2024 F1 Japanese GP QUALIFYING analysis by Peter Windsor

- Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez start the Japanese GP from the front row of the grid - but the margins are close and the Pirelli tyre strategies will be varied. McLaren-Mercedes' Lando Norris starts P3, ahead of Ferrari's Carlos Sainz and Aston's Fernando Alonso, while Oscar Piastri, who qualified second for McLaren in 2023, lines up in P6 after a strong fuel run in FP3. After a promising Friday, the Mercedes factory drivers qualifyied only P7/P9, Sir Lewis Hamilton ahead of George Russell, with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc (P8) and VisaRB's local hero, Yuki Tsunoda rounding out the top ten. Peter Windsor in this video highlights the key aspects of the day with specially-created data from the speed trap, the long runs in FP3 and sector times.

Peter a small suggestion, it will make your whole video so much more interesting than it already is if you can have a graphic of the specific track layout in the background on your right hand side top. Even better would be with the turns named in the old style classic names.
Even without the names the layout would be amazing to visualize all the details you bring to us of the deftness of driving or the lack of it, the manipulations etc …
You are legendary level when talking about these and have tons of experience doing so, but we the listeners are at your level 😅yet, so give us some more assist with a layout in the back.
It’s a super easy fix for your team. Probably your brand logo could be in the center of the track 🎉
Thanks for considering.
Agreed its tough to follow
Love this idea!
I’m afraid Peters analysis is excellent, but he is not a laptop wizard (you can’t have it all 😊👍)
So send it to him. Don't be lazy.
Agreed 1,000%!!🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I love the circuit and the fans. Real fans, no haters, no booing. As it should be during the whole season.
I wish my country would be a bit more like Japan. You are absolutely spot on. Did you see the man in RB gear with the AsMar gear under it? Simply lovely, as a great man once spoke.
@@GriotDNB Yes, I saw this. Great.
You’re upset your favorite driver isn’t getting cheered on enough? I’d venture to say you’re not a real fan, sports have always been tribal. And let’s not forget F1 was and IS a European sport. I don’t think we need the Japanese to teach us how to enjoy a sport created by our people in Europe. I get it Max got booed in the last few races, get a grip.
@@dspirea hey now.. No need to quantify or compare how much of a fan one happens to be. It may be so that the sports you favour reek of tribalism, and booing has it's place there. But unnecessary in F1, imho. Since you mentioned F1's history; I've always interpreted F1 to be more gentlemanly, rich privileged persons sport with plenty of respect and honour for safety and each other. Booing for unsportsmanlike behavior is somewhat understandable, but doing so for the sake of it shows lack of respect for the competitors and their achievements, no?
"I don't think we need the Japanese to teach us how to enjoy a sport created by our people in Europe."
I don't think the OP was suggesting any kind of culture lesson for you 😂. In any case, F1 is global now.
At Zandvoort we cheer for all drivers too
11:44 THIS is the single most underrated quality of GP drivers that fans overlook and nobody in media talks about. Thank you for bringing these perspectives!
Love your analysis. I think Russell brake tested Piastri in the pit lane. Wonderful reflexes and anticipation. Good thing he wasn't looking at his steering wheel. 2. Gotta be consistant.
Max is still the tire whisperer
its a good car
Seems like Leclerc is having a tough time so far this year
He's overrated and sainz us underrated
Thank you Peter. Your insights make watching F1 so much more interesting.
Hear hear
Perez looked and sounded incredibly relaxed and circumspect…… not a bad frame of mind if you are Max’s team mate Peter ? Alonso NEVER disappoints does he….. something George will consider from now on 😉
Thanks for sharing Peter.
Max's onboard is honestly crazy to watch. The RB20 looks like it is on rails thru the essess.
still McLaren was faster there, insane.
Actually I thought that was not the cleanest lap. Felt like in the last chicane the tires gave up and he had a bit of understeer.
@@cherryblossunn
That's the set up, te car (as usual) still has more understeer at the beginning of the year.
