    So glad I found your video. I'm planning to pick up an older 2nd hand deeper & tow it behind a canoe to find new fishing spots on my local rivers here in the UK when the fishing season ends.

    I just got one as a gift. Instead of using my phone, I picked up a used Galaxy Tab Active 2 tablet to use with it - it's cheap, waterproof and should last all day (but also has a replaceable battery if one isn't enough). Any "ruggedized" tablet should work. Haven't had a chance to use the combination yet but looking forward to it.

    In all of my years fishing I've never used a sonar. Well, I attempted to once (in a friends boat) and I found them pointless, awkward and heavy for a canoe. But after watching this ... I may have just changed my mind. Thanks for the review and addressing the phone battery question (because that was the one question I had) .. TODAY IS BASS OPENER .. TIGHT LINES BROTHER!

      Being able to understand depth and structure offers a huge advantage, especially if you're often on new water. The Deeper really is a game changer.

  • @ryandesmond6250

    Great overview. I also started with the original deeper in 2016, which I got for BWCA canoe trips. I wanted something portable and rechargeable. I actually just found it again, and came here to see if the new ones were still viable.
    My experience with the Deeper Arm is that it always seemed to move while paddling in waves, and eventually the sonar was no longer in the water. Has that been fixed?

    • @Paddleheads
      @Paddleheads  10 місяців тому +1

      The deeper arm you have, is it the first version or 2.0? The new one has the wave rider which helps keep the Deeper in the water. The arm can get bumped if you're paddling through weeds or something, but I usually pull it up in that situation anyway since a reading in the weeds is not necessary. I've also had that experience if I am traveling exceptionally fast in the canoe, but again that usually happens when I'm travelling, not fishing, so I pull the Deeper up anyway. Thanks for watching!

    i want deeper to make a dedicated portable ice fishing flasher, like to simply get the chirp2 and make it a little bigger with a bigger battery. the fact it has no wires is what makes it awesome. no need to touch it if you hook a monster fish

    • @Paddleheads
      @Paddleheads  6 місяців тому

      Interesting. So just a bigger version with a bigger battery specifically for ice fishing?

    Ive been looking at castable sonar for my paddle board. My main concern is that the flex arm mount won’t work for me. Ild need a screw on or ram mount option

    • @Paddleheads
      @Paddleheads  9 місяців тому

      It would be super cool to mount it to a paddleboard! Is it a rigid board? Is mounting gear tracks an option? If so, my suggestion would be to mount the tracks in the center on the very back of the board so it comes off the back dead center. That way it won't interfere with tracking on the board. If you can't mount anything to it, besides casting, you could tie some heavy braided fishing line to the Deeper and something on the back of the board. Usually I wouldn't recommend this but since a paddleboard doesn't move very fast, it might actually work. Good luck!

    • @katep4485
      @katep4485 9 місяців тому

      @@Paddleheads Its inflatable which really limits my options. I have 3 "actiion camera" mounts, but nothing else. I did see some 3d printed deeper mounts on etsy. I might see if one of my 3d printer friends can help make something for me.

    I have the Deeper pro and chirp 2 so that so I can attest to it's overall functionality. The unit is compact so that it can be used any where like a kayak or even a boat. The supporting apps offer similar versility as the much larger sonar devices. However the product quality is not very good. The pros battery only lasted two years and could not be replaced. The chirp 2 has cracked two covers leaving it useless until I can find a replacement. Have you had any issues?

    • @Paddleheads
      @Paddleheads  Місяць тому

      I have owned the original chirp for almost 5 years now, I used it for 4 years and never had any issues with the battery, it still works great. How did the covers on the chirp2 crack? If they were damaged, you can purchase new covers from Deeper. If there's a manufacturer defect, it may be covered by the warranty and worth reaching out to Deeper. Hope that helps!

    • @patriciasanders6955
      @patriciasanders6955 Місяць тому +1

      @@Paddleheads thanks for responding. I have had it for two year so its out of warranty. The cap on the chirp 2 is extremely hard to screw on and off compared to the pro. I am thinking the rubber seal is probably a little oversized. I am buying a replacement top so I will see what happens this season.

    How do you know where to cast?
    If the screen only shows a flat left to right view how do you know whether to cast to the N,E,S or west of the finder?
    Why does it just show a 100 meter circle so you can tell where the fish are?

    • @Paddleheads
      @Paddleheads  Місяць тому +1

      This is how all traditional fish finders/sonars work. There is a learning curve for how to interpret the information presented on screen, but with practice you can become quite good at understanding what you're looking at and how to apply it. I may just make a video showing how to do just that, thanks for the question!

    • @FreeAmericanSpirit
      @FreeAmericanSpirit Місяць тому +1

      @Paddleheads I understand that's how they display it. Just seem to me, that if a manufacturer wanted to capture the market thed have a split screen one the way it is with all the info.amd the second one showing a radar type screen showing where they are.
      (Yo Garmin, deeper, etc, when ya .
      Make one let me know I'll test it out as a newbie so people will know if it works for us)
      That being said if you would make a video showing how you determine which direction the fish are in...
      I'd really appreciate it.
      Just ordered the chirp.2 from Amazon... hope it's worth it

      @Paddleheads little nervous about it. On amazon it has more features than the deeper pro 2 plus but has a lower star rating. Also it costs less than the other one, so I'm wondering why? Well, it will be here tomorrow, so I'll be on the water with it Friday to see how it does. Don't know how effective it will be in the shallow water that I fish due to how far the cone spreads at that depth...
      I think someone said I can only use the small cone in shallow water because the app senses it and turns off the other size cone options????

    Buy a cheap phone with a waterproof case and keep a battery bank handy. That way even if you drop the phone and lose it, it wasnt your primary phone.
    Honestly though, you could build a display using a Raspberry Pi and a waterproof case. Hmm...maybe ill do that and sell them.

    • @Paddleheads

    • @Paddleheads

  • @puddlebarf
    @puddlebarf 10 місяців тому +1

    Why would it be difficult to rig up on a boat? Could you not just tie some rope or line to it and then tie it to your boat and tow it behind? It'd be similar to tying it on and casting it. Thats what im planning on doing on my float tube at least

    • @Paddleheads
      @Paddleheads  10 місяців тому

      I have tried this in the past - when the boat is in motion the Deeper will move erratically in the water creating a mostly unusable readout of the bottom and a jagged image. The flex arm keeps the Deeper in one position and prevents it from going under water which will affect the connection. A string doesn't do that. When you're casting you have to retrieve relatively slow to get a good read out, much slower than you would want to travel in a boat.

    why would the display have to be supplied by deeper. it would have 10x overhead compared to a random cheap tablet. just use the cheapest tablet and put it in a plastic bag and there you have "a waterproof display that is slightly bigger than a phone and has better battery"

      Oh wow you just gotta have an account with them so there's wifi correct?

    • @Paddleheads

      Nope. The wifi doesn’t connect you to the internet, it only connects you to the deeper. No data required. No cell phone signal required. The wifi is just a way to transmit the information from the deeper to the phone. It’s a stronger connection than Bluetooth.
