If a person didn't mind being limited to FM mode he or she could do the same thing with an inexpensive Retevis RT3S DMR HT with OpenGD77 firmware. The firmware has a built-in satellite tracker and does Doppler-shift correction, basically the same thing as his external satellite tracking box and laptop. (I certainly hope Eric isn't running more power than 5W into a handheld Yagi!)

The RT3S is only half duplex, though. When I use an HT, I use my full-duplex D72 so I can hear myself in the downlink.