@@cherryblossunn That's exactly what Max said as well.. The tyres gave up a bit to much, which is why he felt the lap was not perfect..
Perez was faster until 130r.
Super informative and concise
Your channel adds another dimension to our favourite sport Peter, thank you so much !!
Hi Peter, great timing, I'm all agog. I hope youcre well and enjoying yr weekend.
14:00 You forgot that Daniel missed 2 free practices. That's why I think the difference with Yuki isn't too bad.
What's the excuse for the previous races then?
@@andrewbragg504 hater detected
@@sweetr333 no it's just I know a driver in downfall when I see one
Appreciate the video mr. Windsor
Alonso’s times are Bizzare. If he’s really laying down these lap times surely that’s a podium finish at least. SIANZ is also quite fast but it looks like Max might be keeping his cards to his chest doesn’t want the competition to know his actual pace
I agree. crazy laptimes on the hards. A bit of degradation though. I did read somewhere the mediums don't really have a pace advantage over the hards here, but still... Remember Red Bull also struggled with pace in Melbourne. And Perez seems quicker than Max if we look at long runs...Curious for tomorrow.
Sainz
Good video and analysis! Impressed by Yuki! 😊👍 Enjoy the race tomorrow…
Nicely done Peter!
Was waiting for this ...
Against Verstappen. This wonderboy do iT every time . He is phenomenal.
I saw MSC and auto thought of Michael
Thanks Peter, the analysis and clarity of your comments are much appreciated. You do not use phrases like "23 year old" does this and "driver with 35 points" does that. Is the reason that they do not know the names of the drivers. Your 77 year old fan.
What has been going on with Chalres? Or did something get into Sianz? If I didn't know any better I would think Sianz was the number one driver.
He hasn’t figured out how to manage his tires , at least that’s what it seems to be for me
Sainz has to push hard in order to score a ride for next year. Charles is signed for the next few years. I'd call it hunger on both of their parts. Carlos is wondering where his next meal will come from so he's packing in the calories while he can. Charles on the other hand, doesn't feel he's going to starve anytime soon.
@vinster8884 all very good points. I just watched qualifying again and I heard Charles radio message and he didn't sound too happy with the car set up as well.
Something was up. He was in pit when everyone were doing first q3 laps, came out between, and in pit when the 2nd laps were being done
@@irishRocker1he only had one set of soft tyres because he used two in q1 due to risk of not getting into q2. The others had two sets
Love the music!
Jenson used to be so smooth through the esses. Had some of the best throttle control.
I miss the banshee v10s and screaming v8s…
Yeah his driving was different to a lot of other drivers. Very smooth. He was great on tyres in changing conditions. Hulk ain't too bad either..
He was sometimes a joy to watch. 2011 - blew the redbulls away.
Means and standard deviations of fuel run times and speed traps would help.
Even though this is another predictable season (regarding who will win), I’m enjoying seeing other drivers fight for different reasons.
Sainz is fighting to secure a new great contract.
Perez is fighting to keep his seat.
Lewis is fighting to keep his legacy in tact before the big move to Ferrari.
George is fighting to prove himself as the new No 1.
Max is fighting for a 4th title whilst blocking out a lot of noise within his dysfunctional workplace.
Yuki is fighting for Honda and his own pride.
Ricciardo is fighting a losing battle.
The list goes on.
Hey Peter, just listened your talk on Inside Line podcast,, loved your insight,, especially, being a DR fan, your thoughts on where Daniel is at the moment,, I think you're spot on when you said he lost his racers edge when he the best team,Red Bull, for more money at Renault,, as you noted, his career as an F1 driver and winner has certainly been on a downward projectory ever since,,, shame really......😊
Checo P2 and Lando P3. max has nothing to worry about going into turn 1. you'd bet your house on him leading the first lap
Chéco will be aggressive if he take a good start, mark my words.
Chances of both crashing in first turn 😅
Spain 2016 reloaded pls
Lando is not going to push his luck. He needs a ride on Max’s jet after the race.
