I will also define 'low proof' as about 90 proof or under and yeah, I wasn't gunning to make that a thing as I got into this hobby by any means. I bought, drank, and enjoyed almost as many low proofers as I have higher proof bottles now. But over time, I've discovered that there is a limited number of bottles that I outright enjoy under 92 proof. I'm listing them in order of descending enjoyment/score per abv category (I use a spreadsheet; makes it easy to do): 40%: Green Spot, Cragganmore 12, Dewar's 18 43%: Laphroaig 10, Michel Couvreur Peaty Overaged, Glenfarclas 21, Lagavulin 16, Benromach 15, Oban 14, Old Pulteney 12, Edradour, Glen Moray 10 Chardonnay Cask, AnCnoc 12, JW Green label, GlenDronach 12 45%: Frey Ranch Bourbon, Eagle Rare, Evan Williams 1783, WRDO, Balcones Texas Pot Still in my opinion, whiskey just gets more flavorful with more abv (d'uh), but you don't have to go too high either.
Four Roses and Buffalo Trace are two of my favorites, Love 1792, in fact going to do a blind later tonight between 1792 and Buffalo Trace. As for lower proof, I am loving Benchmark Top floor, it just won an 8 bottle blind tournament for me which included WT101 and Old Forester Signature.
My favorite among these is Elijah Craig Small Batch. I think it is criminally underrated and taken for granted. And the price is great. It just appeals to my palate much more than say Buffalo Trace, which I still like. It’s a great list overall.
I would add Tin Cup to the Low Proof List. Love Tin Cup 10 year, it always has a spot on my bar. 14 year if you can get it. Also Maker’s Mark. One that opened the door to bourbon for me. Cheers! 🥃

There was one 80 proof bourbon that stood out from all the others I had this year. That was the small batch bourbon from Lawrenceburg Bourbon Company. A little pricey at $70, but it punches quite a bit above its proof, flavor wise. They're located pretty close to Wild Turkey, so an easy detour for those visiting.
Larceny could have been in there. Too much peanut flavor for my palate. Redwood is solid, but I am unsure if they are distributed widely enough for me to include them in this type of video. This was an interesting thought exercise for me for that very reason. When I first got into bourbon I spent almost no time thinking about proof, now it plays too large of a role in what I pour.
