Ricci was a lovely and incredibly honest man and a tremendous natural violinist. So easy for him and his hands work so beautifully and natural. Excellent conducting too. Very inspiring! Eric Shumsky
Wow! I thought it was only me who loves (or even knows) this concerto! I discovered a recording of this (Ricci's recording) at our local public library waiting for my parents to pick me up back in 7th grade (many decades ago), and have been absolutely enchanted by it ever since. I hope to play it some day. I working on #1 right now, but this is definitely on my bucket list.
Grande Ricci!
In the hands of the right violinist, the Paganini concerti are absolutely MAGICAL. Shunsuke Sato also has a fabulous recording of this concerto on period instruments, definitely worth a listen!
Dear Maestro, you are always with us. Thank you for your talent and everything! Thank you you for Elizabeth Basoff-Darskaia, considering your best student, she was always following your suggestions. She loved you so much as a teacher and admire you as a great violinist. You are always with us. We love you and your playing, we love your wonderful opinion about other musicians. You are always with us. Love and love to Julia, she is the best.
My heart-felt thanks for posting one of the greatest performances of the last century, by one of the greatest of violinists, who is still with us, inspiring and passing on his wisdom and skills.
Aveva la stessa altezza di Paganini. 1,58 m. Dio ti abia in gloria grande e ammiratissimo maestro Ricci❤
Que saudade! Eu adoro o Ricci. O violinista e o ser humano. Ele não enfrenta as dificuldades. Ele atropela as dificuldades.Mas, nos cantabili, que som, que arco... Como ele gostava de tocar. Como ele tinha prazer de tocar. E o encore?
He had one hell of a left hand. I never cared much for his music making but he certainly knew everything about the technical side of the violin. The funny thing was, he was a very small man, and yet look at what he could do? Literally anything. He actually sounded good into his 80s. There's a video of his last recital out there - it's good! It was done 30 years later, in 2000.
His understanding of the left hand mechanism is like no other. I took a semester of lesson with a prof who used to be one of his students, and learned a little bit of his technique.
Thanks for this up load and for this sad news. I'm a huge fan of Ricci's. I met him several times after concerts in Scotland. It really is the end of an era of great violinists.
"You always hear of the 'delicate, sensitive artist.' I assure you that it takes the nerves of a bullfighter, the digestion of a peasant, the vitality of a nightclub hostess, the tact of a diplomat, and the concentration of a Tibetan monk to lead the strenuous life of a virtuoso." - Jascha Heifetz - That, ladies and gentlemen, Ruggiero Ricci had. R.I.P.
i've always been a big Ricci fan. i "get" him. a former teacher of mine was a childhood friend of his in San Francisco. but, i've always been frustrated by his sloppy play. he had so much talent, but he took it for granted and coasted on it. he smears through arpeggios without even try to get all the notes, uses a slappy, unappealing spicatto, etc. with more discipline, he could have still played "on the edge" and thrilled us all, but been that much more impressive.

For everyone's information this video is a recording of an exceptionally fine live transmission of a concert performance, by RAI - world leaders in TV production In those early days of TV, cameras were quite different from today's digital kit - you can see one at bottom right in the wide shot of the orchestra: you can see how big it is so it would be impossible to move the cameras during the performance: lens systems were also much more primitive and might need to be changed during coverage : cameras had to be placed where they don't disturb performers or audience. The coverage in my opinion is sensitive and comprehensive giving viewers at home a close-up experience of the concert as well as a sense of the atmosphere in the hall
I do appreciate all this. The outrageously unnecessary panning out (or in) and change-over from one shot to another has absolutely nothing to do with difficulties in camera positions or old equipment. Similar situations even in the 1920ies or 1930ies even were filmed far better. It glaringly looks far more like lack of commonsense judgment rather than anything else.
Don't throw the subject sideways by claiming difficulties of where the camera is situated (only). The issue is where the camera points, not where it is.
Rasputin Czar you have not understood at all: there was no TV of this scale in the 30s let alone the 20s. This live transmission will have been directed by a top world class film maker and Italian film makers at that time were the world leaders in motion picture creation. To me it is a superlative production with wonderful timing and sensitive cutting which must have been a real treat for the small TV audience who will have seen it.
Who played the 1963 recording Brahm#77 Concerto on Columbia reords? I've been trying to find it online and get no results. Was it Ruggiero or Zino. I know it was one them.
I like his left thumb position. Saves a lot of muscle stress. Golly ,Ricci apart ,Old Paga couldn't half write good tutti between times. I saw RR in Liverpool in the 1960s .