@@B-kl8vj He hasn't the bottle to take on Max as we saw last year.
Peter how many inches is that around that entire lap on the delta between 1-2-3...............lap times
I'm wondering how much race pace that new ductwork will provide for RedBull
I love how Peter alway talks about Oscar as potentially better than Lando when Lando is only one year older and is still improving. Especially as Oscar does the holy grail of short corners.
A truism only when drivers all drive the same car as some cars are slow if driven in that way because of their design. drivers have to adapt. Lando last year outqualified Oscar but he was not at his best and Oscar started to close the gap. Oscar needed to improve his race pace. Today Lando outqualified Oscar convincingly and to be fair Peter said he drove well but then made out that Oscar was working on race pace and not qualifying like Lando was in FP3. First I have no evidence that this was the case as I watched the team live commentary and Oscar was only two places behind at the end of FP3 also on soft tyres. Oscar is a great driver with lots of potential but Lando is a proven star and nothing tells me that he is going to relinquish his team leader status any time soon or even at all.
Do I bother getting up for this one?
That is a very fair assessment regarding Mercedes. Many others are talking about how much Mercedes has improved since last year's Suzuka. The real comparison is how much they have gained compared to the other teams, not only to themselves.
Lance Stroll is 🐐
💩
Lmao that piece of garbage indeed is the goat
A literal goat ...Yes
But compensating greatly with his smooth speaking voice and sparkly personality. A man with passion. /S
What's the significance of speed trap speeds?
Ease of Overtake ability with DRS, DRS boost level/ability
Look out for Lando at turn 1!
Peter needs to consider that taking "short corners" doesn't work with every car or even every track. Really don't get the emphasis he places on that.
Worth mentioning Ocon, 2 Q2 with that donkey of a car is impressive, 4-0 with Gasly (one of the fastest driver of the grid over one lap) in qualifying.
What is wrong with Williams? Any body?
Referring to the remark that was made about Lewis Hamilton and George Russel, as if SLH would have been happy to qualify in front of George for once. The focus of SLH has never been another driver but always to win and confer those wins into a championship. That is still the focus and for that he needs a good, well balance car with pace, just like Max has at the moment. As Mercedes is able to improve the car we will see the gap btw SLH and George get bigger, as it did last year.
exactly👏. he’s said finishing anything but 1st and winning races doesn’t mean much when you’ve won 7/8 wdcs. so highly doubt he’s jumping for joy at qualifying 7th ahead of george in 9th.
Imagine calling him SLH unironically 😂
The two behind max are usually poor off the start, but if all 3 through Carlos get a great launch Max could be in a lot of pressure early especially if he ends up off line through the esses, it is quite possible we could see a 3 into 1 on Sunday at the beginning..only time will tell..
Tough session but we will be up early tomorrow to support Ferrari each & every lap 🙌 Race pace looks good so, keep pushing team, tomorrow we'll be better 💪 ❤💪🏽 💚🤍❤ Forza Ferrari! 💚🤍❤
other than and Max and couple others, the rest are woeful. compare this to prost or senna ....partictukarly prost....so much neater and so much more gentle and rotate
The tactics in the race have seemed to improve in japan for Ferrari....is this because the team tacticians are now experienmenting with new new Ai software on their analytics software ?
Those long runs look interesting. Max seems one of the slowest top runners, but I can’t imagine that having seen qualifying. With all the different strategy options it will be interesting tomorrow!
Hardly means anything, Hamilton is also often slower than Russell in simulations yet...
@@quentinhirschfeld9382 Well, you were right! Sometimes those runs are a bit hard to read, cause of different fuel loads and engine modes.
I think Merecedes engined cars have a PU deficit in some form. Yes Aston and McLaren are faster then Mercedes but they are slower than RBR. Since Ferrari has the best PU at least in terms of HP numbers, time to time it beats RBR. It is very obvious to me Mercedes missed something in 2022 engine regulations. It seems to me the new fuel creates efficiency and heat problems. Now they try to compensate the deficit.
