- GYORGY CZIFFRA GIVES AN INCANDESCENT PERFORMANCE OF RAVEL'S JEUX D'EAU, A POETIC ACCOUNT OF CHOPIN'S NOCTURNE IN F SHARP MAJOR OP. 15 NO. 2 AND A DAZZLING PERFORMANCE OF LISZT'S LA CAMPANELLA.
One of the best piano players ever.
This video really shows that Cziffra wasn't "just the technic" as many critics classified him at the time ....true emotion in this nocturne !!!
I had the same thoughts after hearing it. Truly a special recording of it, and hard proof Cziffra wasn't a virtuosaic robot.
absolutely not! Cziffra was a TRUE natural talent...with all the qualities at highest level..the technical virtuousity was that of the rare talents (i don t mean "prodigies" out of having the right teachers...atmosphere...opportunities..usually family connections) ...but NATURAL technical facility...musicality..originality and perception thinking LIKE a composer who happens to play the instrument virtuousically..almost like a GYPSY with their well-known technical brilliance , ease...improvisatory quality...that is hard to PIN DOWN to 'CATEGORIES"....great pianist...interpreter...musician and artist in the most COMPLETE sense. ...he makes music of the highest quality..as 'SERIOUSLY " as the conservatory professors like......whether in the SALON with drunk people OR the most exacting Concert halls in front of "judgemental pianists"...with CIGAR on his mouth..or a cigarette between fingers and play the heck out of the instrument...and laugh it all off!!
I can't think of a more natural virtuoso than Cziffra. He can almost play in his sleep. RIP x
00:00 Ravel - Jeux d'eau
05:26 Nocturne in F-sharp major, Op. 15, No. 2
09:05 Liszt (d'après Paganini) - La Campanella
Otherworldly talent...Playing from another planet!
wow, power , speed, technique, the sound and charisma . like no one else
Look at his smile at 09:11 ! I think he knew that he was playing a great performance because that smile means everything.
To begin La Campanella with a relaxed smile is quite something!
Look at his smile at nine eleven. well.... xD
+A poor young Sheperd How dare he smile at 911 what a jerk
What an evil performance.
He is in the sky!
To see the hands of such an exceptional pianist like cziffra is a terrific thing and I have to thank piano345 for this upload! I adore how Cziffra played La Campanella:0)
Yes, his performance of La Campanella is wonderful to watch. I'm pleased you enjoyed this upload and hope you will enoy my other uploads too.
Ravel never sounded better. Dream performances. La Campanella leaves everyone else in the shade.
Cziffra's La Campanella is absolutely breathtaking. I only hope to one day reach a tenth of his talent
Jesus christ he plays La Campanella like somebody sped up the tape. I love how it actually sounds like bells
He‘s the Specialiszt!
Cziffra was a unique artist, a beautiful colourist at the piano, his performance of Ravel's Sonatine is unmatched. Thanks for sharing these gems
No one could ever play La Campanella like Cziffra did in a very, very long time. And to me, that is a fact.
I wonder how it is possible to play that fast in 12:09. True legend.
The dreamiest Chopin I have ever heard. Thank you
Indeed, a beautiful performance - Cziffra at his most poetic.
The best rendition I have ever heard- so true.Simply marvellous ly performed from start to finish. An incredible pianist who is deserving if many fans all over the World.
La Campanella! Wonderful! Best versión ever
Not for me ,agreat lack of energy compared with many sooner versions . Too schoolish for him ;)
@@antoinev9733 it does give a kind of dreamy vibe to me
@@antoinev9733 "Cziffra too scoolish"...????? I think you had absolutely something to say but you didn't know exactly what...
@@SELMER1947 ... sometimes too scoolish sometimes almost ... tricky ??
just tired maybe ? ^^^
can't say precisely but in my opinion , and from very very far, some earlier version are on a very higher level .