Many people told me I couldn't do it, but I have, I've played ABBA on my violin, by ear, I am so very greatful to The Soundstage for their support of my forray back into the hardest instrument to play there is. SUPPOSEDLY THE VIOLIN IS THE MOST DIFFICULT UNSTRUMENT , AND FOR A TIME IT SEEMED A VERY CAPRICIOUS, CONTRARY OBSTANANT, AWKWARD, MALLEVONANT, PAIN TO PLAY. HOWEVER I LEARNED FROM AN ORIENTAL WOMAN SOME THINGS THAT REIGNITED MY PASSION FOR THE INSTRUMENT. THINGS THAT WERE SORELY HELD OUT, AND BACK FROM ME AS I WAS GROWING UP. I THOUGJT WELL I CANT READ MUSIC, MY FATHER, MY MOTHER, MY GRANDFATHER, MY VIOLIN TEACHER JUST PUT SO DAMN MUCH PRESSURE ON ME, I COULD ONLY GIVE UP. SO I DID FOR A WHILE. BUT MY LOVE FOR THE INSTRUMENT KEPT KNAWING AWAY AT ME, SO YES I AM LIMITED IN MY REPERTWAR BUT THAT DOESNT MEAN I CANT PLAY THE VIOLIN. SHE SINGS FOR ME AND I LET HER TEACH ME BY EAR. MY MOTHER WAS VERY IMPATIENT FOR ME TO READ MUSIC. BUT IF I HAVE A PROPERLY TUNED INSTRUMENT IT DOESNT MATTER. PEOPLE MADE IT HARD FOR ME SO I COULDNT REALLY ENJOY THE VIOLIN. AND TO ME THAT IS THE BIGGEST WASTE. THEN THE ELECTRONIC TUNER CAME ON THE THE SCENE AND ITS A DIFFERENT BALL GAME JOSIE!
I'm now listening/watching this in clear detail, and this is the greatest of violin sounds imaginable. Such clarity and perfection.

Ruggiero Ricci è stato un grande. Anche Piero Bellugi un grande direttore. Bellugi è stato anche un grandissimo didatta. Buon ascolto.
31:42 His down bow staccato was amazing!
Yah, totally incredible.
My favorite Paganini concerto, very hard to find.
Wow! I thought it was only me who loves (or even knows) this concerto! All absolutly perfect!!! Ricci brilliant always and the orquestra made a great job too!! Viva Ricci, viva Italia!
Bravissimo! Thank you for uploading this precious video!

amazing he is so good!!
Just amazing....
Grand artiste 😢
What a daredevil!! Ricci is beyond believe. His virtuosity is the most diabolic of all the virtuosos, with Gitlis as a close second.
Thanks for this up load and for this sad news. I'm a huge fan of Ricci's. I met him several times after concerts in Scotland. It really is the end of an era of great violinists.
yeah paganini was the goat. I cried so much when he died

Exactly, he was always touted as the "exemplary" exponent but many many people can (now!) play the Caprices better than he could, flawlessly.
I give him the gold ticket

Is that a shoulder rest Ricci is using starting at 4:18 ? Looks interesting....Again thanks for uploading this video, Ricci is one of my favorites.
Bravo!!!
great finale 26:02-26:46
His violin sings like a human voice.
How could members of the audience take their eyes off the miraculous Ricci?
He is so intense at times, for some it may be to much.

Could anyone help me with finding the orchestra scores of this concerto? Nowhere available
Could you please upload a separate video clip of the Paganini 'Le Streghe'?

You d be surprised how few people on this earth can actually manipulate the simplest of things like holding a camera in the right direction :-)

although he is short , his hands are big , like Perlman ,
young Ricci's shape of L't hand and the tone such as the staccoto are same as Perlman' style
