      Honestly, you joke, but that could be pretty interesting. Imagine something like the NASA Crawler (although much faster) that they used to transport the Space Shuttle... but that's your "tractor" and mobile base. And it's nuclear or plasma reactor powered. And you have to harvest basically the size of Texas worth of just wheat. Just... Wheat. Wheat for as far as the eye can see for what would be an hour's worth of time flying over it in a jet.. And you have to manage harvesting the wheat, separating, sorting, cleaning, packaging, transport and defense of it from dangerous wildlife. All while managing like several hundred servitors like resource collecting units in an RTS or something.

      @@matchesburn That sounds amazing. I'd imagine it would have to be an RTS game given how large the map would have to be, and all the tasks you would have to manage.

    Farmers will commonly rotate crops to allow the soil time to recover from the plants that where just harvested as well. Either leaving them fallow or planting something that puts specific nutrients back into the dirt so the next time you grow your main crop it’s more likely to to be a stable or bumber crop. So it would make sense that they would change crops from time to time to keep the world producing as much as possible.

      Use fertilizers? Ammonia nitrate comes to mind, including all the problems it brings with its massive energy requirements.

    • @michaelkimberling7307
      @michaelkimberling7307 2 роки тому +53

      For a planet sized farm fertilizers would absolutely be required too because you would be taking all or most of your produce off planet removing any possibility of recycled nutrients. However changing crops from time to time would help the soil to recover and allow for some nutrient balancing in the food you’re producing for the meatbags you’re sending it to feed.

    • @LazyLifeIFreak
      @LazyLifeIFreak 2 роки тому +14

      @@michaelkimberling7307 No, you don't need to rotate farms, you just apply fertilizers in the correct amount at the right time of the year so that the nutrients are available for the plants to absorb. The only reason we produce food in the soil is because it acts as a medium in which nutrients can go from the soil, through the ion pump in the roots and into the plant. Plants do not give two-fucks what they actually grow in, only if the growing conditions are met or not.

    • @bobjohnson1633

      If you rotate cows or goats onto farm lands, they'll recover the soil very quickly. Farming plants just kills the planet

    • @RedOblivion7
      @RedOblivion7 2 роки тому +51

      @@LazyLifeIFreak You are correct in that you don't *need* to do it, but practicing organic growing techniques such as crop rotation, animal fertilizer, and so, you can grow a lot more food efficiently and effectively without requiring a higher technology base. It's why we still practice these techniques even in the modern day where we could conceivably feed the whole world in massive hydrophonic plants.

    I'm reminded of the story of Hogfish Bay.
    The way this story was told to me, a guy was in a multiplayer PvE match in the Anno series of strategy games. His allies had all played the game before, but this guy was new to it and hadn't yet figured out the game's One True Build Path, so he was constantly having to correct his town, which usually meant _over_ -correcting - until he noticed that there was a neutral NPC faction nearby that would to buy soap at a constant price. So, he reoriented his entire city to focus on pig farming, to produce exactly two things: soap, and sausages.
    When the other allied players looked over to see how he was doing, they were met with a Dickensian nightmare haze of caustic smoke from the soap factories and screams of dying animals from the endless slaughterhouses that fed them. It was great.

    St John of the Deer: a prehistoric tech priest from a time long predating even the dark age of technology. The tech priest would build a machine that would inspire the STC-pattern single-seat 'Thresher' wheeled harvesting machine.
    We only uncovered the ancient machine that would become the basis for the STC 'Thresher' and came to know of St John of the Deer due to the most blessed of fortunes: during an attack on the south-eastern portion of Merica by an unknown nation during the Age of Strife, the fusing on a 300 megaton airburst nuclear weapon failed, plummeted into the ground, and detonated. It left a huge crater behind. At the bottom of the crater: A pristine example of an ancient harvesting construct, miraculously preserved through tens of thousands of years beneath the earth.
    On the machine the name of its holy builder was inscribed on the side panels.
    Soon after the Horus Heresy, this ancient machine would be rediscovered by the Imperium and this most holy of prehistoric tech priests would be canonized St John of the Deer.

    Hive worlds actually use hydroponics to help feed themselves, as several spires are used as massive hydroponic farms. Now of course most of what’s grown is basically turned into gruel for the hive cities but some upper spire royalty enjoy owning their own personal hydro farm to provide food for themselves. Of course these hydro farms are no where CLOSE to feeding the entire hive city, but they can provide enough most of the time to not let everyone start starving instantly.

