    I got a hug from Jared Leto when I was 14 after I saw his band live. Still consider it to be one of my greatest accomplishments. heh...
    I'm gonna try and see this movie after christmas. I've been dying to see it the minute I found out Jared was in it. Not only am I a big fan of his music but I always thought he was a great actor, and it's obvious that he's very committed to the roles he chooses to play (like when he gained a bunch of weight for Chapter 27). It'd be awesome if he got nominated for an Oscar (McConaughey too).

    I think it's gonna be a tough award season for lead actor between Chiwatel Eijafor, Matthew McConaughey, Idris Elba, Oscar Isaac, Juaquin Phoenix, Leo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, and Tom Hanks. Just a crazy competitive field this year for that award. To think that all of those people I just listed won't even get nominated for the Oscar is just crazy to me.

    Mathew was really awesome in True Detective , I also like how the show is more realistic and that it takes them the whole season to solve the case and through flashbacks and current time it takes decades to solve the case. Unlike every other crime drama where the bad guy is caught in a couple hours or days rapped up in a 40 minute show.

    MM really has turned his career around. Ever since I saw his performance in Killer Joe, I've really enjoyed watching him as an actor. Then Mud came and I was hooked. Who knew he was so good when he kept doing those stupid romcoms where he played the same character in every role? Not a fan of Leto per say although he nailed the role in Requiem For A Dream so I know he can be good.

    • @guitarman0365
      @guitarman0365 10 років тому

      ugh killer joe was so awkward to watch..him making an underage girl do all that stuff for him and touching his cock and shit. I mean yes it is just a movie and in reality the actress is not a minor at all but the fact that it was about an underage girl made everything so disturbing to watch.

    You know, I was actually going to ask you if you had listened to any of Jared Leto's music with Thirty Seconds to Mars, I actually didn't know he was the band's lead singer until more recently, let's hope he wins Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars for this film, can't say the same about Matthew McConaughey for best leading actor though, that should go to Leo DiCaprio, because he's been snubbed one time too many.

  • @movielover288

    I just saw it today. It was good, but not great. I personally thought that it was a bit overhyped. The editing was pretty choppy and, as you said, the tone was very inconsistent. Matthew McConaghuey's performance was alright (a little overrated in my opinion (it was definitely better than most stuff he put out)), but my god did Jared Leto give such a magnificent portrayal as Rayon. I'm hoping that he gets the Oscar this year for Best Supporting Actor!

    Every time someone reviews this movie, the reviewer always says "Jennifer Garner wasn't in the same level as Matt and Leto." But why? Did her character HAVE to be as extreme as the other two? Do enlighten me, because I really don't understand why everybody keeps saying that about her performance. She was playing a doctor. Naturally, her healthy doctor was going to pale in comparison with the skinny transgender and the sickly cowboy, as far as appearances go (and appearances do help sell a role, otherwise Matt and Leto wouldn't have bothered with the extreme weight loss), but that doesn't mean her contribution should be overlooked.

    • @utkarshed
      @utkarshed 9 років тому +2

      +zhaquiri No, that's not the point. Being extreme or odd is different from being good. Gary Oldman and Aaron Eckhart's performances in The Dark Knight are beloved because of how well they portrayed the subtle emotions of their characters. Jennifer Garner was good, but actually wasn't at the same level as the other 2 not because of the character she was given, but how well she portrayed it.

    • @zhaquiri
      @zhaquiri 9 років тому

      Utkarsh Bansal Gordon and Dent are pretty significant characters in the Batman universe, especially relative to Garner's Dr. Saks, who didn't really play a very important role in DBC, but simply acted as some sort of an underscore for the two more prominent characters. I saw her performance as nuanced, and it didn't need to be anything more than that, because that was the purpose of the character. Woodroof was there for the satisfaction of the story, and Rayon was there for the heart...while Eve was simply there to ground the movie.
      I stand by my point: Because of the extremeness of the other two characters, it doesn't matter how well Garner played her part...it's always, always, always going to pale in comparison to McConaughey's and Leto's performances. If people truly mean what you're suggesting they mean, then why is it that all of these reviewers seem to be sharing the same line -- that Garner "was not in the same level." I haven't even heard an actual _reason_ why they think she "wasn't in the same level." So far, apparently, "she just wasn't."

