How Strong is 3d Printed Nylon?

  • First part in a series of videos on 3d printing Nylon.
    Nylon has excellent impact strength and is flexible and tough, making it a fantastic choice for functional parts.
    I print a part for my Turbocharged Miata using Taulman Bridge Nylon on my Prusa I3 Mk2.
    Printing Nylon requires a dry environment or drybox to store the filament in for longer prints. In the second part of this series I build a dry box or storing the filament while printing.

    Wow...no love for my choice in free techno music from sound cloud...🙂 UA-cam says I just unlocked the ability to do polls, maybe I should make a poll for the genre of my background music. On a side note I did learn how to balance my audio levels and use the multiband compressor to help even out the lows and highs of my dialogue and am paying closer attention to balancing my music and dialogue audio tracks.

      It's not the choice of music, it's the volume vs your speaking volume. You have the music too loud.

    Tip 1: printable filament its PA12
    Tip 2: make spool in hot continer in time on you print something prehoted filament its beter
    Tip 3: Nylon printed element must by stored for two weeks on atmosfer nylon need drink water slowly, to be strong. If you stress nylon print quickly you broke simply .... wait 2 weeks for full strong resistance.
    Tip 4: sorry for my english ;)
    Tip 5: dont make extruder too hot above 255degr C 260 degradate structurs off nylon.
    Importand not stress end tuoch printed parts for 2 weeks ;) if you don belive tray your selfe print 2 same elements ent tray broke in diferent times.

    Regarding needing a drybox, I've actually had no issues with water absorption on long prints. Pretty sure it entirely depends on how climate controlled your workspace is.

      Climate controlled basement workshop kept at around 72-74 degrees F and 30 to 40% humidity. The whole basement has its own separate air conditioning and heating zone from the rest of the house.

    • @SafetyGlassesRequired

      I've printed nylon on a markforged printer in a climate controlled lab and had nylon absorb enough moisture over time (a few months) in the drybox with the small hole for the filament (but with saturated dessicant) that print quality significantly decreased. Lots of stringing and poor layer adhesion. Likely depends on many things, which brand of nylon filament, what your printing, your environment. Most manufacturers if not all manufacturers of nylon filament recommend drybox storage. The drybox for printing is just extra insurance for expensive filament.

      At the moment, I've been printing Matterhackers NylonX on a TAZ 5 with an upgraded nozzle with pretty good layer adhesion and very little stringing. Multiple print jobs, but for all intents and purposes I've been printing stuff for five days straight as of today. I'm in a bit of a build rush for a robot combat competition coming up this February.
      I guess the filament being 20% Carbon Fiber by weight helps somewhat, though. I probably wouldn't be getting nearly as good results if I was running straight Nylon.

      Prusa has been great. Probably the most consistent print quality of my 4 printers. Only has needed typical maintenance, nozzles, replaced pei sheet, one thermistor. No tensile tests... I guess I could have rigged up something crude to do a tensile test but I trust the published data and the other bloggers/UA-camrs who have tested it. The parts on my car are still working great no failures.

    Newbie question alert!Which is stronger in terms of impact and abrasion-resistance: nylon, ABS or other?
    Was wondering because I was thinking of getting into 3D printing to make custom motorcycle body armour (like cosplay but actually strong enough to be CE rated).

    • @realflow100
      @realflow100 6 років тому

      nylon is like unbreakable indestructible compared to ABS

    • @cakeshoe
      @cakeshoe 6 років тому

      Thanks.
      But now I have another question (and I hope the answer will be useful to everyone): I hear that nylon slowly degrades in sunlight (although I hear there is also UV-resistant nylons).
      This would mean that items printed in nylon would not be suitable for prolonged outdoor usage, right??
      So, in this case, would ABS be better for outdoor usage?
      Also, how about polycarbonate? I hear it is extremely tough, too -- stronger than nylon, I've heard.

    • @VestedUTuber
      @VestedUTuber 5 років тому

      @@cakeshoe
      The thing is, most plastics degrade in sunlight. UV radiation has a bad effect on polymers. And as bad as most nylons are when exposed to UV radiation, ABS is actually worse.
      As for polycarbonate, it's a really tough material but it shatters easily on a hard impact and it's a total pain in the ass to print. If you need that kind of durability combined with better rigidity than nylon, I'd recommend a carbon fiber infused nylon like Markforged Onyx, Matterhackers NylonX or Taulman Alloy960, or a relatively stiff nylon like Alloy910.

  • @jbdbruybhdhcy

    Is that enclosure with space heaters a necessary requirement to prunt nylon?

    • @SafetyGlassesRequired
      @SafetyGlassesRequired  6 років тому

      +Captain Katawa enclosure certainly should help control warping. Depending on how cold the location where your printer is located is the space heaters may or may not be necessary. My printers are in my garage in Ohio where it gets quiet cold in winter . So the heaters help to maintain a 85f-100f environment. The bed heater on most printers in a decently warm environment should help without the help of the heaters.

      I tried wolf bite nitro and didn't have great luck. I didn't spend long iterating to try different settings but it wasn't the silver bullet I was hoping for. I have recently been experimenting with Vision Miner Nano Polymer adhesive and have pretty good luck with simply coating the PEI sheet on the bed and hitting print and getting "mostly" warp free nylon parts. I wouldn't set them on a machine flat surface and call it flat but it's good enough.