The showing of Behind Enemy Lines got messy when Owen Wilson's zoomie character whined about the food on an aircraft carrier. MRE packaging, utensils, food and even a cup of dip spit were thrown at the wall by marines who were sick of the limited food options and considering at that point I was eating the same meal for 7 of my last 9 meals, I joined in the scorn. In Star Wars Legends EU there are planets defined as "Green Worlds", Ork jokes aside, these are worlds that the Republic, Galactic Empire, New Republic, Fell Empire, and Galactic Alliance, actively try to keep from ever being industrialized or the very least not turned into something like Nul Hatta, worlds like Alderaan, Naboo, Dantooine, Ithor before its devastation and after its restoration, Telos IV following its restoration, these worlds produce the most abundant amount of food and medical plants in addition to having the best types of hydroponic gardens, you might have cases of more mundane farms like those near running water, enabling them to use the running water for both powering turbines & supply fresh water the plants granted they are poissbly some thing the size of a small island, while other worlds use something in the form of giant domed hydroponic gardens the size of New York, in addition to having water filters to scrub and remove debris and toxins from entering their worlds oceans, the technological process of the people from Alderaan & Naboo is used on many of these enabling the soil not to be contaminated or other things, these worlds also serve as the main source for acts of terraforming and planetary restoration proncesses in the aftermath of wars and other devastating things,
    I imagine the Imperium also keeps tabs on these sorts of worlds,

    For your hypothetical full agri world where everything has been terraformed, rather than just having the people living on stilts above the growing fields, it would be way cooler if there were massive combi harvesters that were so large that they functioned as cities (like Mortal Engines but actually good) The people living on the harvester work to process the food that has been harvested and the harvester leaves seeds behind it so that a few months the next harvester on the same latitude can harvest it. Then you have a space port on the north or south poll which get shipments flown in from each harvesters to be then shipped off world.

      I want to build an argi world revolving around invasive species. The imperium brought some genetically engineered cattle and fish to a planet. Some of these animals escaped captivity into the wild where they cross breed with the local species and grew to massive sizes much like the feral hogs and snakehead fish in north America. Unlike the captive variants which are culled before they get too big to handle, these feral hogs and fish are only limited in size depending on the available food which is quite plentiful on the planet because it has a massive tropical river delta. They are still edible but due to their size and the feral nature, normal agri workers can't hurt them and they tend to break into holding pens and artificial ponds to steal food. This can be a potential home work for a space marines chapter, a knight house or imperial guard regiment who hunt the oversized crocodilian beasts and fish for food and combat training.

    I was gonna make the point that us Irish proved that peasants can live on almost just potatoes alone, and then I remembered the potato blite that wiped a lot of us out in the 1,800's....incidentally, according to our last census, our population has finally managed to reach the 8 million people that it was, before the 1847 Great Irish Potato Famine.
    Interestingly, if you wanna watch some real life post apocalypse stuff, that'd sort of like a US western outlaw film, "Black 47" is a movie set during that famine in Ireland. It's on Netflix.
    I say post apocalypse, even though it's not the actual biblical apocalypse, but reducing the population from 8 million to I forgot, but a much lower number, in one failed harvest, after a few years on on and off failing harvests, is very Warhammer 40,000, along with interesting or let's just say mixed, ways of dealing with starving peasants.
    To be fair, there where British people in power that did try to help the situation as best as they could.
    Also, only an estimated 1 million actually died of starvation or more so disease that would have been survivable if not for the starvation.
    Most of the population decline was emigration, like to mainland Britain or the New World, like the USA, in "coffin ships", called so because of those ships death rates on the journey to the New World.

      Charles Trevelyan in Britain's civil service at the time pushed hard on insisting that Ireland was starving because its people were lazy and morally bankrupt because they became so dependant on potato farming, and needed social reform. He was an advocate of "non-intervention free market" that saw to it that Ireland was better off starving so it would correct itself.
      It took donations coming from across the world, including Native Americans and even American *slaves* before Britain felt forced to actually do anything, when conditions had already gotten so bad. I don't think it's fair to say they did try to help as best they could.

