McConaughey did it to show people he was serious. He describes the extreme diet he adhered to to lose the weight, and the impact it had on his body.

Weight loss isn’t just physical.
It’s mostly mental
Yeah, use my method. Get depressed, stop eating.
True same get stressed and that's it
@@taylor92493 lol, that does the opposite for me. I start eating more, when I’m depressed
@@taylor92493 I’m on this diet right now it’s been 3 days and it’s honestly not that bad at all.
I had something similar, I was always stocky growing up, at about 18 I went vegetarian and dropped about 25lbs from 185-160, while at that weight I was mentally the clearest and sharpest I’d ever been
160 isn't even that low though. Are you saying you were that much sharper from only 25 lbs down?
@@JasonOwensYT yeah. 160 is pretty low for me, I was very low body fat, around 10% possibly approaching 9, I’m just someone who is naturally heavy and dense, so 160 on me looks and feels very different to most. For example I’m at the end of a bulk rn (which I severely regret lol) and weigh about 225 comfortably, approx 18%-20% body fat. I’m 21 now.
@@ElGuapo4000 Ahh I see. I'm the same way being dense. It's interesting to see if you could reach the same BF you were back then but at a higher weight when you cut after the bulk. Right now I'm cutting to 8-10% already finished my bulk.
@@JasonOwensYT ohhh nice bro! Takes alot of dedication, discipline and work to get down there, keep it up brother! And yeah I’m interested to see how much new muscle I keep as I transition to my cut, I’m aiming to get back down there. It’s been a while, I haven’t gone below like 12-15% since then. I’ll try to come back to this comment and update you.
It's a real thing. It's called "autophagy." When people fast past a particular point, I believe it's 16+ hours, the body begins the process of basically cleansing itself from within including eliminating potentially harmful cells, losing weight, etc. Also what happens is the mind sharpens like never before.

I remember cutting weight for wrestling I dropped 10 pounds in 3 days don’t miss them days give him props for doing what he does ✌🏼
I had a similar experience, my gym had this scale for one month before passing it on to the next gym that told you everything including body fat percentage.. I weighed in at over 190lbs on the first day and decided that I had put off getting shredded for long enough, it's something I had always wanted and now I had the motivation to do it. That day I cut out all artificial foods, sugars, drinks etc.. I ate two meals of chicken breast and vegetables, some grapes and a smoothie each day. I trained twice a day, including an intense fasted cardio session every morning. I stuck to this the whole month and went from 14 stone down to 10 stone (196 lbs to 140lbs) in one month.. I slept 2 hours a night if I was lucky, but never felt tired. I was more mentally alert than I ever had been in my life, and had intense feelings of sheer nirvana here and there.. It was an experience to say the least, and I got absolutely shredded and was easily at a single digit body fat percentage. Keeping in mind I had burned a ton of fat, but also muscle in the process. I wouldn't recommend it, and honestly it's not for everyone.. But I can relate to everything McConaughey is saying here.
@Zackaria Gudlè Honestly man, It’s very unhealthy to lose that amount of weight in such a short amount of time. I didn’t know what I was doing to myself. You’re already at a healthy weight, but if you do want to lose a few lbs then get in a healthy balanced diet of carbs, fat and protein, eat at around your maintenance level (not under) and get all your calories in within 4/5 meals.. This will keep your metabolism spiked, also drink a ton of water. Be healthy about it, don’t restrict yourself. Whole foods are the way to go