@@antoinev9733
Do you have concrete examples of pianists with audio samples that can confirm your bold claim?
Real music. Real passion.
I don't know why, but when I hear the first piece I'm transported back into one of Lawrence Alma Tadema paintings.
I imagine watching an everyday scene in ancient Rome or Greece, in the Mediterranean sea.
to me there is something extremley special about cziffras nocturnes, I really wish hed record the entire set since what i could found was just breathtaking
Glad you enjoyed these wonderful performances!
A great artist in a thoroughly inspired mood. I have never heard anyone play better than this. Would love to get the DVD if its available.
I only know his performances of the Hungarian rhapsodies and the grand gallop chromatique, I’m absolutely shocked and amazed by the amount of feeling he plays with. He plays Jeux d’eau like I’ve never heard it, so soft in the beginning and slowely building up but never playing to loud.
Bravo Monsieur Cziffra!!!! I don't why he didn't record or perform more music by Debussy or Ravel. Hid tone in the Ravel was superb.
Yes, I agree. All three pieces so beautifully performed and characterised.
Cziffra's Ravel is incomparable. Nobody else even comes close.
@기기 yes, I have both her live performances of Gaspard de la Nuit
I quite like Eileen Joyce's Jeux d'eau.
For Ravel the use of harsh Steinways is stupid. Yamahas are better.
La Campanella was amazing to watch. Jeux D'eau was very nice.
J'ai eu la chance de le voir et de l'entendre lors d'un concert , j'en garde un souvenir inoubliable . Très grand interprète .
Moi de même ses doigts improvisent et nous redecouvrons l'oeuvre
Incredible. He was amazing. So beautiful.
Wonderful playing. Awesome
Music is beautiful forever
Oh God...fabulous Ravel's jeux d'eau !!! we can hear the water flowing ! The greatest version I've ever heard... and the same for this incredible Campanella !!! In 13:22 Cziffra send all the pianists in the world back to school....
Simply brilliant, almost bringing tears to my eyes.
Thankyou for your response. Yes a unique artist indeed. It was his performance of the Ravel Sonatine and Jeux d' eau that prompted me to learn the works.
Thank you for uploading the greatest Chopin nocturne and play by the greatest pianist Cziffra . Thank you.
Not only a great technician but a fine artist. Compare his interpretations of Lizst particularly where too many modern pianists just bang away.
Yes, the greatest virtuosi always (mostly from the past) vary the dynamics and tonal shading even in flamboyant Etudes and works such as Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsodies.
It's a conscious choice. He holds back the dynamics in big pieces more than the typical virtuoso.
Thanks for sharing this!
How marvelous to hear such sublimely played Chopin in the time of 't h a t ' aberration called a Chopin Competion.....another divinely- inspired Hungariam said, " Competitions are for....horses ".¿....
Sweet jesus!!! a really DAZZLING interpretation of La campanella. Thank you so much for posting it!!
This is undescribably valuable.
his jeux d'eaux is more french than most french pianists. wonder why people now misses Horowitz, Rubinstein, Richter but him. he's really one of a kind. perhaps it has to do with him not traveling to the states often enough
He did not travel to the US after the late 1950s. Also Harold Schonberg did not include Cziffra in his book 'Great Pianists' 1963.
Remember what Volodja Horowitz exclaimed after having listened to Cziffra ...: "I want to be Cziffra!" What a wonderful artist.
Christoph Dölz
I am always curious and wondered whether this is a truth or not, I mean where and when did Horowitz talk about Cziffra, because I can't find any information about that…
As you know, Horowitz retired from the concert platform from 1953 until his amazing come back in 1965. It was during that period that Cziffra's star dazzled and I wonder if it was during that time that Horowitz heard Cziffra play.
piano345
Yeah probably during that time ! I really wish they had met each other and talked about piano virtuosity together 😊
Wow! He really included my favorite pieces :P And plays them so so well.
this was glorious... the cinematography... the audio... and OF COURSE... the SPECTACULAR playing...!!! which goes way beyond words...
