Its so cool that Cynic has gained much respect in recent years. They used to get booed while touring with Cannibal Corpse. They basically went on an indefinite hiatus because the music industry left such a bad taste in their mouths. Now with the evolution of death metal going in more technical and diverse directions, you see countless bands being influenced by Cynic. You could say the same for Gorguts as well. Another amazing influential band that never got their just desserts.
Why are you surprised? Lots of metalheads are just simple minds who don't appreciate anything that doesn''t make your head bang. Especially touring with CC as a jazz-influenced band is a suicide.
They changed it in a way that made it "Gorod" to the point where someone who hasn't heard the original would think they wrote it, but without changing it to the point a cynic fan wouldn't instantly recognize it. I love it!
I was shocked to come across this band mixed in with your standard Death Metal videos. The technicality is INSANE, and the fact that they covered Cynic (a love of mine) makes them even more awesome. THEY SPEW GREATNESS FROM THEIR INSTRUMENTS (and mouth)
just heard this band for the first time. this song they covered is one of my favorite songs of all time. some parts pained me just because it's not the original, but it's not the band's faults. Total respect for this. Time to listen to Gorod's original stuff.
They redeem themselves by making all these new albums, that, although not as great as Focus, are still great albums. Too bad they don't have Gobel anymore.
@@opethian8512 a good amount of the stuff from Focus, particularly the heavier parts bass wise were from Tony before he left for Athiest. All of the intense jazz stuff is Malone
@DemonSlide To me, I prefer covers where the band really makes the song their own-if I wanted to listen to a song that sounds exactly the same, well hell, I'd be listening to Cynic!
It has the subtlety of a wrecking ball made of windchimes. Cynic is the pinnacle of metal because it doesn't have to be heavy to level you. This just deprives the whole song of its atmosphere, although it would be really enjoyable heard in isolation.
I guess every band who does a cover song is entitled to inject their own flavor or style. While I don't like the more "metal" feel added to this version that much (whereas the original one is almost pure jazzy fusion) I still have to say props for having the balls to attempt and musically deliver the execution of this song...
This is better than the original. How can I justify this ostensibly brash statement. Well, metal is the pinnacle of music. If you want to make music as good as it gets, make it metal. Gorod have not only proven this with this song, but have proven that they are at the top of the metal genre. Ergo Gorod are the kings of music.
Nasty-looking Navi you know they made a few more albums since then... nothing as hard hitting as Focus, which I discovered by mistake and it’s what got me into prog death metal.. I used to not like growling at all but cynic just got me over the edge with their music and I learned to embrace the growling. Now I gonna headband to Meshuggah when I see them live for the 3rd time in May \m/
I don't think so. It's not about playing this song better. Both verses are kick ass but Paul and Co. created it. That's the point. And: IMHO Sean's bass solo is the best bass solo in metal ever.
i am all for covers being origional , injected with creativity from the artist, but imo it has to be done in the spirit of the song. this sounds so odd, they could of fiddled with the phrasing but it just sounds like generic tech death now
This can't be as good as the original, because with the distortion beginning almost right away, it loses the impact that the original has when it climaxes. In other words, blowing it's wad too early.
why does everyone keep saying these covers are injecting their own style into the song?! it sounds the same! its not more metal or anything. are any of you paying attention? the only thing that is different is that the mix is better and the guitars are clearer and more forward.

They were ahead of their time.
@@DrClean1 totally agree with you
It's a shame. They had such a profound effect on the metal scene.
My mind is that of the man of this album cover.
They changed it in a way that made it "Gorod" to the point where someone who hasn't heard the original would think they wrote it, but without changing it to the point a cynic fan wouldn't instantly recognize it.
I love it!
great cover, great original
I like how they made it their own cover, it sounds awesome like this
Sounds very different from the original. I loved what you guys did. brilliant.
I was shocked to come across this band mixed in with your standard Death Metal videos. The technicality is INSANE, and the fact that they covered Cynic (a love of mine) makes them even more awesome. THEY SPEW GREATNESS FROM THEIR INSTRUMENTS (and mouth)

