Getting into FOSS, I actually came to do things on computers that I had never done before. So I don't miss the proprietary software that I never used anyway. So much of the stuff on Windows would say FREE (as in no price), but it was time after time trial disableware.

Except.. when you really need something to work well, and we're talking programs for dedicated things like script writing, audio processing, manipulating photos, and so on, the commercial products simply work better. Often many levels better. I do music production on the side as well as composition and the tools available are.. they work I guess, but when time is money and conversely, money is time, you spend the money to get the real thing to get out of the studio that 10 minutes faster and get on with your life.

Funnily enough, the Intel ARC card I use is probably the most "free" modern GPU driver, with a FOSS driver and minimal set of blobs we know the rough functionality of. It also incidentally meshes perfectly with the Vulkan heavy GNU/Linux ecosystem, so I'd highly recommend them for those who need a GPU with 99.9% free drivers.

11:20 - GNU Guix is actually an interesting exception to the rule here, as channels like Nonguix are quite easy to add while still retaining a mostly free system (even, if I understand correctly, being able to choose exactly which blobs are added to the kernel to make it work). I personally find the approach of only allowing what is absolutely necessary in Guix the closest thing to being able to run a fully free system as is currently possible.

FOSS is the best thing to ever happen to me. I've been using computers since the early 1980s and I've seen commercial software devolve into an endless money pit. It used to be you could buy $35 commercial software and it didn't spy on you, didn't have "ready to ship" level bugs requiring endless patches and costly upgrades, and it worked forever. If we could go back to that model, I would gladly support commercial software again. But every single thing I've ever used has priced themselves out of existence in the last 5 years. If I pay $200 for a graphics program, it had better last 20 years. Software should not be as expensive as it is.

I also love free and open source software, but I never have the dillema "when is it right to use proprietary software?" For me, there is no right or wrong here. If a proprietary software fits my needs, great. If there is an open source alternative, great. But I also must say that many proprietary software are much much better than open source software.

I know some people think it's incorrect but i view software freedom as a spectrum or a journey. Just because right now you can't fully switch or use proprietary software here and there doesn't mean you've failed your ambitions. It's the effort that counts and spreading the message to those who are eager to hear it. Even if you're on Windows but like using free alternatives like libreoffice, because you think they can help you out better, that's already great in my view. I'll always prefer free software but it does need to be comparable to the tools which i know can get the job done. Proprietary software meets a lot of very useful use cases but it can also screw you over any time any day so it's a balancing act.

The biggest problem with FOSS is that it's hard to monetize, like you can't make money on something you give out for free. Donations and support have worked in certain cases but don't work for every project and just aren't comparable to packaging a product and selling it behind a paywall.
I think if this problem is addressed, aka charging money for source code / paying royalties to the original developer to ship out binaries then FOSS could be a drop in replacement for proprietary software.

Paying royalties would inherently go against copyleft and freedom aspects of foss. Paying upfront or asking a subscription for getting that software and as the whole Red Hat situation has shown that even the GPL only requires you to provide access to source code to those customers, so all that is fine, but you don't get to claim royalties if someone else forks that code and releases it for free or as their own product.

Though, while I'm not any sort of professional photo editor/etc, I have become more comfortable and prefer to use GIMP over Photoshop. Started way back when I was a student and I couldn't afford to drop hundreds on a CS license. I also work in IT and avoiding proprietary software there is basically unavoidable. I use what work tells me to. I've tried a couple times when I get to work from home to see how much I can do with my Linux laptop and while I can function, I'm still using a lot of proprietary things and several things would just work better in a native Windows environment. "while I'm not any sort of professional photo editor/etc, I have become more comfortable and prefer to use GIMP over Photoshop"
I think you not being professional is the exact reason why you prefer GIMP. GIMP is good for basic stuff, as long as the projects aren't so demanding when it comes to features you need to achieve them, but once you get to make something more professional GIMP just doesn't suffice.
Graphic tablet support on GIMP is terrible. It has huge problems with input lag, messing up your line shapes.
GIMP doesn't offer non-destructible effects pipeline that is rendered in real time and possible to edit at any later point in time instead of being rasterized into the image.
Last time I checked, it also didn't have support for 3D shapes and effects.
And last, there is just much more 3rd-party resources like brushes, textures, templates that support proprietary editors, but not GIMP.
All those minor problems just pile up, making GIMP not reliable and making it just feel like designed by developers that never did any graphic design or even talked to a graphic designer. And this is a problem that's unique only to GIMP.
Krita is great and really capable when it comes to making art with a tablet, Inkscape while not as feature-packed as Illustrator, Affinity Designer or Corel Draw, it's still very reliable and get all the most important features right. Blender is just a masterpiece among free software. GIMP... is simply bad.
So while I get that there are people who use GIMP, find it useful and even prefer it over Photoshop, the undeniable truth is that GIMP is only sufficient up to a certain point. Beyond that it simply doesn't deliver.
At this time I don't even hope or expect anymore for GIMP to become better. Personally I'd rather see a brand new piece of FOSS for retouching, photo-manipulation and graphical design that matches the PS user profile.

