    When your done harvesting what do you do with the rest?

    • @TowardGarden

      Once you harvested the main top head, most broccolis will develop side shoots with smaller top heads for second or third harvest. And if you let them go flowering (bolting), you can harvest the seeds. Hope this answers your question and thank you for visiting!

    It's my first time growing broc. I've been successful at all the regular stuff for many years, so this will be interesting! I'm also attempting this in my first winter garden in Maine! 🌲 (zone 5a) Looking at your page, you grow many things I do, so I subbed. We planted the broc seeds, like lettuce, a lot in a seed tray cube, which was a mistake, but we can separate most of them out and take it from there. thanks for the lessons! 😉

This variety does best in forming big top heads, but most broccoli will develop side shoots for second or third harvest (still they will not be as large as the main head). What did you use to keep the pest away?

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  11 місяців тому +3

      Checking your plants regularly and acting as soon as possible is the best pest control. But pest control depends on the type of pests. For example, two of most effective and organic pesticides you can use are B.T. or (Bacillus Thuringiensis) and Spinosad to kill caterpillars and worms. For leaf eating bugs, usually neem oil mix works great. Hope this helps and thank you for visiting!

      I live in SoCal 9b, and from all broccoli varieties I 've grown, this is the best heat tolerant one (Gypsy comes second). It takes awhile to start developing heads, but from emerging to harvest, heads grow very fast which is a big advantage on bolting issue. I had this growing in max 80F and didn't notice any sigh of bolting. If you think it will stay like that for a while, I'd say go for it. Interestingly they grow slow when it is cold, so the heat is an advantage for this variety. Hope this helps. Happy growing and thank you so much for your comment!

    How do you keep the seedlings from becoming leggy? I have tried twice now and they keep coming up long and leggy. Is it the fish fertilizer?

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  Рік тому +2

      Seedlings get leggy 99% due to lack of sufficient light. It is ok to start seeds inside, but as soon as they germinated, you need to take them outside to get 4-6 hrs of morning sunlight. Broccoli is a cool season crop and you can keep seedlings outside if it is not freezing. (only bring them inside at nights if temperature drops below 40F). The other possibility is that maybe you sow seed not deep enough (should be 1/4" to 1/2" deep). For the leggy seedlings, you can keep them and let them grow in full sun and when ready for planting, plant them deep covering part of the stem and they will do just fine. Hope this helps and good luck!

    How do hou stop it from flowering?

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  4 місяці тому

      The main reason for flowering is the hot weather. Where I live (SoCal 9b), the best time to grow broccoli is late in fall or very early in winter, with temperature max at 80°F. And also I select varieties that are very slow in flowering. From all broccoli varieties I've grown, this is the best heat tolerant one ("Gypsy" comes second). So you need to check your cool weather season and choose the correct variety. Hope this helps and thank you for visiting.

    Another question, I forgot to ask you. Why don't you sow the seeds directly in the big pots instead of bothering yourself for transplanting from smaller to bigger one?

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  5 місяців тому +2

      Starting seeds in small pots and in seed mix helps me to better control seed germination and growing conditions for seedlings. It is also easier to control disease effecting seedlings (like damping off). But you can definitely start seeds directly in big pots too. I am just sharing what works best for me but it is totally up to you. Hope this helps and thank you for getting in touch!

    • @omkarsinhrathod6017
      @omkarsinhrathod6017 3 місяці тому +1

      Seed germination is never 100%. Some seed fails to sprout. So sowing them in small containers is economical. What if the seed in big container doesn’t sprout? You wasted 10 days, extra water as the pot was big & space of that big pot as well.

    Wow, I think I am failing my broccoli sprouts.
    It could also be because I’m raising a different breed maybe. But my saplings have small embryonic leaves, but abnormally long stems. The longest being a little over three inches long in fact.
    Do they need more light perhaps? Or am I really that bad at gardening, I somehow screw up broccoli?
    Edit: never mind, after sifting through the comments here, my former argument was correct. They are not getting enough sunlight. I need to start over again anyways, I also planted spinach and they did not even grow to begin with because I forgot to do research prior to sowing them.
