    Great video and thank you for spending time to create such a solution. I hope Comandante double down on addressing this issue as it is a frustration that shouldn't exist for such a premium product.

    What a great concept, that i also wish Comandante had tried to incorporate something like this from factory. Thank you for putting in the time to work on this.
    Perhaps a suitably sized metal washer (the thing that goes with nuts and bolts), or metal shim could very simply have the numbers/markers laser printed on them for this purpose, which would likely not be affected by fines getting stuck in any grooves.
    Regarding the height marker to count number of rotations, I think it is a redundant problem, as I believe the real issue with the Comandante is how quickly you can set the grinder, as there is no easy visual reference from factory, and you have to rely on listening to the individual clicks. Once you have installed your individual setting markers, you should already be familiar with the rotations based on the height of the burrs at a glance, or simply remembering what rotation you are on. Because if you zero the grinder, for example, you can turn it quickly to setting "27" by rotating the knob twice, +2, and checking you are on marker 27 visually, and adjusting if you need to.

    Great effort. However, I can tell exactly what click I am on just by looking at the dial and the burr in my C40 without any changes to the grinder. Simply zero out the grinder then use one of the three “gear” symbols on the dial as a reference and know on what letter on the burr it is at when the grinder is at zero. In my grinder, my zero is when the biggest gear symbol on the dial is pointing at the letter “O” in the word NITRO on the burr. You can easily till on which rotation you are at by seeing how far the burr is raised.

    The issue with this might be, that once you clean the grinder (should be done every 2 weeks or once a month if you use the grinder just over weekends), you need to reposition the ring completely. Or not?

    I never understood the issue with the clicks. Your clicks will align with the printed letters underneath, just make a mental note. For example; the 'N' in nitro blade corresponds to settings 8 or 20 on my c40. That's a great jump-off point for espresso or pour-over.

    I think the only thing that matter is just the little stickers on the click and the inner burr.

    back to the real 0 or a true zero, don't you think this is right from the manufacturer suggestion for the first movement of the handle to be number one, OR, both inner and outer should NOT touching when you freely turn to be CLICK ONE, my concern is that, it is no use when both burrs are touching when you grind, keep zeroing also harm both burrs or this set of burr, really hard to define what is right or wrong??? regular thread and red clix also make a big different for each click… what do you think? Thanks for all the hard work, I dont mean to confuse everyone but this is my wonder

    By learning how much you need to rotate in order to move 5 clicks, it's easy to set up in seconds, though: 23 = 5+5+5+5+3 and so on. This method looks too tedious to me.

    Have you considered this for the Red Clix shaft?

    • @quazster
      @quazster  2 роки тому +1

      Yes I have, the pitch is half (0.375mm/revolution) of the original so I have my doubts if you can really see/feel the rotation you are on. Have not tested though so might work? Also you would need quite a bit more numbers so space might be an issue.

      @@quazster It was an updated version posted a month after yours on the Open source 3d printer public library that mentioned in the notes to your video. I am telling Comadante now that they should find a way to integrate a solution like yours into their grinder. They wanted me to email them your youtube video so they could check out your solution. I am urgeing them to move a number system to the top of the grinder in their next version.

    How do you ensure the burr stays in the same position when you remove it for cleaning. The white mark most likely will not go back to the 0 position - you have 1 out of 6 chances.

    • @quazster
      @quazster  2 роки тому +1

      Good point! I would suggest using black marker to mark one flat on the center axle and make a small mark also to the inner burr next to the axle mark. Now when re-installing you can see which of the 6 positions is the correct one.
      Edit: optionally tape the handle to the grinder frame in a way that your outer ring and inner burr zero align and use this when re-assembling. This could make the cleaning a bit more difficult depending on your routine though.

    Hi Thomas. Just saw this again. I didn't realize it was the same video we chatted about. I was curiou how else it might ever be possible to improve the Comandante!

      I confess I've toyed with solutions in this general direction. You should win an award for following through.
      Maybe there's a way to laminate the entire ring before attaching it. or some spray on compound such as the water proof treatment some runners spray on their shoes.
      Or even simple clear contact paper. the goal being to cover any nook, cranny, crack or crevasse that might attract grounds.
