Also, spoiler warning for Dragon Quest 5/Your Story... do I need to give a spoiler warning for a game that came out in 1992? Ah, well.
This video is almost 2 months in the making, between replaying the game and finishing the DQ7 preservation project... I've certainly had my hands full lately.
But I'm glad I got it done, managed to get all the footage I needed and edit it well and make a video in 4K! I also can't thank everyone enough for all the support on my channel this past month, it's really been the main motivation to keep putting more content out

Once again, I gotta reiterate I do LOVE the DQ movie, and although I've critiqued the ending ALOT... I've kinda recently grown to find it endearing again 😅 But anyway, hope you enjoy this video! DQ5 is one of my favourite games of all time so this one was really fun to make ❤
Guy from Argentina here. Dragon Quest V for SNES was my childhood. Came across Dragon Quest V (and DQ as a whole) in the year 99-00's by complete coincidence. I had a Super Famicom (which was a super rare thing here compared to let's say a Sega Megadrive) and while looking for some place that had games for it found a store with a few SNES games. And there it was: THE ORIGINAL, japanese, in box, unopened with manual and all DQV. How did it get to my country? I have no idea. It atracted me immediately because of the box art (which back then I had no idea it was Toriyama and I feel like an idiot because in South America everyone loves Dragon Ball) so I bought it for $15. It came with a catch tho: The internal battery didn't work for some reason (and I was a kid so I didn't know I could change it). I played it day and night. Of course I didn't know japanese but I started learning with the game and the manual, internet wasn't a thing either so I had to learn by just playing and it didn't save so I started the game anew every day. But none of that stopped me from enjoying it and making it my favourite game forever. Sad thing is I had to sell that game a few years later, but at least I kept the manual and still have it.
Dragon Quest content creator are so rare, so I'm quite happy that my weird algorithm recommanded me your video ahah. Also, it's quite sad that Dragon Quest 4-6 are not available on modern console (except mobile and emulation).

You skep a great scene in the movie, when Luca tries to run from Kon and Slon in the snow. I can't wait for Dragon Quest V remake for Nintendo Switch.
What I found interesting about Hero watching George childhood in the game.
Is that time was stripped away from, seeing him experiencing the loss of his innocences and living that tragedy again as an adult is really painful.
Time flows but he can't move on and witnessed years of his life go by while stuck as a statue. Never getting to experience happiness or connect with others.
Considering Akira Toriyama is the same guy who wrote Future Trunks backstory for the special. It brings a sense of existential dread and new meaning to the games story.
Your Story is so fantastic, especially the ending. The did such an amazing job with the Film.
13:09 - I ended up choosing Debora on my playthrough of Dragon Quest V. And yeah, the wedding happens on a ship of all places. That tells you how nuts it can be. And yes, Debora can be a bit demeaning but she does develop. Honestly. Plus I got to grind my butt with my party as I am at the end.
I have never played a dragon quest game (I owned 8 because a friend left it at my house and never got it, but my PS2 had broken years before that and I eventually traded it in), but you're hilarious and I'm here for whatever content you want to make.

The only thing I missed in the movie is the hero's daughter. That is big loss for the story,
Besides that I liked it a lot.
But, to be honest, I realized watching your video that I forgot a lot of key details from the game's original story, so I appreciate a lot the extensive side by side comparison you made.
I love this video! And I adore you for doing Dragon Quest content. There just isn't enough good DQ content outside of let's plays and streams. I have loved DQ since I was a little kid playing on my NES the original Dragon Warrior. It always saddened me how obscure outside of Japan this series is.
This video is pretty darn spot on too, I feel like the movie was serviceable but it's hard to convey every little thing from the game. The game does not have a whole lot of story compared to later years in video game history, but it's all the little details and NPC interactions that really make it all come together IMO.

14:12 time actually passes during the events in Dragon Quest V, not just in the timeskips, so the hero is 18 by the time he reunites with Bianca as an adult.
20:12 funny enough, Bjorn uses the same sound effect library sound as was used for Bowser back in the N64 days

For the Nera recognizing the Hero part; I haven’t played the DS version in a long time; but iirc in the PS2 remake the Hero and Pankraz do encounter Nera/Flora and her dad as they’re leaving the ship at the very beginning of the game
I can see why, in theory, Takashi Yamazaki is a good choice as director for Your Story. His films tend toward nostalgia even when dealing with heavier themes.
It was cute to use the game footage at the start of the film but quite jarring for an audience unfamiliar with the original game. I think that heavier use of montage, more emphasis on incidental story action, as with the DQ games, the little vignettes are the best parts, would have gone a long way to make the film feel more coherent.
The message that people's actions are meaningful and important not matter the person could be conveyed without the film's twist, which, honestly makes it hard to go back to. A straighter, more melodramatic and thoughtful adaptation would have been great. As it is, this is a curio.

Only DQ I have played is 11 and I have yet to finish it. But I really enjoy your videos, makes me wonder if I should check out some of the other games in the series.
Definitely worth playing the other games, 5 and 8 are some of the best games I've ever played :')
@@GronyaQuest Definitely going to pick up 5! Trying to decide on the PS2 or DS version to run. Seems like the fan translation for the ps2 might be the best way to go. 🤔
The ds version was the only one I played so im biased but i literally cant imagine choosing anyone but Deborah. Nera is very cookie cutter sweet feminine princess type and i found her very boring, and while Bianca makes the most sense I thought they were better off as friends. Deborah is very volatile but when the other girls were very generic her personality stood out to me and her dialogue is actually really funny. Especially later on when a npc conversation after the pregnancy event infers that the Hero is actually really into her ordering him around lmao. And in act 3 with the kids she actually has really sweet heartfelt dialogue all the time since she's mellowed out.
This is a super interesting take, I never really thought about how unique she is and I didnt know she had character development in the game, I'm definitely gonna do a run with marrying debora to see all the party chat dialogue

Honestly, Dr. Agon is a lot stronger in the film, I think, and I do have a bit of bias there with how much I disliked the Ned Flanders bit from the game lol. Least favorite bit of the movie is still the ending, of course, I've grown a bit softer on it, but it's still just...well cringey lol.
Totally agree, he's way cooler in the film and i like how he plays a larger role. I continue to have a love/hate relationship with the ending LMAO

It's ok adaptation when you watch it but those last ten minutes turned me off and i never bothered to rewatch it since like i get what they were trying to do but pulling a swerve for an adaption of one of the most beloved DQ games and for its first Animated Movie it's such a stupid thing to do given how popular DQ is japan, I'm sure everyone would've been fine with the adaptation just having a ending like the game and with a lot of cut characters and villains but alas we got stuck with an ending with the writers telling us to touch grass and the HERO said "Nah"

DQ5 is my favorite in the series but i didnt care watching the movie bc of the pixar-like design while they can use Akira toriyama stlye and be really faithful to the game
The movie had better character design. Look, I'm sorry the guy's deceased, we all have to go sometime, but he was a one-trick pony when it came to drawing people: Angry foreheads. And if you say the series died with him, you're wrong, and you're allowing the series to die because it's not allowed to change or grow.