So true about how it’s hard to gain weight back the right way.. I used to be anorexic and tried really hard to “rebuild” myself in a healthy way through getting into fitness and eating very clean for a few years gently coming out of it. It’s tough but doable and now I can eat just as much as I used to before I was anorexic but it took time and I had to gain a lot of lean muscle and stay pretty fit. Luckily I think once you’ve been that disciplined before you don’t really lose it.. I feel really in control of my diet and general health so it’s easy to pull those reigns in, and you have so much knowledge about nutrition which makes it easy to make the right choices.
One of the greatest ever!
I think there’s a fine line between acting and health ! My son was 140 lbs and. 6 feet tall ( not by choice), I could count his ribs he was so tiny , now 200 healthy muscle , this is crazy , your organs and mental state may be effected ! I too was thin , you loose your energy it’s nuts !
When I was anorexic, I thought my mental clarity was high. I think in actuality I was just being hyper focused on one topic with few other responsibilities
I don’t eat for 4 hours and my brain tells me I’m fuckin dying 😂
@@AttilatheThrilla ha ha same here!... and I just lost 50lbs eating every 4 hours btw but still counting calories.
That is what it is. Same thing here when I was anorexic. It was all I had to focus on.
Having a clear goal with clear methods of achiving it helps, but its a gift from our cave men past mostly. You need to have a clear mind if you are starving coz confused hungry hunter is a dead hunter. Your body starts running on ketons, less inflamations, more grouth hormone in the system, reproductive system is slown/shut down, all the fat is burning, your blood vessels clearn, all the junk in the cells is used for fuel or repair, ect. Hunger is the default state in the nature. So we are pretty damn good adapted to it.
I totally relate to this! I was anorexic in my second last year of high school and my academic performance basically skyrocketed. Don’t get me wrong - the effects it had on pretty much everything else in my life was terrible, especially relationships. But yeah I felt really... balanced and hyper aware. Probably just running on adrenaline and cortisol though.

Totally get the he kept losing it even after he started eating more. Happened to me too. For a few months after cutting out dairy and gluten( did it with my wife for support for a cleanse) I would eat anything and lost a little more then stayed that weight no matter what for a few months. Then it went back to normal from there. It amazed me tho and showed me how powerful the body is.
He’s a dedicated man.
Notice he ate small, frequent 3x daily, meat-based (egg and fish) products primarily so he was protecting his gut, muscles, nerves, brain. And NO sugar in that diet as described here. I would love to hear more about who he worked with to come up with that regimen. And if he reintroduced sugar gradually or not at all...fascinating. FIVE months. That is not a super long time. 50 pounds. What a difference it made. He is one badass DUDE.
Christian Bale lost over 60 pounds for The Machinist, he ate an apple and one can of tuna a day.

Love this guy
Dallas's a great movie and Matthew did an amazing job. His weight loss made more sense to me comparing The Machinist with Christian Bale. Both great movies.
He's right about some stuff but he doesn't explain it well. If you starve yourself for a while & then start eating properly again, your body will prioritize storing extra fat rather than optimizing muscle growth. Its because your body is accustomed to being underfed & extra fat is easier & better to transfer into energy than muscle. Some people will say it's like your body is "preparing to be starved again" & I think that's a good analogy.
One of the downsides of this is that if you have anorexia & manage to get through it, your body will end up storing more fat which is typically less flattering than a normal combination of fat & muscle. This can cause the sufferer to feel validated in their body dysmorphia & may cause a relapse, especially if the person is unaware of this effect.
The stuff he says about continuing to lose weight after eating a regular amount is misleading though. Weight change is calories in minus calories out/used. If you starve yourself for nearly a year & eat properly for a week you're going to gain weight that week, unless you have diarrhoea or something & the food isn't absorbed properly. I think he must have underestimated how much he was eating because he probably felt full quicker but still wasn't eating enough to get himself out of that caloric deficit.
High buring rate maybe?
Nothing beats Christian Bale in The Machinist.
"Mental acuity was at an all time high for me." "I had such a boundless amount of mental energy... I didn't have leverage physically." "So the body... it was a lot more fragile... but, boy, the mental... every bit of power that I lost from the neck down sublimated to the neck up." Makes me think of all the descriptions of the classic gray alien: GIANT head, super frail body. Could just be the end result of long-term evolution on another planet where the humanoid species made a cultural decision to sacrifice physical prowess for that "mental acuity."
“Physical prowess” doesn’t really serve a purpose now anyway, since we no long have to hunt for food and live in tribes to survive
Wow, weirdly enough enough I was thinking of the same thing. I wonder if in the future we will discover that body mass has some impact on mental acuity.
When you don’t eat and fast this is what happens. The mind and your awareness and clarity is amazing. I fasted for 10 days once and was the best feeling ever.
Many monks fast for even 10 months.
The first 4 days of fasting is awful tho. Painful. You feel sick and flu symptoms and toxic. 😊
@@hawksm2783 it’s already known why, your body runs far more efficiently on keytones. He was basically on a ketosis diet, except he took it to an extreme by really cutting down on how much he ate.
@@Aricelable It is very important to approach it with caution and proper hydration/movement/rest.