How is it possible that the engine froze in 2021 and yet it's still being used until 2025? Back in 2021, Mercedes was much more competitive compared to Red Bull.
Does anyone know what Windsor generally thinks of Michael Schumacher? He’s hardly ever mentioned him or referenced him in his videos.
likely pro-British bias.
@@Count.Dracula46 But that's like a quarter of the grid lol
He believe he's quite similar to Prost, Max and Lewis in terms of technique.
@@Count.Dracula46Remind me what nationality Peter is 😉
ask him yourself in chat before his next live stream and he will answer your question first
How many of the pit crew will be double-checking Max's brakes ?
2024: 4:57 10:53 12:00 14:41 18:08
Sta: 12:00
0:00 "MSC" Peter's gone back by 20 years! As much as I wish Schumacher was still on the grid, MVS put it on pole, not MSC!
Lewis had better sectors than Alonso yet was out qualified. Lewis couldn’t put a lap together? Assuming the times came from different laps.
Mad Max is the lead sled dog, what else is new?. Checo needs to try harder. McLaren's Lando Norris was the big surprise, then Carlos Sainz (don't cry for me, Ferrari) and Fernando Alonso.
Alonso 297 on H, full fuel.
S3 is a killer for Ferrari, definitely going to be an exploitable gap in the race!
quite sure they had different fuel levels. No way Ferrari pulls such a gap on RB in such a short time. I expect Max to still cruise at the front unless him and Checo take each other put first lap. Lets not forget the Ferrari's got a whole lot of work to do as well.
Normal service has resumed!
Stroll by name Stroll by nature
Aston Martin realy needs a better second driver. With Lance they never end up high in te constructors. Exit Lance please!!!
As always speaking, in favor of who sends him the yellow envelopes.
Sure would love a spritz of rain during the race.
A spritz?
Would love to know if you know of ANY struggling driver blaming their performance on the chassis that has actually had a significant turnaround in form. To me it’s always the death-knell of a drivers career when all they have left to point to is the chassis.
Schumacher dominance 2 hands full front row lockouts.
Max dominance one had full front row lockouts.
Mercedes dominance 86!!! front row lockouts
The fact bottas won the gp in 2019 says a lot. He's not bad but that merc was clearly on another level
Again Hamilton shows us his brilliance in moving teams. He did in 2012 as soon as McLaren started to fall & after they literally fell off a cliff & is just slowly getting back.
Now look at Mercedes. He's done it again. They are barely holding on for life. After he leaves I reckon they are going to fall even more.
Ou really feel the energy behind those drivers, it's not only talent, they're natural leaders.
That situation in ‘12 was very similar to this year. McLaren weren’t offering him him a long term contract he wanted, just as Merc wouldn’t now. Lewis and McLaren weren’t in a great place. Lewis had spoken out against the team’s performance and even posted confidential data on social media to prove it wasn’t his fault. Much like this year his hand was kind of forced.
Norris was really strong in S1 as well.
But he lost a lot in S3.
It seems the Mclaren is not fast on corner exits and in a straight line.
It will be very interesting tomorrow for Mclaren, Ferrari and Perez.
I think we all know Max is just going to dissapear into the distance.
Nor was 7th in S2
That's where he lost time
Not sure! Long runs were interesting, could be a close race!
I'm really worried about Charles, when you start making comments like this you start losing yourself.
Carlos is really chewing up his confidence.
This is not the first time it's happened, this sort of swing in performance between sainz and Charles always happens, it's been a running trend in recent years that sainz tends to start the season better than charles. He'll be fine, he's been in even worse situations and still came out on top. The good news is that he isn't a million miles away.
@@unathimbatha
I'm not worried about the gap, its his comments and the fact it happen at Suzuka aswell.
Yea Leclerc is still faster on natural talent but Sainz is more technical & has more self belief.