Fantastic ! TY so much !
This deserves a standing ovation! Why didn't they get moved by his performance?
It must have been a special occasion where they know they shouldn't cheer.
La Campanella at 9:05 is simply perfect.
Wowwwwwwwww The Greatest of All Time!
Splendid and absolutely Unique !
Wonderful!!!
A very unique take on La Campanella. Very very interesting!
Amazing. I just wish i could get a proper glimpse at how Cziffra played some of these trills. I'm currently in the process of learning La Campanella, and any insight into the technical details is priceless to me
maravilloso!!!
Absolutely, dear Marcel, Richter was an artist of Soviet propaganda during the Cold War and the DGG and critics have wanted us to believe that this was the greatest pianist in the world! Fortunately we did not grow! György thank you God is showing us with this shocking Nocturne Chopin sensitive nature of his great poet and so human.
the only thing poor about this performance is the applause at the end, I mean I would be like BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful!
Great production ♫♪☺
La Campanella wonderful ,great artist
Le ravel est superbe aussi😁
God bless his soul
He is wonderful the "jeux d'eau" 😌
Yes a most amazing artist!
The King
Great sound, considering the age of the recording!
Very true - playing the piano was second nature to him.
That bass is beautifully watery, the treble a true campanella, the mid-range perfect for chopin, and the pianist a god
Unbeatable! He's the best.
legendary interpretation of a legendary piece by a legendary pianist
He s so underrated.
Only by those whose idea of great piano playing is performing the slow movement of Opus 106 or Opus 111 as if attending a funeral.
Best pianist in the world!!!
Oh yes, Vladimir
Premier concert aux champs Élysées
J'y étais trois quart d'heure de rappel!
Impressionnant
Thankyou for your comment. Yes, very special indeed!
The Ravel is lovely.
for play Liszt György Cziffra is the best .
Le meilleur
His embellishments...as if La Campanellla wasn't difficult enough already.
Magnificent!!
Where can I found the words to write about his greatest level . Thank you. My lovely Cziffra forever.
The Left hand jumps in the climax of La Campanella are highly refined and crystal clear.
Совершенно неповторимое исполнение . 👏 Браво!
Inarrivabile!
Ohhh ⚘🎵💘🎶
I still regret that I was't allowed to be on his recital ...
The best Ravel with Michelangeli's one, and for Liszt, Cziffra is alone above everybody for ever...
11:27 - 11:37 I like how he continues the trill with his right hand while he continues playing with his left
killy731 that’s part of the piece
La perfezione
Che cavallo!
Un ange
His tr in 11.10 is played with two hands, whereas Cziffra could play it with two fingers.
Personally, I don't believe in 'better' or 'worse' but 'different.' Our responses to different artists is highly subjective.
Exactly, Rubinstein agrees and I do too.
so Cziffra was not better than me at playing the piano after all, he was just different... yay what a relief!
jeux d'eau was amazing!!! not even nearly as "watery" as Argerich's version but i nonetheless find it superb!
Many thanks for sharing- Any idea where is possible to find the entire record?
Ooow how I whiched Cziffra had played Prokofiev.
Thanks Marcel for your comments. I have to agree about Richter's playing. His playing is very straight with no personality or individuality - not to my taste. To the other pianists you mention I would add Cherkassky and a few others.
One of the best la campanella performances. I recommend kazune shimizu performance too.

와 조땐다 ㄹㅇ..
GGODD!!!!!!
Love that this appears to be filmed in some dodgy nightclub!
Only the French could do this!
Cziffra or Lisitsa? 🎹
Cziffra for sure!
Oh god, that high D-sharp is like the worst key that could possibly be out of tune for La Campanella
I think there are much more important things here than out of tune D sharps.
piano345 yep there is
+piano345 + I agree, nit pickers.
