@@gissefelton2465 nope his attempt at Jnats was downgraded because it was too under-rotated. So he has the first certification (from the OG) but the 4A won't be ratified until it's landed, fully rotated and I believe (but not 100% sure) has a positive GOE from the judges
Edited to add that "certification" might not be an official term but Yuzu does have (as far as I can find) the best ever 4A attempt (not downgraded and done in international competition). Still not super close to ratification yet though which is the standard that has been used for the first person to do xyz jump historically.

Yuzuru has been saying he wanted to land this jump for years and everyone said he was insane for attempting. Now people are trying to hop on and also attempt the jump after seeing him try to land it at Olympics and seeing how close he was, and while it’s fine and dandy if they can do it, it still leaves a sort of sour taste in my mouth. I’m hoping that Yuzuru lands it first and it’s ratified. Before he got his last 2(?) injuries he was insanely close to landing it(and sent ghislain a video of him landing it but it wasn’t perfect I think?) so I believe in him but even if he can’t land it I will support him forever, he is the only reason I still watch figure skating.

Yuzu has already made the history of figure skating. He is the pioneer of the 4A jump and has made it known to the world. His coach posted a video right after the Beijing Olympics showing he had already landed it successfully in 2019 with a safety harness during his practice in Canada. It's for sure many skaters and coaches would study this video in detail after that. Therefore, it's not surprising that other skater(s) will try to land the 4A since they now have a blueprint to study it. Ilia is an American and if he can land it, ISU may significantly increase its BV to make him win at 2026 Olympics. But who will be the first skater to have a 4A ratified by ISU in the competition? Only God knows… but even if Yuzu is not the first skater to land the ratified 4A, his hard work, dedication and sacrifices to this jump will always be remembered. He is still a living legend.

There are many skaters who have posted videos of landing lots of jumps in practice but they still dared not include in their program in competition for many years. Probably because out of about 50 jumps they tried, only got one that looked good enough to post on social media. Its risk is very high. Unless you have a high percentage of success, like Yuzu, he dares to add 4A to the competition. As for Ilia, he hasn't achieved much either, if he included 4A in his competition now, it would reduce his chances of getting a medal. So I think even though he has landed 4A in practice right now, it's still going to be a long time before we see Ilia's 4A in competition.

    • @Unfiltered494

this is the first time we've ever seen someone land a legitimate 4A - in practice or otherwise - so it definitely deserves to be celebrated and not as "just another practice jump". Come on. If Yuzu posted one like this y'all would go bonkers about it, but since it's someone else, it's like "meh, it's just in practice". You Hanyu fans need more objectivity and perspective. I am 100% certain Ilia is going to land one in competition at some point.
Also, Yuzu didn't have a high percentage of success. He literally said that the one in Beijing was the best one he's ever done and it was still UR and with a fall. He didn't add it because he had a high percentage of success, but because he hoped adrenaline would help him do it even though he'd never done it before.

I hope one other idea proposed by Yuzuru can be push thru too - in Yuzuru's graduation thesis, it mentioned incorporate AI into the figure skating scoring system. As far as I understand, AI assisted scoring system may catch the pre-rotation issues - may be it can catch under rotation issues as well? Pre-rotation is a serious issue now since almost every skater just pretty much focus on jumps, especially quads to boots the scores. I heard ISU is testing the AI scoring system now. But I am not sure if AI scoring system would be official sometime soon. Besides pre-rotate/under-rotate, what other things AI may help? Someone said there are too many 2 feet skating between some skaters jumps - should too much 2 feet skating being restricted and caught by AI? The other candidate I can think of is: the long preparation time before the jumps - it happened to some of the skaters. I hope AI can help one day to fixed the unbalanced artistic/technical elements in a program. I think it's artistic elements that makes the figure skating more creative/unique and bring figure skating to a LIFE, heartfelt program. It's different from jump culture - everybody just want to do something quick and dirty, not even want to use one's owning thinking . I am tired of watching those "randomly filled step sequences" between jumps, including those "chicken-wing dance" and crossovers, program without "depth". I am very impressed by Yuzuru/Yagudin/Plushenko's step sequence/choreography in their program (Olympic Channel posted a video - Men's Singles Figure Skating Last 5 Champions!"), but now it's all ruined by the younger generation. Those classic skating skills might gone permanently after Yuzuru retired. How bad! It's OK even if IIia landed first 4A in a competition - but I won't feel excited for that. It's not his idea and there might be other even younger skaters overtake him and do even fancier jump! Meanwhile, look at Yuruzu's SEIMEI fs program video in 2018 Winter Olympic (posted by Olympic Channel 4 years ago) - it's reaching 27 M viewers now! Why it's so influential? Because it's unique! Besides it's choreography, It tells a story, it has special messages/meanings trying to deliver. It's not a copy and clown program people watch it one day and go away to look another circus!

