  • Built in 1935 and long respected as a symbol of Latvia’s independence, Freedom Monument in Riga has seen the country’s occupation by both the Soviets and the Nazis and Latvia’s subsequent liberation.
Standing more than 40 metres tall, with a woman, affectionately known as Milda, on top holding three stars, the monument is to this day, the centrepiece of many Latvian political and cultural events.

He lived in USA until early 90s, he's a child of people who escaped Soviets after WW2. Now though he has been in Latvia for more than 20 years, so maybe that's why he now has a slight Latvian accent or maybe he always had it even living in the States

For those wondering what's written on it,it's ''For Fatherland and Freedom/Liberty'' the word Brīvība can translate as both freedom and liberty, not sure what's the indicator as to which one of the words is appropriately used when translated to English.

    • @ivario

I think that usually "Tēvzemei un Brīvībai" has been translated as "For Fatherland and Freedom", but I guess that both are equally acceptable

    Awesome history. Awesome monument.
I, first saw the Freedom Statue in Riga in1992.
It is amazing that the Soviets, Latvian Communists did not destroy it. In Estonia the Communists, removed and or destroyed all major monuments of the Republic of Estonia.

There were plans to demolish the Communists, Vera Mukhina teacher monument to the artistic value

      +Briedis V:
Wow that was a heroic action on that teacher. A salute the teacher, He/She should be Honored for a heroic deed in saving the famed Freedom Monument, way to go!
In Estonia, the Estonian Communists saved the pre war Estonian Navy submarine Lembit from bring destroyed ;scraped. It became part of the Estonian Maritime museum, under the control of the Soviet Navy.
On 27 April.1992 it was again saved when the Soviet Navy tried to sail away to St Petersburg, it was stopped and retaken saved by the Estonian Defense League. This was a Honor of revenge for 1940 to take it back from the Soviets and save it, reclaim it for the Estonian nation in our Navy as Ship nr.1.

@@MrKaido93 Mukhina wasn't a teacher, she was a renowned Soviet architect and a friend of Kārlis Zāle. The story of her saving the monument hasn't been proved conclusively, though.

Her name is "Freedom" and by the name Milda she was called by people who made fun of her during 1920 and by proxy they made fun of Latvia and its independence. So please be more respectful to my countries symbol!
If you can read latvian, read this, it explains it more thoroughly:
