the body filler never adhiere well to whatever was underneath that panel (we believe that the panel was made of plastic, but we never were entirely sure). Once the paint job starts to crack, will it keep cracking indefinitely? Or will it stop? I'm thinking of wrapping it with vinyl since it's a small part, but I'm not sure if this is a good idea.

Great Video! When you cut out the rust and put in a new patch. Is it necessary to weld the entire perimeter of the patch to avoid the body filler cracking? Or is it okay if I do tack welds 1 inch apart to hold the patch in place, and then put the body filler over?

I would do small tacs around the entire perimeter of the patch panel until it is welded solid. Then grind the welds until they are flush with the surrounding metal and begin your filler repair. Using small tac welds around the perimeter to complete a full weld rather than welding a solid bead in one go will prevent the metal from over heating and warping. If you only use a few tacs to hold the patch in place rather than welding it solid, it could leave room for vibrations between the patch and the original panel which could lead to your filler cracking.

@@Joemauma_ I really appreciate the info. That makes perfect sense about the vibration if I don't seal it completely. I will fully seal it now before applying bondo. Thanks again!

Thanks for the video, i was actually looking for a video on what caused my filler to swell up. ( expand ). It's most likely because the car was being used for work for two years. With only cheap aerosol primer covering the filler. Long story short, i have neighbour's who don't have job's and stop to talk all day while I'm trying to work. My appoliges, just venting about the neighbour's. Enjoyed the video. Very helpful.

Mike, how can I send you a pic of a crack in a hood of my jeep ? I had a dent and had it repaired but the paint faded after 3yrs, So, I took to another body shop and told them I wanted a base coat/clear coat..no one stage crap.
They told me that it had some body filler when sanding the hood and he said they fixed it. I told them story about having if fixed before. The paint job looked great but once again, I noticed these puddle looking blemish in the paint job. Looked like round pool appearance..Took the car back and they repainted the hood again. After a few days, Once again..The pool circles appeared again. I figure that the bondo never finished curing and was gassing.
I got tired of trying to get it right and left it alone. Then, after 11 months.. Boom.. 1 inch crack raised :(
Looking forward to your reply Tony.. Vietnam Vet (I was going to send a PM but UTube shut that down :(
