Congratulations!!! From someone who is about to finish their first internship I can say I was really nervous but don't be afraid to dive right in and ask as many questions as you can! I was a Rhino focused designer but because I asked and was curious enough i got to use so many other programs I was way too intimidated to use!

Congratulations . One thing I would like to emphasis as someone who has been working since third year of school . 2 page portfolios, often we see that applications want 3mb or less. A 2 page portfolio of your strongest work and great resume can be the entry into most jobs . 90% of my interviews where only using a two page portfolio. Then I would bring copies of full portfolio for them to keep . Architects like physical tangible things. In these era of digital it will make people stand out .

    • @SurvivingArchitecture

I have heard of the 2-page portfolio and I am planning to do a video on that as well as comparing both methods. Thank you for watching and commenting.

This video is amazing... Congratulations on getting your new job.. The portfolio is amazing. The contextual aspect of the drawings is what really makes you feel the passion and inspiration. You are so talented. I am sure that this employer is delighted to see what you have in store for their projects. :) I just love the hand sketches. Yes... please do videos on this.. I am sure that your audience will also be intrigued as I am in seeing more of your work. Thanks for the comprehensive list of the products that you use.. This is great to see and to purchase because you can see firsthand what they can do in action. One thing that I did not see on the list was the video editing software. Since your videos are done extremely well it is a great testament to your mastery of the software. Having that link will also generate your subscribers to purchase this software. Once again, thanks for sharing such a comprehensive video. Excellent Job!!!

    • @SurvivingArchitecture

Thank you very much. I sure will do more videos on hand sketching. When you do a CV and Resume you only put things that you think will help you get a job to that firm. This is why you should be changing your CV to fit each firm as they all have different views on designing. This is why I have not added it in my CV. I have my channel in the portfolio and when I explain over my portfolio I will be explaining in more detail the experience I gained from going UA-cam. Thank you for watching and commenting :)

I'm also applying for internships and this helped quite a bit on the portfolio.
One thing I didn't understand, though. If the "hangar project" is your strongest one, why not having it as your opening project on the portfolio? Sometimes the employers don't see it all. So the first one is all you've got.

    • @SurvivingArchitecture

    Well done for the portfolio!
I am going to leave my own experience of creating a square portfolio. I did the exact portfolio size (300x300), however, I find it a little bit expensive to print as a booklet. I am paying the price of A2 for a 300x300 portfolio.
Most of the printing shop will try their best to print it for you. If you are unlucky, they won't want to help and you'll need to find another shop or redo with international paper size. A square is not an international paper size, so they will have to cut it into a square for you. You don't want this to happen when you are short of time (submission, interview, etc)
I prefer InDesign when compiling a portfolio. It's very easy and efficient and booklet-friendly.
If you are planning to reuse a square portfolio to apply to MArch programs, you'll probably end up making a new one. Because the school mostly will ask for an A4 portrait/landscape.
Lastly, it is true that a basic square is the easiest to layout. I love to do square too lol
I hope someone will find this useful when deciding on the size :D

@@SurvivingArchitecture thanks for the heart ❤️. Affinity interface is not too different from Adobe's it's gonna take you less then a week to learn everything, Affinity also understands Adobe file formats so you don't loose anything. I think it is worth switching if you do a lot of printable design, you should watch their 1.7 presentation(or just the part where they show how the apps link), it might just be enough to make you change your mind

Hey everyone, I’m currently trying to find out how one could make the lives of architects a lot easier and it fits the topic of this video about getting a job. Which is why I have two very simple questions:
    1. As architect trying to find your dream job, what are the 2 biggest issues you’re dealing with?
    2. Regarding finding a job as an architect, what would you wish for more than anything else?
What do you think? Thanks so much in advance - looking forward to reading your answers!

I use most of the Adobe Suite like PHS, Id, il, and I also use Revit for a base render. For 2D I use AutoCad and Revit. Thank you for watching :)

@@SurvivingArchitecture do you not use sketchup as a major software?

    • @SurvivingArchitecture
      @SurvivingArchitecture  5 років тому +1

To be honest, I hate SketchUp. I know some people can use it and build amazing 3D models however its not for me. I would much rather use Revit, build my 3D Model and that way get all my orthographic drawings, shadows, diagrams which are accurate than use Sketchup. I do however use Sketchup to test out design models or import my Revit model in there to do landscaping and then finally V-ray. Hope that helps!

The good news is that you are young enough to switch majors to pre-med or pre-law and not miss the time too much. The bad news is that you're good enough at the college architecture game that you probably won't. Good luck. You're gonna need it :-)

@@SurvivingArchitecture That's what I thought in 1980 but it isn't true. 100 hour weeks were the norm for me the first 5 years. First one in and the last one out. I was proud of that. All night? No problem! The savings and loan crash happened in 1986. You couldn't buy a job anywhere in the country no matter how good you were or where you went to school. Harvard, Yale, Stanford, didn't matter. The truth of the matter is, if you intend to rely on architecture for your livelihood, you will certainly be disappointed in the long term. It's a cyclical "feast and famine" profession at best. On the other hand, there are always sick people and people in trouble with the law so doc's and lawyers fare much better in lifetime income. If you have family money you can spend millions to capitalize a "firm" of your own, but even then, you will be better off treating architecture as hobby. Ok, I know what you're thinking: your hero lady/gentleman architect started with nothing and look where they are today... I know for a fact that it's all PR, designed to craft an image to attract the next client and young interns who will pay them for the opportunity to work 100 hour weeks making models and doing drawings for their designs...It's not real. And please, by all means, don't give up your God or your family for Architecture. This is the most tragic thing today and I see it all the time. I am not kidding when I say that a career change now will not hurt you, may even help you in the long term. Nice portfolio though. Good luck grasshopper :-)

I understand what you mean and I know it's not looking good out there for young architecture students. But, with the support I've been getting from different organizations, I know it will be different for me. and I am not planning on having architecture as my sole income. I do have other business ideas to keep me going. Thank you for the comment though I appreciate it. But as Les Brown would say 'It's not over until I win'!

No you do not have to you can always say that you can possibly bring a copy of the original or what you can do is add a graphic scale if you really want to. Thank you for watching and commenting.