@@NidraxGaming I mean, the thing is that Adobe started and for years was only available on Mac. The design interface and workflow is noticeably better on MacOS as well, than on Windows. Such that almost all of the publishing world uses Mac workstations or similar ( ie - insall MacOS on your PC ). Lightroom for example, simply does magic with photos, and Pagemaker is.. well, you get the idea. It's why I still have a Macbook Pro.
In my case, it's even more critical as it's music editing and publishing software. There is no analog to a tool like VocAlign. Most MIDI software tools are also simply not reasonable to use in a production environment. Yes, we are always looking for a cheaper alternative. Cakewalk is a good example, but plugin support (say for the above tool) is.. kludgy. The interface is also seriously like something out of 1998. lol.

However, the only software I take from nonguix is linux-firmware and the regular, upstream kernel. That's because running old proprietary microcode is strictly worse than running up-to-date proprietary microcode.

Good points. To me, the entire video solidifies the reason for FOSS over proprietary systems. Even with practical, every day uses. With proprietary systems, you simply have no choice BUT to trust the proprietor, who has access and control to all aspects of that system. This is workable until something goes wrong and the proprietor can simply choose to not fix something or, even worse, sell you a "better" solution! Hardware is especially key since free and open source hardware designs(FOSH...?) don't really exist yet. And, if you think about it, if FOSH ever took hold in this society, these tech conglomerates would essentially be dust. Microsoft, Apple, Intel all of them. They have vested financial interests to keep this stuff from spreading.

    as for photoshop replacement...
    It really depends.
gimp SUCKS for text editing, for example, if you want to apply any effect to an text, you have to write the text, then convert it to a mask then apply the effect, wich make it harder to make iterations (trial and error) until you get something nice, that destroy your productivity...
unless you install an plugin for that wich fortunatelly exists.
gimp may be really bad in other things too, im not aware of all the use cases, but davies media design is a proof that its possible, not that it will be possible in any use case, but to be fair not even photoshop is, for example when there are 3D parts involved, we might as well use blender or something.
for some professionals or tasks using gimp may be possible for image manipulation, but in other cases other tools might be the only option (in some cases even gimp may be the only option)
as for drawing instead of photo manipulation i know a LOT of artists that prefer krita over anything, photoshop dont cover all the needs of everyone when it comes to images, not even the entire adobe suite cover.

But since it is nearly impossible to fight against "established institutions", people argue upon the software itself. Only then, we could take inspiration from proprietary software wherever it is necessary to improve the free software.

Nope. The fundamental difference is that free-software is far closer to ethical than 99.999% of non-free software. It isn't an either/or argument. Computers are tools, at the end of the day it's about which tool works the best for you. I have no problem with paying for proprietary software if I find value in it. There will always be cases where the best tool for the job is not the free one.
The thing is... Deciding how valuable a tool is not purely a matter of function but also cost and developer etiquette. Behavior like pushing everything to the cloud, to require a monthly sub for things that used to be local. Planned obsolescence via timer or update schedule. Locking you out of your database files without a current sub. Hiding things under another menu layer to call it a feature, only to return it back again later as, you-guessed-it, another feature! Lots of modern commercial software fails here.
The next thing... Often times a particular software package will take a good deal of time to learn the ins and outs before you become proficient at using it. New features are fine but if you're constantly spending time learning new workflows chasing the latest shiny you're not really leveling up. The commercial developer's goals can often be at odds with the user.
Any of the above can weight the value in favor of open source.
The final thing... There needs to be some way/s to fund open source development that are stupid easy and blatant. (So blatant as to offend the FOSS monks I'm afraid.) Also a reasonably democratic distribution system so open source developers can get more incentive than some accolades in a man page.

In the unfortunate but all too common case otherwise, the game is effectively considered taboo no man's land, owned by nobody, created by somebody who should be repudiated and shamed, and of which everyone should stay away from and forget about. not a place I expected to hear about the vtuber thing TwT it's not always some 40-year-old, it's most likely a 20something-year-old trying something out ; having a mascot (in this case some anime girl, but it could be anything) to represent oneself helps with 'branding' someone's content, such as having some letters be the avatar that represents you. I do admit, when they use voice-changer and it's obvious (like the squeaky and/or highpitch voices), it's kinda suspicious. Some vtubers I watch are guys with anime girl vtuber avatars that don't bother with voice-changer, and I'd trust them more ;w; To think someone who represents themselves as anime girl is worth less than some, let's say 'less-than-average looking person' to not be mean, is not nice. No reason to take them less seriously if they won't show their face, makes no difference to me
anyway, off-topic away, many times I have to use closed-software, I'd love not to, but no one wants to switch even when what they're using gets worse over time; I wish I didn't have to use discord, I don't need most of the fluff it offers, but many-many communities I've noticed use it and no one wants to use anything else.