    • @utkarshed
      @utkarshed 9 років тому

      Not all, actually. If I remember right, the Schmoes actually loved her performance. And I thought she had an important role in the story and she was nuanced in it, but many actors can manage that level of nuance. If you look at The Fighter, Christian Bale and Melissa Leo had the extreme roles and Amy Adams was relatively grounded, but no one forgets to mention how great she was. That is because of the nuance. Garner was good, but not at that level.

    • @zhaquiri
      @zhaquiri 9 років тому +2

      Utkarsh Bansal Now that you mention Amy Adams in The Fighter, I guess you're right.

And I agree with Chris, the really great films are the ones that stay with you after you leave the theater.That´s why Avengers is nothing next to The Dark Knight for example, the second one is deep and makes you think, Avengers did absolutely nothing to me (I know comic book movies are a different story, but still).

    Good review, but I take issue with one of your own tonal shifts: "you're like yeah, I can completely understand why this guy got AIDS, he just lead the worst, filthiest lifestyle."
    Is this the 1980s? Do we have to fight the stereotype that AIDS is some filthy person's disease all over again? True, it's harder to get than we thought, and certain things you do (and MM's character did them) that increase your odds of getting it. But you can still get it from one instance of unprotected sex -- and the number of "accidental" pregnancies suggests that vast numbers of non-filthy people have unprotected sex, too.
    Maybe you were trying to pay tribute to the film's "realistically dirty" approach, whatever that means to you, but it came out so wrong. Why not just say it was realistic, and true to the characters?

    • @zettrix1710

    Matthew McCoughnahey is really unlucky. In previous years he would have nailed the win. But this year unfortunately, I think he was pipped by Cheitel Elijofor. Jared Leto is in an even more competitive arena with the likes of Michael Fassbender, Daniel Bruhl and surprisingle Barkad Abdi. Its tough to say whether he will win.

    • @FinalCutGaming
      @FinalCutGaming 11 років тому

      I think Chiwetel is the only one that will without a doubt get nominated (considering that's just as competitive as winning this year), but it's fair game when the five golden nominees are announced. The level of acting between Michael Fassbender and Jared Leto are on a different level than the other two to me, and that's definitely saying something (Captain Phillips is in my top 3 of the year, for Christ's sake), so I believe it is between those two.

    • @resurrectionist1
      @resurrectionist1 11 років тому +1

      Nick Fraser Like the insight man! Captain Phillips is on my list of best movies this year too. However, with the academy, it can get extremely political. I'm agreeing with you that Fassbender and Leto gave great performances which really stood out for their imagination. However, Abdi's turn as a Somalian pirate and Daniel Bruhl's rendering of Niki Lauda might actually wind up winning for their i guess....fitting of criteria as safer bets on the part of the Academy voters.

    • @FinalCutGaming

      Vedant Naik I think the Academy, in the case of Barkhad Abdi, will most likely only nominate him because his accent already fit the role (horrible excuse, but these are the same guys that put Christian Bale in the best SUPPORTING actor role, so anything goes). With the case of Daniel Bruhl, he doesn't have the same momentum when it comes to publicity as the other two; don't get me wrong, his performance was fantastic, but the other two have so many supporters compared to that of Bruhl. Here's hoping we see a great race leading up to the event.

    My only complaint about this movie was that, while McCoughaney's character was great, Leto's was about as two-dimensional as Angel in Rent. He was pretty much the archetypal "gay with a heart of gold" character and you really get no insight into his character at all.

    I thought this film was good, a bit overrated. McConaughey and Leto are great but the movie felt cliché and dull here and there, and a little Oscar bait-y. I still think Mud is McCounaughey's best movie of the year. Though I haven't seen The Wolf of Wall Street yet.

      The one thing you can't knock is even though Leo hasn't won an Oscar yet he is nominated on a regular. You don't see that from some of these other actors. There nominated once and might win it and then that's it. Leo has great range

      I just don't see it and I don't understand why he keeps getting work. There's something about his face that makes him look like a perpetual child to me. Perhaps it's because I remember him as a child star though. But it's his voice that puts me off. I appreciate a good voice and I just find his voice uncharismatic. He's no Al Pacino (and yes I know he does the 'shouty' thing occasionally). I suppose it's all subjective though.