      @@jondoe5937 Actually the, I think Prime Minister of Britain or a similar position, seeing reports of the famine coming, ordered vast grain supplies from the New World. Unfortunately, he lost his office and was replaced by a man that had that attitude. Also, many individual British people did what they could, like Christian preachers.
      Including the man that invented Binary logic, who was born in England, but excepted a job, teaching at the newly opened University College Cork, which is like a 20 or 30 minutes drive from where I live.
      He did write about how there was nothing that an individual could offord to stop the crisis, but also records showed that the rich locals where more interesting in fancy living them actually helping the starving masses.
      This is not the first time I heard stories about wealthy British landowners in Ireland having a "devil may care" attitude, while being more concerned with making money, like communist leaders when they actually get into power. Like Bernie Sanders 5 houses or BLM leaders multi million dollar houses.

      @alganhar1 2 роки тому +1

      @@jondoe5937 That was not a prevalent attitude however, even among the upper crust and especially not amongst the middle classes who were the voting population.
      Unfortunately despite not being a majority opinion it was concentrated in the worst places, and many powerful individuals in the Government and the Civil Service held similar views.
      Amongst the middle classes especially the response was one of donations in Britain, but the main problem is that those donations were often mismanaged, slow to be transported, and often badly targeted. Aid organisations even today can be guilty of such mistakes, but the ad hoc rabble of largely inexperienced volunteers who were involved in distributing the Aid early in the Famine made them all!
      The problem was that such aid would not be efficiently distributed at that time without Government and Civil Service involvement, and people with those views, whilst a minority, were a POWERFUL minority, and so the involvement of Government took far, far longer than it should have.
      History is almost never black and white, it is almost always a mix of shades of grey. Ascribing those deplorable opinions to Britain as a whole is a mistake, and is an untruth.

    #Arch This may be a dumb question but a funny one.
    Are there "ancient" Terra dishes still served in todays imperium? And what would they be? What is the cuisine like for the Imperiums nobles and more well off citizen's? Has GW ever written about food dishes on paradise worlds where many are better off and have closer access to exotic ingredients for dishes?

    I think our dairy products here in Ireland, are exported as far away as China...for the richer Chinese people. Apparently we just freeze it and ship it over.
    I know when I went to Spain, that they use Irish dairy products because Spain's climate isn't suited anywhere as well as ours is here in Ireland to dairy production. Meanwhile, we import their wine. (Yes, I know, Irish stereotype, importing alcohol while exporting non alcohol, lol.)

    Nixtamalization
    Corn/maize is not a sentence to pellagra.
    Also, don't forget that "better" food is a great way to reward desired behavior. There is a reason why the near infamous "food-loaf" is such a touchy punative treatment in the American penal system. It is a strong incentive to behave within the rules of your living situation.
    There will always ways to grow things anywhere we can live. Especially for the Elite, such high-tech urban farms would produce many luxury items.

    Makes you wonder why the Imperium's enemies bother attacking Hive Worlds when Agri Worlds are much more valuable targets. Destroy your enemy's food supply and all you have to do is wait. And while I have no doubt that the Imperium is aware of this and will defend an Agri World to the best of their ability, there's only so much you can do to fortify a planet when at least 95% of its surface is devoted to food production.

      A lot of the Imperium's enemies don't think in the same tactical way that we think.
      For a Khornate warband slaughtering a hiveworld would be a far more valuable act than attackig a lowly agriworld.
      For a Drukhari raiding party the Hivecity has MUCH more possible slaves so not even a question there , even though smaller parties could decide to play it safer ; their reason wouldn't be your/our current human reasoning.
      Same for the Tyranids except they just eat all the people , yet maybe the crops of an agriworld might be nutritious as well. And even if the Swarms did attack them they would attack them for this reason , not to tactically starve humans.

    Rather than not diversifying food the Imperium doesn't diversify *planets.* The Imperium takes The Planet Of The Hats trope to the extreme to make said planets interdependent. This reduces instances of successful rebellion from single planets - they're either poorly defended, or they'll eventually starve.
    Not that this stops 'let them eat cake' types from trying their luck.

    If keep growing food to ship off world the overall mass of the planet will decrease. Let alone the soil fertility
    Does the ships coming to pickup food bring mountains of poop? Do they clean the hull before loading it again with food?
