I love this film so much, it shows the power films and books and stories/literature have to change lives and change the world for the better. I think Matthew and Jared’s performances in this film are two of the top 5 best performances I have ever seen in my life and I am a film nerd.
@@TheKamikazenaz Hmmm it’s a tough choice to pick a top 5! Heath Ledger as the Joker, Christopher Walken or Robert De Niro in The Deer Hunter, Basically any Robert de Niro performance ever , Jack Nicholson in one flew over the cuckoos nest there are too many to choose from for me
McConaughey and Leto are terrific, and they're easily the best part about the whole movie. That kind of says a bit about how most of the script isn't as good, though. That's not to say that it isn't good, because it is, but without the performances, it wouldn't have been as good. There's some nice directing and cool sound design, nonetheless, but it does go on for about ten minutes too many. There really isn't much else to say about it. 8.3/10, great, one thumb up, above average, etc.
I found this film very disappointing. Apart from Leno and McConaughey's performances, and the good looking cinematography and camerawork, I felt the film was very insubstantial. The script feels like that of a TV movie with predictable plotting, unimaginitive cliched dialogue, and one-dimensional supporting characters. Its not a terrible movie by any means, but if you take away the production values and stars you are left with a perfunctory, made for TV "issue" movie which really doesn't bring anything new to the table.
McConaughey was great but the movie's overrated. Too sentimental. That said the emotional turning pt of the movie, where he "cruises" Leto's character in order to win him back and work with him, was my 2nd fav scene of the yr
I think Dallas Buyers Club is was one of the most overrated films of the year. McConaughey was terrific, but the film itself had too much narrative flaws. The praise that Leto has received is also difficult to understand; he showed Oscar-worthy acting in just two scenes, and his character was very poorly written. And Jennifer Garner was just annoying. I hope the film won't win any Oscars (especially not for Best Original Screenplay), but McConaughey's win looks pretty certain.
I feel Dallas Buyers Club is the most IMPORTANT film of the nominated films. Showcasing how the FDA pushes their own agenda by keeping down drugs that actually help people. Something that still happens in this day and age.
That's interesting considering in reality the science was on the side of the FDA. The drugs Woodruff was pushing were either completely ineffective or very dangerous, while the "evil" AZT in the FDA trials proved to be a very useful component in treating HIV with the correct doses. Dallas Buyers Club is a good study in how Hollywood shapes peoples political opinions.
I saw this movie not knowing a thing about the story, characters anything and it was only because of the performances being praised in media that I decided to watch it and what a good film but the two main actors are excellent its are hard subject to watch but worth it.
I was surprisingly underwhelmed by this. It's not bad, but it's not great; maybe I was expecting a different kind of film but I found it very conventional and quite televisual for a chunk of it. I found the Ron Woodroof character unlikable all the way through; he's a bully and is constantly mean to Rayon. Also I think Jennifer Garner's character was in fact under-written; and because I didn't like Ron I couldn't understand why she did. I feel there was more energy put into writing/performing the Ron Woodroof character whose the only person that feels like a real person in the story. It's also a very ideologically conservative film [not necessarily a criticism but I was somewhat surprised by that] Like other Oscar nominations this year [particularly American Hustle which I kind of enjoyed more] DBC is a film that relies much more on performances rather than solid storytelling and plot. To that end it's not surprising that it's got acting nominations, but it's far from being best picture..... :)
Rumble Stiltskin Doesn't matter. My point is that he was a homophobic person (which he was in real life, but not quite as much as in the film according to people who knew him) and changed.
Leading actor Matthew McConaughey delivers one of his best roles in this emotional, well crafted, well directed, effective & enjoyable biopic. (91%) (4.5/5 stars) (positive)
I think McConaughey and Leto will win. I loved Ejiofor and Abdi but I do think the performances in Dallas Buyers Club were exceptional and they should be awarded so. I reckon 12 Years will win Best Film anyway though (and Cuaron for Best Director most likely). Would like to see one or two awards for Her/Jonze and Nebraska/Payne if possible...and whatever Llewyn Davis/the Coens have left nomination-wise! (cinematography?)
Haha maybe...but they did win the Golden Globes before too. McConaughey's speech was great, as was Leto's...glad they both won! All of the other rewards were well rewarded, though for Best Film even though I knew it'd be 12 Years I wanted it to be something else. Did not agree with foreign language film, original score, adapted screenplay and most of all documentary - The Act Of Killing got robbed.
Yeah certainly didn't agree with original score. Like every other film these days it sounds like something which could have been substituted with music from the discovery channel.
He's going to win the Oscar based on the film you haven't seen yet? In all seriousness Leto was excellent and Mahogany proving he really can be more than the cupboard I had him down as for the films he was around chewing scenery. A nod should go to the make up artists too. Obviously the main actors put in some amazing effort with the weight loss.

Well... we're gonna have to ask.
What are the other 3?

Didn't anyone see the Orange Lamborghini poster behind Matthew Mcconaughey.

Superlative film making.

He literally just explained the whole plot.

The more I watch this movie, the more I like it.Very good movie with exceptional performances.
One of the few films that Mark was actually positive about a Jared Leto preformance
Best Picture/ Actor/ Supporting Actor/ Makeup
yes.
Last few words from Mark summed this flick up perfectly.
Even with all that time, Mark still sounded rushed and slurry.
1337 videos! Kermode is the man I knew it!

best film and performances iv seen in a long long time
I thought it was a wonderful film.
Its a very conventional film. People that homophobic never change.
It's based on a true story. The guy really was homophobic (though much less than it's depicted in the film) and changed his mind.
Tom Waits You know that the Jared Leto character is fictional though right?
Tom Waits Woodrof was bisexual.
Rumble Stiltskin Doesn't matter. My point is that he was a homophobic person (which he was in real life, but not quite as much as in the film according to people who knew him) and changed.
He didn't really change that much in the film, I think he still was kinda homophobic the whole time.

Great predictions! You should have placed some bets..

Well that was spot on
The movie is so that it transformed my Grandfather's views on the LGBTQ community
I love it.
I was so impressed with Jared Leto's performance.
Yeah! Matthew McConaughey
Matthew Mahogany.
Did this guy even mention Leto once
Yeah I guess he did
Loved the film and i also thought all of the awards McConaughey and Leto received were well deserved.
I am going to see this movie this weekend. I think Jared Leto will win the Oscar.

Burp Reynolds Did you read my comment? I said I THINK he is going to win. Jared Leto is a very good actor. I suggest you check out some of his films.
Luvie1980 I've seen him in a few things. P.s. chill
Burp Reynolds I am chilled. Maybe you should chill.
Luvie1980 *Yawns
This is a performance film. I honestly did not care for the plot or direction but the performances kept me interested.
This film was beyond incredible
