🇮🇸 Iceland: NATO’s eye in the north 🧭

Iceland is a founding member of NATO, yet maintains no standing army. Aside from the police force, Iceland’s only armed government entities are its coast guard and its crisis response unit, or ICRU, both of which have contributed to NATO exercises at home and abroad, notably in Afghanistan.
Iceland maintains an airbase, managed and run by the Icelandic Coast Guard, which provides support for NATO air surveillance and policing missions in the area.

I was with USAF in Iceland from Feb 1957-Aug 1958. I volunteered and i got it. Great place I hate heat and never saw it above 72 degrees. Had a good time Got in playing in a band on base for a few months.........6 nights a week. Damn that almost wore me out. I do miss the place. To me it was the best duty.

Ww2 germany slammed sea mines across the ocean to block European navys and american navys. Iceland was one of those countries to have alot of mines in their area.