Leclerc is extremely hard on his self & lacks confidence. His brilliance usually comes from his immense raw talent
@@quentinhirschfeld9382 as a person that's followed leclerc closely for a long while now, those sort of comments don't alarm me anymore cause he also bounces back from it.
@@NicotineRosberg I don't think it's a matter of technical ability or skill, it's a mental thing and not in the self-belief sort of mental, because I think charles leclerc has immense self-belief and confidence, carlos just has nothing to lose now, whether he beats or doesn't beat leclerc it doesn't matter anymore. It's a weight off his shoulders.
Perez was close indeed. But again, both Q3 laps from Max would have put him on pole.
As disappointing as its been for ricciardo this year, hasn't it been worse for both stroll and to an extent zhou? I like zhou but he should be progressing and beating his teammate like yuki imo.
i highly doubt lewis is ‘excited’ over qualifying 7th after winning 7/8 world championships
How is Peter Windsor not an official F1, or Sky or C4 pundit? His knowledge and clarity on every run is outstanding. I've been watching for 30 years.
Because of his USF1 history/scam.
Mercedes only did well because it is cold.
Dry your eyes mate ffs 😂
They'll be on pole in Belgium. I live in Belgium.
@@Elaba_ I hope you're right... love your optimism
6 100ths behind. Perez. Could have had pole. Missed opportunity
Perez had that lap made me wake up at 230am.
Max not even close to 100% and still fastest.
He'll romp away with the race...any action (such as it is) will be well behind him.
That doesnt sound boring at all
Leclerc confidence seems to be shaken a bit.
Maybe it’s Hamilton coming and second guessing himself and his abilities.
He better get back on top of it because if he doesn’t , Lewis will eat him for lunch.
Hamilton will be on the podium tomorrow. Don't be surprised if it is on the top step as I believe there will be drama with the Redbulls.
This comment didn’t age well…. at all. Wishful thinking I guess.
It's a travesty that Aston again privileges Stroll for the upgrades.
They did that to make sure the upgrades actually worked.
@@Andre_The_Millennial
They always give the new package to Stroll, something shady
Why don't we put Max in the Williams and Albon in the Red Bull then we will suddenly see Max's gentle and patient inputs become extremely ragged!
Blablabla another Max hater….aka LH fanboy…
Charles was disappointing
They shoould not have got rid of Carlos. Half a billion to replace Carlos..sigh...

He's been amazing also in 2020, 2021 (very unlucky that year), 2022 (super unlucky), up until last year.
There's something wrong with his mindset, that guy has the softest inputs and amazing race-craft when he's in the zone.

Ferrari does have a strong race pace than RedBull a challenge for the win maybe possible.

Alonso in a red bull , ferrari or maclaren would have been pole , or , all credit to max , second
There is a 20 mile speed limit in Wales waiting for Hamilton if he would like to retire here soon!
G Brussell .. Mercedes version of Logan Sargeant... the Difference is ....Logan Takes the Blame
I think Logan is trying his best but is it?
How is it russell fault they sent him out? Not to mention Lewis was on the other side if him opposite of Oscar. Haters going to hate..
Mercedes found 1.2s not half a second. Red bull found half a second.
I sometimes think Peter can't Google for data
Not a good day by oscar. Looks like mclaren didnt set up his car well to not finish at least top 4.
Lots of praise for Max but watch his steering view of the car.. No need for any corrections or any understeer.. Jus the car so hooked up at every corner.. For Perez to be right there with max says everything about Adrian Newey design of this Mega car.. Consider that.. Praise shud be for lando and alonso.. Probably if Alonso in a redbull he will be on pole for the race. U can certainly bet your bottom dollar on that..
Look at the difference of Checo and Max steering…. THEN YOU’ll see that Max creates that himself with his set up and tools and his feeling in the car….. The car is difficult to drive…it looks easy in Max’ hands
I hardly ever actually watch f1 anymore, but never miss one of these 😆
Lewis will surprise a lot of people tomorrow
