Why shoot deer?
There are more than two million red, roe, fallow, sika, muntjac and Chinese water deer in Britain’s countryside and semi-urban areas, the highest level for 1,000 years. Numbers have doubled since 1999, according to the Deer Initiative, the UK government’s deer agency.
Deer are an attractive and an important part of our wildlife. However, they have no natural predator in the UK so numbers must be sensibly and strategically managed to keep them in balance with their habitat and to prevent damage to crops, trees, woodland flora, gardens and other wildlife.
Deer cause £4.5 million-worth (Forestry Commission Scotland) of damage to plantations and other commercial woodlands in Scotland. Crop damage is estimated at £4.3m a year according to DEFRA, with the greatest damage on cereal crops in east and south-west England.
More than 8,000 hectares (Parliamentary Office for Science and Technology) of woodland with SSI status is currently in ‘unfavourable’ or ‘recovering’ condition due to deer impacts such as browsing and fraying. Deer can also influence the variety of wildlife in woodlands and other habitats by altering structural and plant species diversity. According to the University of East Anglia’s Dr Paul Dolman, that has resulted in a 50% decline in woodland bird numbers where deer are present, impacting particularly on nightingales, blackcaps, chiffchaffs and warblers.
Deer are susceptible to Bovine TB and may be responsible for the transmission of TB to cattle. They are also the likely driver behind the UK’s increasing tick population (Scharlemann et al 2008).
Happily, venison is a delicious meat. It is wild, natural and free range, and - almost fat-free - it is one of the healthiest meats available today. Results from research commissioned by the Game-to-Eat campaign (Leatherhead Food International Research 2006) suggest that there are real health benefits to eating game. Venison is high in protein, low in saturated fatty acids and contains higher levels of iron than any other red meat.
Well done, and great narrative as well. Too many people do not understand true conservation. Too many people think that chicken comes naturally in nugget shapes as well.

I used to shoot rabbits on a golf course and foxes on an estate with my .22LR to protect the pheasant shoots, many a time I was harangued for shooting the rabbits because 'they're so cute!' Believe it or not one female asked me not to shoot those that were pregnant and I was lamping!!!
@@Wtf0069 ahh yes shooting native predators to protect invasive birds. Then people wonder why grey partridges are declining in areas with lots of pheasants...

I do not comment often. But I could feel the sadness in Roy, both in his body and voice. You made a good choice in the shot. The beast had a wonderful life and left a legacy that will go on through many more generations. Thank you for this video and the emotion I now feel.

That animal lived a good long life. It was taken just after its peak as he said it was starting to degrade at that point that animal was taking resources from the deer that need it to fully grow to their peak. It was indeed the right call.
That magnificent ol' buck came to say 'goodbye'...and when Roy couldn't, he turned and stopped, turned again, and waited...until he (Roy), could. The reality of life in the woods: a hard call...a tough call...a good call.
That was incredibly moving. You can hear how hard it was for Roy. Hard as it was, he made the right call.

I have shot hundreds of deer,in UK and now NZ with 25-06.
25-06 Must be the most under rated calibre of the modern era.
Fantastic bit of filming, the anticipation was thick in the air. The best option was taken and you at least got to see him before he deteriorated.

Bitter sweet moment indeed but you made the right choice.Deer management is not for everybody non stalkers or Joe public just don't get it.Management means just that and in my mind better to be humanely dispatched than die of starvation in a long winter or injuries from younger upcoming Bucks.Tough shot to take and I'd of understood if you didn't but you did right by the old lad.All the best.Tony

Andrew Daly overpopulate, loose all the advantages of natural selection, pass on weaker genes causing defects, disease, and misery to the animals themselves. They would destroy farmland, forestry and in time their own habitat and food supply. They would cause car crashes by the hundreds many of them surviving to die painfully over a number of days and the list goes on. Stop producing the bandwagon for the rest of your selectively minded "animal rights" children to jump on to.

What a buck. Almost mythical as he stepped out of the forest. Tough call but the right one. His genes will already have been put to good use.
My favorite rifle is my Browning A Bolt 25-06. After my hunting buddies discovered this rifle courtesy of my advocacy they all bought one. So versatile. With 100 grain bullets it destroys foxes, not too much gun for Roe, kills Reds just fine with 120 grain Nosler partitions. The ultimate deer round. Use in USA for everything except Elk or Moose. Use Weatherby 300 Mag for those beasts with 180 grain Nosler.

What a magnificent old don. I don’t think people realize how difficult it is for hunters of any level. Let alone ph’s and managers that watch them age and grow and become worthy of their own statues.

all this 'buck asked to be finished' does the whole thing a disservice. Roy made a good decision and got on with it. The only time I have seen real animal being offered up was on a fallow farm when one of the prickets had a broken foot and the rest of the group repeatedly pushed the injured animal out towards the kill box and would not let him re-enter the group.

Because this amazing animal was sliding past his prime and it would be easy to let your heart rule your head leave him another year another winter to get bashed up by the younger stronger males coming up. in the wild once a animal starts to go backwards it can appear to be quite slow to begin with but they can start to go downhill very quickly and end up dying a very painful and degrading death. So if you feel anything for the respect that these creatures deserve then you do the right thing by them however hard it might be . Its just the same as you would do for your cat or dog when they get so old and sick that you have to take them to the vets. Its much tougher for these animals in the wild. I hope this helps you to understand

I have seen people let their hearts rule their heads to the detriment of the poor animal who died a slow painful death. because they did not have the courage to do the right thing by the animal involved. I had someone in my own family who selfishly kept their dog alive for another 12 pain filled hours because they could not bear to part with him eventually getting the vet to pay the visit . but that's what caring humans do. sometimes it takes more courage to pull the trigger than not to

I would of let that Buck live to see the sun come up the next day and for the rest of his days. A betrayal of a beautiful animals trust because deep down inside the shooter new that there was a subtle connection between himself and the buck. This is something only a hunter who has spent many hours in the bush can feel and no doubt he felt it here but fired the shot anyway. Management and all that rubbish is all an excuse to feel better about a mistake. Weather the hunter admits it or not, killing that poor animal was a mistake! I apologise if I sound rude. But the shooter will understand exactly what I'm saying.
