- This Epic Episode documents the final leg of Geoff Macqueen’s solo circumnavigation of Tasmania in ‘Dinghy Spart’, a 13’2” open sailing dinghy.
Mat is lucky enough to join Geoff for this final leg, and together they share one of their most memorable sailing experiences attempting something few boats this size would embark upon.
The two boats cover nearly 100nm over four days to round two of Tasmania’s most iconic Capes and complete a full circumnavigation of The Tasman Peninsula (Turrakana).

Is there an award for best dinghy cruising video? You win with this one 😊
Man, some of those shots are like little paintings. What a playground.
Ross Barnett - These Small Craft Tassie blokes are setting the dinghy cruising bar really HIGH !!! Reckon a trip 'round Aotea might give them a nudge? Truly awe inspiring trip: the epitome of both cruising and dingy. Much repect.❤
Great achievement mat and Jeff. Well done and thanks for sharing. That's quite an adventure. Congratulations Jeff on finishing your circumnavigation.
My dad loves Sailing was also in the Navy he also built a wooden Dinghy, Ive always been around boats Ive never actually sailed myself this video makes me wanna build or get a sailboat 👍 thanks for sharing 😉
Genuinely awesome trip and video. Great job Mat and Geoff! Inspirational! I rekon I would have put the third reef in!
That Scamp is a remarkably impressive small boat. Great mini-adventure, fellers.
Well done Mat and Geoff, thanks for bringing us along. Truly a fabulous dinghy voyage.
What an adventure by two gung-ho sea-dogs! I loved how the footage swapped back and forth between the two boats, especially in the vicinity of the sea cliffs.
Fantastic trip and the more challenging with the smaller vessels. Congrats to you both.
Absolutely the best sailing video I've seen. May we have more, please?
Ahh man, a fantastic video and adventure. Should have told work I was sick and joined you!
Arguably your best video ever, stunning scenery and voyage. That entrance at 30:16 seems to be from Tolkien's stories.
Truly awesome! Thanks for sharing this. Those cliffs were astonishing.
Epic journey. Congrats to both of you. Loved the close up of the pinnacles. Crazy.
The pinnacle of dinghy cruising! Well done to you both and thanks for taking us there.
You had a lot of things go right for you on that trip! The wind against the tidal flow was perfect. I slept in a bivvy on Cape Pillar. It's such a windy spot there's a plain on the top called "Hurricane Flats". The night we were there the power was knocked out on Bruny Island.
Well done to both of you on a gutsy and gusty achievement. Magnificent scenery!
Well, that was fabulous. What an adventure. Now I can tick that off my to -do list.
Wow!! What a great voyage around those magnificent capes! Thanks for bringing us along and showing the capabilities of the scamp ( with an excellent captain of course) Great work!!!
I enjoyed seeing two boats each videoing each other. The clouds coming over the top of the cliffs looked very cool. That is a good trip to have notched up Mat. congradulations.
Congratulations to both of you , it’s a big effort to do that , picked the weather perfectly .That’s about as good as it gets around that area ,it’s always lumpy.
The wind comes off Tasman island in gusts,
Great video and a long time in a small boat
What an adventure! That was nothing short of amazing. Thanks for sharing with us.
Bloody ripper Mat, congrats Geoff, cheers
Thanks for having us aboard. Well done.
Mat, Epic just doesn’t seem ample to describe this one! Watched every minute. Gonna share with our sailing club. Fantastic job on the story and video as well. Thanks!
Epic dinghy mission!!! Well done guys. Thanks so much for sharing. Love your videos. From UK
What a remarkable adventure! Well done! You had to have courage to film the whales up so close. I would have been scared, awed, by them. Best dinghy cruising video I’ve seen!
When sea kayaking around the Burrup Peninsula (WA) we've had hump backs come from several miles away to say hello. They got so close you could smell their fishy breath! They are pretty curious about us.
The early colonists in Hobart would complain about the noise of their singing at nIght.
Very cool Mat 👌👌 one of the best yet. Never get sick of that backdrop
What an excellent video, truly mesmerizing to watch. Well done, glad you did it safely and recorded it for us to enjoy!
Awesome video. Looks like a truly awesome place to cruise! Well done.