I still remember how happy this made me when I first heard it. Two of the best bands right there. Extremely underrated.
The drum track is so sick on this version.
How come this is missing from the album on apple music ? :'[
both bands are great
I love this. They made it a bit more tech death. Really cool.
This is friggin incredible. Gorod is probably one of the few bandsthat could cover a Cynic song this well.
i love this new album and cant wait for a tour through the US
Such a great cover, creative and different, amazing work!
They redeem themselves by making all these new albums, that, although not as great as Focus, are still great albums. Too bad they don't have Gobel anymore.
That is cause the bad ass riffs are from Gobel and Choy.
Dude TiA was so good!!!
@@santiagodobles9843 I thought the bass was Malone (RIP)? TiA The Unknown Guest is the sickest PM riff aside from KOTWK and Humanoid
@@opethian8512 a good amount of the stuff from Focus, particularly the heavier parts bass wise were from Tony before he left for Athiest. All of the intense jazz stuff is Malone
This cover is just perfect.
Haven't heard the others but The Faceless are certainly up there. Looking forward to their new album.
Damn, who ARE you guys! Awesome!
That's a much more digestible version of the track. Great cover!
Just heard this great track on web radio.
@DemonSlide To me, I prefer covers where the band really makes the song their own-if I wanted to listen to a song that sounds exactly the same, well hell, I'd be listening to Cynic!
They took a song by Cynic and made it their own. Love it!
dude, it's a cover, no one will ever do that song as the original one, cynic is cynic, gorod is gorod,
Wow, it is tough to cover Cynic and these guys do a great job!
It has the subtlety of a wrecking ball made of windchimes.
Cynic is the pinnacle of metal because it doesn't have to be heavy to level you. This just deprives the whole song of its atmosphere, although it would be really enjoyable heard in isolation.
Awesome cover, your own interpretation with amounts of respect for the original

Slap mah face and call me nancy this shit is awesome
*slaps*
Nancy
It's just better recorded, but both versions sound great.
great fuckin' cover ... !!!
Personally, I thought it was genius. I like Cynic's better but this was tasteful and appreciated.
Going to be honest, I find the early distortion in the song kinda rubbed me the wrong way but its still good
Cynic makes me want to cry u.u such a beautiful band and only made one album back in the 90's it's like... so sad... I don't know.
Nasty-looking Navi you know they made a few more albums since then... nothing as hard hitting as Focus, which I discovered by mistake and it’s what got me into prog death metal.. this is fucking insane, so killer
1:16 DAMN. :')

On par with the Obsura How could I? cover.
yeah, to me they are all albums.. EPs or not... but yeah, I get your point...
Huh? when I say 5 I mean five MORE Cynic albums...
Currently we have 2 and 2 EP's only.
@DemonSlide Exactly =)
Well yeah, they are great but imagine a world with at least 5 more Cynic albums... Oh dear, it's just painful.
and cynics use of fretless bass sounds quite different
i am all for covers being origional , injected with creativity from the artist, but imo it has to be done in the spirit of the song. this sounds so odd, they could of fiddled with the phrasing but it just sounds like generic tech death now
Well, I sort of agree but at least they didn't just try to make it sound like Cynic. They used their own tones and everything, it's still good imo.
Matt Fletcher Imo of course.
is it bad that i perfer this over the original?
This can't be as good as the original, because with the distortion beginning almost right away, it loses the impact that the original has when it climaxes. In other words, blowing it's wad too early.
@VisitPumpy lol their original stuff is WAY more brutal than this as Im sure use already figured out. XD
I really prefer the original. This cover really does not do justice to the song textures.
Your preference is one thing. The fact that they nailed it, another. And Textures is far from easy to nail.
eh
its objectively better than the cynic version
When you say 5 more Cynic albums you mean 5 more "Focus"ish albums?
why does everyone keep saying these covers are injecting their own style into the song?! it sounds the same! its not more metal or anything. are any of you paying attention? the only thing that is different is that the mix is better and the guitars are clearer and more forward.
Yeah I have to agree with TheZombieXecutioner.. This was butchered in so many ways..
It sounded garage made, not impressed, I guess cuz so used to hearing Cynic's version.
This sucks.
