Mercedes W164 and X164 Navigation Removal and Repair (Restart Loop / Navigation DVD not Detected)

In this video I am showing how to remove and repair a NTG 2.0 navigation in a Mercedes Benz ML W164 or GL X164. The most common problems that plague these navigation units are a constant reboot or the navigation DVD not being read properly, which results in a constant "please insert navigation dvd" message. If the steps in the guide a followed and you are experiencing any of these two issues, your problems should be solved. Please keep in mind that this will help only if the navigation unit itself is the issue. As Mercedes vehicles from this generation use MOST instead of CAN BUS, there are also other failure points, which may foster the reboot issue in particular (CD changer, amplifier, etc...) Still, the information provided in this video pertains to also any other Mercedes navigation unit from this generation. The download link for the NTG 2.0 navigation maps (Europe) found below.

Great video! Since purchasing my 2006 E320 CDI, I’ve gotten this Comand loop happening occasionally. I know since purchasing my car that the navigation has not worked, and I’m wondering if I’m encountering a similar issue? I don’t think my software was updated and from what I understand, finding update CD’s is very expensive ($200+).
Besides fixing the unit I’ve read that you can bypass the fiber optic loop with a cable. For the navigation unit, where does this exist for the cable to be inserted?

Well done. This is a clear & concise video. Have you ever experienced a command unit like your one, where the unit powers up OK, but none of the buttons seem to work. All of the buttons are not responding. It is somehow stuck in CD mode and it plays without any problems. The only way I can control the volume is via the steering wheel controls. The wheel volume control on the command unit also does not work.
Your help will be appreciated.
Many of these early Becker units were prone to internal component failure, which would result in all kinds of issues. You can start with pulling the fuse for the command and checking if after reinstalling it will work.
I pulled it out as you suggested and replaced the fuse. Its now back to normal. Thank you :)

Cool video, thank you! Could you please tell, which parts should be cleaned from dust especially? In the video I hardly see any dust inside the radio. Or is the dust mainly inside the fan itself? Thank you
The dust can be pretty much everywhere. Usually it is in the fan and the PCB. However, the lens is the most important part to clean. when it gets dirty you the navigation disc that is inserted will not be read properly.
@@EndlessMotorWorks Thanks for your reply! I will give it a try. My radio’s constantly restarting and I can hear lens motor noises with no disc inside maybe the reason is indeed behind the dirty lens.
@@ceejey Be aware that these early NTG 2.0 units weren't really made that well and also had issues with the board inside. Components on it would fail in a way that would require the entire unit to be replaced. Such problems are less common in the NTG 2.5.
How did you clean the fan my navigation is not working and when I pull the DVD out it's very hot !!!
When playing DVDs are supposed to get relatively warm. After all they do spin quite fast so I wouldn't worry about it too much. Still, the fan you can clean with compressed air. If you don't have access to an air compressor, small cans with compressed air are often sold hardware stores or pc hardware stores, as they are used to clean up keyboards, laptops and other electronics.

You mean if you open and clean up a Mercedes Audio 20? Yes, it will probably work out. Those tend to accumulate dust inside of them as well. Yet again, I don't know what exactly is wrong with your unit.

Здравей, имам проблем със самия юнит. Забива на Мерцедес логото и не стартира,но музиката върви с бекграуда. Ако го почистя само дали ,ще се оправи ? Аз съм с модела който е с мърдащия дисплей за да се покаже входа за двд-то.
Може да пробваш. Ако не стане ще трябва или на ремонт да го носиш или друг втора употреба.

This navigation is the same for x164 and w165 ?thanks
The short answer is yes, the W164 and X164 use the same dashboard and the exact same navigation unit. That being said, in essence it is the same NTG 2 that is put in any Mercedes of this generation, for example the W169, W245, W203, W209 and the W463. The only difference between the units is the front facia plate, which is different so that the unit can fit in different dashboards. The components inside of the NTG 2 itself are exactly the same.

Can you help me? I cant find my aux port in my Mercedes Ml 320 CDI w164 2006.
Not every ML W164 has a Aux port from the factory. It was an option. If you do have it it will be in the glovebox on the left

@@Barni0727 The Bluetooth in these vehicles is very old and quite picky in terms of phones it wants to connect to. You also can't play music through this Bluetooth, it is meant for telephony .
@@EndlessMotorWorks But there is many videos on UA-cam that peoples can connect and play music with Bluetooth. I can only play music with aux or bluetooth? Or there is another method?

I don't think there is.
If yours does not start, make sure it is connected to the fibre optic cable. I first thought my unit had a blown fuse because it wouldn't boot outside the car, but once I connected the optical cables, it booted just fine.

Ти си прецени дали да го бракуваш. Може да се занесе някой да го погледне първо, че дори и на старо работещи такива навигации вървят доста скъпо.
Колега дали може да сменя само екрана от такава навигация на такава на която екрана й пада напред
Не съм отварял навигация която е с падащ екран и няма как да ти отговоря със сигурност.

Just replace it with new Android head unit. It has more features.
If it can be fixed, why spend hundreds on a chinese android unit. If there was no fix for this issue or the Command was completely dead, in that case, what you are suggesting probably would have been the best and easiest solution.
@@EndlessMotorWorks like I said that Chinese Android head unit has more features. It's just a suggestion anyway to save you from trouble of fixing an outdated unit.

@@wahristklar2992 No tools required. Once the two screws are removed, you just grab on the trim and pull on it. There are some clips that hold it in.