What a great trip, thats a voyage to remember. Houdini looks to be a real fast little boat, love the trailer sailer, such an easy way to go sailing, because of their simplicity weight and ease of launching and sailing these boats get used so much more than keel boats sitting at a berth in a marina with it's constant maintaining and costs. Gotta get me another TS
What a fantastic sail! I was contemplating which boat is nicer. They appear to be equal in performance. Or maybe Houdini is a little faster? The Scamp has the cuddy for shelter, which is a bonus. Scamp seems to have some lee helm, but that could be trimmed out. I think Houdini is the better looking boat, but they are both lovely.
Thanks for showing us what the SCAMP can do. Great video!
Yeah Houdini!! Plus Sea Dog. Amazing sail. Cheers
Well done! Congratulations to you both. I really enjoyed that.
That's a beauty mate. Go the mighty Scamp!
Epic. Just epic.
Brilliant vidoe and amazing trip, loved it.
I hope you are both at Tawe Nunagah in February. I’m keen to see these boats up close.
Hi Jason. Geoff won't be at TN25, but he and Dinghy Spart will be at AWBF25. I'll be doing the TN25 in the Navigator. Sea Dog might be floating around the AWBF25 somewhere...
Phantastic journey! Loved every minute of it!
Another great video.
I always look forward to your videos and you've outdone yourself.
Awesome spot to go sailing! Greetings from the Baltic Sea !
Well done you and well done john Welsford!
Most people wouldn’t do what you are doing. What an amazing video!
LOVE the videos, keep it up!!
Great video and fantastic adventure. Thank you.
Fantastic journey- cheers!
Epic trip. You are very brave.
Great voyage, loved it.
I think the whales knew where you were every minute. It is almost like they were leading you through the mists.
Magnificent
Great!
The sail has a slight W shape when against the mast rather than the nice wing curve on the other, so yeah one side slower.
Great videos! Where did you buy your Scamp? Thanks Ross
Love it
Cool trip! Both of those boats punch well above their weight. I see you're using an outboard, what became of the e-propulsion?
A friend was borrowing my ePropulsion that weekend.
I really want to build an Ilur but every time I see your scamp I want to build one.
Not sure I'd want to do a trip like that in an Ilur.
At the 12:00 minute mark, there's a close look at both booms. Looks like both are on the port side of the mast.
Dinghy Spart's sprit boom is on the port side, but the sail and yard is on the starboard side. The opposite to Sea Dog.
Ok, now I understand. Thanks
I think you have access to the Scamp SeaDog but also a Navigator - Solid Air. Both seem fit for purpose but can you share a bit about why the Scamp over the Navigator for this voyage? More robust? Better sleeping? Closer matched to Houdini? Thanks!
Hi there. This was to be my final voyage in Sea Dog. I would've preferred the Nav, but it was a nice way to say bye to the SCAMP.
Bloody Awesome in the true sense of the word. Just curious though, why didn't you use the propulsion? Recently I spent 8 weeks at sea aboard an 18 footer in Kimberley and just couldn't carry enough fuell so electric seems a good option for future voyages. Very interested in your thoughts
I actually lent the motor to a mate for that weekend. Thanks for your comment.
My pleasure Matt. Thought it might be something to do with recharge or range. Eagerly waiting your appraisal of the hydrocharging of the epropulsion. Thanks for the reply and for the journey and all the others too. So many good words to describe them so I'll just say "tickityboo"
Why did you opt for Sea-Dog over the Navigator & the Pathfinder?
That's what I kept asking him!
Great question! Answer: it was to be my last trip in Sea Dog.
I wonder if the asymetric centre board means she points better on one tack than the other?
Those short, wide hulls are like riding a bucking bronco in any sea state. Totally exhausting.
What life jacket is your preference please?
I value your opinion- thank you
Hey mate. I use a Baltic Sandhamn (rated at 50N) underneath a Crewsaver yoke with harness attachment point (rated at 150N). It's overkill for small boats but a good idea if you're heading a little further out.
Are you using your water ballast on this trip?
I only ever have the water ballast in. She doesn't sail well without.
The differences in speed could be due to body weight differences. I'm just sayin'.
I have heard a rumour that there is going to be a Scamp building workshop in Tasmania in 2025. Do you know anything about it?
Hi there. Yes, the rumour was true but unfortunately it won't be going ahead.
👍👍😁