If AI is going to analyze jumping... So many skaters are going to be dinged for pre-rotations, under-rotations, wrong edges it will be a blood bath and I'm here for it. Judging has so many things that are up to interpretation, it'd be nice for something to be impartial. I have no doubt that AI can be programed analyze all those things for a jump. They have AI dogs at Harvard that I'm sure will kill their masters in a couple of years.

Even if Yuzu gives up on it, it certainly won’t be because Ilia landed it. Let’s cheer other skaters on, the sport is continuously evolving and that’s really good.

Ilia's 4A really confused me - someone who is figure skating expert may correct me: look at 1:14 - when Ilia did 3A. His left feet has not took off yet. His right leg already stretched high/ready to kick off the turn. It looked to me: his right leg trigger the turn. Look at how Yuzuru did his 3A: ua-cam.com/video/lwoSl-brP4Q/v-deo.html. 7:13 his left feet ready to take off. Look at his right leg - it's not very high. By definition - Axel jump suppose to take off left forward edge. When take off, one's right leg would not able to lift up/kick off high, right? In Yuzuru's case, his left feet/leg trigger the turn - his right leg/hip turn AFTER he took off. Another look at ua-cam.com/video/lwoSl-brP4Q/v-deo.html 6:57 - his right left/hip able to get higher AFTER he took off his left leg feet. Look at Nathan Chen's 3A - ua-cam.com/video/ENijXhYsGmk/v-deo.html 4:44. He was never able to lift his right leg/hip too high AFTER he took off his left leg. May be that's why Ilia may jump high for his rotation.

Hanyu did not jump 4A at the Beijing Olympics to make a name for himself in history.
An interviewer who has been interviewing Hanyu for more than 10 years asked Hanyu after the Pyeongchang Olympics (what motivates him next?) In front of the camera. It doesn't make sense to skate anymore because it came true, and I'm not fit for the next Beijing Olympics, thinking about retirement). However, as a result of his worries, Hanyu realized that he had the last dream of his skating life. It's 4A, which was Hanyu's dream of 9 years old. He said (I want to make my childhood dreams come true because I don't have to be the first one, and I want to be told that I'm good at skating at that time). That was his last wish.
And the day before the Beijing Olympics FS, his right leg injury that he had had for a long time in 4A practice got worse. He said that he had the performances and expressions he wanted to show at the Beijing Olympics until he hit painkillers and injections on the day of the FS, and he participated in the severe foot pain that ordinary athletes would miss.

People: this is an athletic competition. It's not a lifetime achievement award. Whoever can successfully land a quad axel in competition "deserves" to get the credit for it.
It has nothing to do with their other contributions to the sport or their character (comments on Ilia's alleged egotism are irrelevant and mean-spirited).
Yuzuru Hanyu is a two-time Olympic champion, a two-time world champion, a four-time Grand Prix Final gold medalist. Nobody can take those achievements away from him. He will forever be remembered as one of the all-time great male figure skaters, an artist as well as an athlete.

He has researched the jump for many years, and he has always said he wanted to jump his 4A, meaning well incorporated into the choreography, and with his usual great quality, with height, distance, interesting entry without telegraphing. It is always easy to follow someone who has already made great attempts, because it makes everyone believe it is possible to go for a monster like 4A. And there are many videos, footages from which skaters can learn from if they want to try a new jump.
Ilia obviously has great talent but now he relies on fast rotation, there isn't that great height or any distance of the jump. The quality of video is very bad, so it is not possible to say it was rotated either (I think because of the lack of height it's probably underrotated. Definitely not fully rotated). People get excited but they shouldn't forget it is only a practice while it is completely different to try it at a competition. Ilia practices quad-quad combos that look quite easy, while he still struggles with solo quads at competitions. The landing of 4A wasn't good so he is way way far away from landing it a competition cleanly. Besides, I guess he still grows. His legs look long and he will definitely be bigger than, say, Nathan Chen. He will grow and he will loose rotational speed. Injuries may come, too.
It was a good attempt but people need to chill a bit.

Are you blind? The height of this jump is really impressive and it's definitely fully rotated. I wish people would stop downplaying other skaters' achievements to make Yuzuru look better. Yes, it's "just" in practice, but it's also the first time we've actually seen a legitimate 4A, so obviously people are going to be excited about it.

@@Unfiltered494 Stop making personal attacks. This 4A attempt doesn't have great height and has zero distance. You have also no evidence that it is fully rotated. Anyone who says this is rotated while the footage has such low quality can't be taken seriously. Yuzu's attempt has much more height and distance, I don't even understand the comparison. Ilia relies on rotational speed, this is all.

Happy to finally have a footage of a landed 4A. Honestly I don't think Ilia will attempt it in the next season as the jump is too risky and low value. I'd think he would prioritize other quads with higher consistency to win major title first. Good thing is, Hanyu now has a clear visual image on a 4A to study. Perhaps Hanyu may land it in the next season!?! **Trying to look at bright side :)

I am not an expert: the Axel jump he did is somewhat different from what I known of. Probably it's better to get a video took from different angle (from the front instead of back). It's not clear to me his left foot and right foot relative position when he took off. There should be a forward movement on his left foot (Axel).
