Professional awning installer here. It is important to locate your brackets on studs closest to where the arms attach to the mounting bar. The arms want to twist that bar when the awning is out and mounting close the arms will prevent undue twisting. On the right side of his awning, those brackets are too far from the arm.
Did you use anything in between the siding and the mounting brackets? I ask because I'm about to mount mine and it seems as if the mounting brackets will crush the siding unless there is a mounting block or something in between.
I install about 200 a year in new England, this is the first video I've ever seen that the installer can't find studs with a studfinder! Probing is the only way. the bracket placement wasn't ideal but sometimes the studs just aren't where you want them. Good how to video overall!
bro ski ....My house is sheeted with wood. My son in law is going to remove a piece of siding to find the studs, even though we have the wood sheeting. Hope it goes well!
No one shows the size of the brackets. My deck is just 8 feet below my roof line. Could I install this awning to my facia? That is what I am trying to find out
nice video, We have a motorized sunsetter awning It is 20 foot. Can you do a video adjusting the pitch? As ours is not pitched straight. it leans on one side. Thank you terry
Video was helpful on the attaching of the brackets paying attention to stud finding needs and making sure about using a level with chalk line. You picked a 10 ft. height attaching for the Sunsetter except you did not give the height of the awning when fully extended. Can it be addjusted if you are not satisfied with the open clearance?
It would seem the brackets would indent the vinyl siding when you tightened them. I didn’t see metal sleeves installed into the holes made in the vinyl siding, how did you prevent this from happening?
Hello dear people. What is the size of the bit drill you are using to drill in to the stud and what is the size of the screw you usde to hold and attach the brackets to the wall . I'm in serious trouble here and I need some help please, thank you.
QQ - how would I determine the proper height of the awning? Does the awning adjust up/down at all? If not do you know how to find out the total extended height at the awning's furthest point? So say I am 10' off the deck at the wall but when fully extended its height is 8.5'.
You install this without showing any of the electrical requirements. Then you show it motoring the extension of the awning. How did you get power to it? Where?
Did you put any spacers between the bracket and the siding? I'm installing one and my siding looks the same as yours, manual says to use spacers though. Thanks for the video.
Hi Bill Installed my retractable awning the other day, (not sunsetter but similar) and looked at your video many times. Mine was 20' and over 200 lbs, very very heavy . Brackets worked good, I also bought 3/4 aluminum spacers to go behind brackets and through siding. I rented a scaffold to install and made it very safe and easy to install. Ladders too unsafe. Your video helped and gave me the confidence to dim. Thanks again.
Hi! My mother has the same problem with sparrows. Google “bird slide”. You can purchase one to install on the rail or build one. I built one out of left over siding. It works great! No more birds in the awning!
Hi, Came across your video on installing the roll out awning. I want to install one over a double door, but i have a gas fireplace exhaust vent (side wall) next to it and above the top of the door 2 feet. If i install the unit how far those it have to be from the exhaust for fire safety? Please let me know Thanks
great video ! gave me confidence to hit this project up ! did you have to run electric out to it for the motor ? battery operated ? appreciate the video !
Best to use aluminum sleeve spacers behind the brackets that go through the wall and sit at the surface of the stud. This will keep the brackets slightly off the vinyl and not crush it. I bet if it's breezy and the awning is moving you can hear the brackets rubbing on the vinyl from inside the house.
I had 2 quotes of $500. Which seems very high in my opinion. I'm putting an 18 footer up today. Once u find 1 stud the rest should be fairly easy to find. They should be 16in a part 24 in. In some homes built in early to mid 19th century
1. Did you seal the holes going into your house with anything? If so what? 2. What was the total time for install? 3. Would you do anything different if you had to do it over again? Thanks in advance, good video!
I used caulk to seal the holes. Total time, about 3 hours. The longest part was finding the studs and making sure the brackets are level. After that, it was a breeze. I would have found the studs first then predrilled the holes before my buddy came over to help.
Nice video Bill, thank you! Quick question, I have a 10' wide awning that came with 2 brackets. When mounting the brackets, do they have to go at complete opposite ends (same distance in) or somewhat on opposite ends as long as they are mounted in the studs?
Sorry guys. I would never mount an awning straight to the vinyl siding. Gust of wind or just windy conditions and those brackets are going to work their way through the vinyl resulting in splitting of the siding and loose lag bolts. I would put up a 2x6 or 2x8 header first and then mount the brackets to it. I would remove the siding where the header goes first and then mount the board directly to the wall and studs, replacing the siding around it afterwards with a drip flashing on top and caulk it up. A lot more work, but very secure. Still like you videos...just my opinion on this one. Just saw reviews on another quicker option I haven’t tried....a product called “Siding Savers”. You can Google or see it on UA-cam. Says it can be used to mount a deck facia to vinyl so this may be a whole lot safer and simpler.
That was going to be my first question...how do you keep the brackets from mashing the siding flat and screwing up the looks and the performance of the siding itself? Thanks for the solution
Hi Bill, what determined where you put the brackets. I noticed some were 32" apart and the 2 in the middle were right on top of each other? next question, how high off the deck to maintain a height of about 7' when fully open? and how did those brackets, not crush the siding when impacted in?, Thx, great video

Glad I could help! I haven't heard of anyone doing that. Is Costco the only store to buy the sun setter?

What dose the siding do when you mount a flat bracket to it?
The siding actually "flattened" as it was tightened. The brackets do have notches to accommodate for the siding, but not the best
