Epson 5050UB vs BenQ HT5550 | Out-of-the-Box 4K Projector Shootout!

  • This video demonstrates the capabilities out-of-the-box of the Epson 5050UB and the BenQHT5550. Both are fantastic "4K" HDR projectors and the bottom line is that buyers are going to really enjoy each of them with their own unique strengths. My personal bottom line is that for sports and gaming I prefer the Epson and for 4K HDR and SDR movies I prefer the BenQ. But you can't go wrong with either!
    I have found settings that make both projectors look even better! In the video I refer to the Epson 5050UB as having plenty of pop and brightness, but a bit oversaturated in it's factory picture modes. Fellow AVSForum member, Alaric, has posted these fantastic settings for the Epson 5050UB that really help to create an even more natural picture quality. Here is the link to his Google sheet: docs.google.co...
    Another AVSForum member, Kraine, is the editor for PassionHomeCinema over in France. He also shared his settings for the HT5550 that really helped to find the best balance of brightness, color, and contrast. In Color Temperature menu: Red gain: 101, Green gain: 99, Blue gain: 103, Red offset: 246, Green offset: 256, Blue offset 265, Brightness 45, Contrast: 55

    in this comparison, I’m lost when people prefer the Benq, the epson image is so natural in every way, the yellow cloud and yellow skin tones on the benq take me back in the 90s projectors.

    I have the TW9300 (5040UB), and in my opinion there is no way you can accurately compare the HDR image if using the Epson in Natural mode. The filter needs to be engaged, using either Cinema or Digital Cinema modes - especially as it was stated that the BenQ automatically adjusts its mode.
    If the HDR image was found to be almost comparable in this review, it leads me to think the Epson would have surpassed the BenQ if used correctly.
    Also, the filter is the only way to achieve rec BT.2020 (for HDR), where this Epson rates at 100% accuracy. So all of the comments about over-saturation of colour would have been void if only the filter was used.
    I know I'm sounding over-critical here, but in actual fact I appreciate the review.

    I recently picked up a 5040UB on sale seeing as the HT5550 would not work for my screen size/distance. I will say that HDR was underwhelming before I got my hands on some tweaks done by Oledurt and Dave Harper. They made a SIGNIFICANT improvement. I feel like the 5050UB may need the same tweaks/calibration to really help it seeing as the BenQ has what seems to be really good auto tone mapping. Hey man. great video. To be a better comparison i would say have the same projectors on the same plane or elevation. Angle of incidence is a factor when dealing with an A/B comparison. I love my epson and I plan on buying the 5050. Inherently, DLP will have a more color saturation. 3 chip LCD shines in every other aspect of projector performance. I did something similar with optoma and epson. BenQ does an amazing job at bringing 4K HDR to the public at a lower cost than the competitors. if people are budget conscious the benQ is a great choice. Great video. You nailed all the key points. Awesome Video. So glad I found it.
    I've been wanting a real life close up representation of Epson's pixel shift technology.
    The screen door effect is apparent, but as my screen is only 120", it will not be so much so for me.
    Regarding the color of the two, the BenQ I believe has a more accurate representation of color. The Epson like you said is saturated, though that is what I prefer. As I like a more poppy picture with high color levels, it just increases the overall wow factor and goes well with such a huge screen.

It was really funny when he brought up text to compare and when he panned over to the Epson he got closer to the screen which would clearly show more pixels the closer you get to it. The thing that everyone seems to be missing is that the Epson can be toned down to match the natural look of the BenQ. It's doubtful that the BenQ can be improved to meet the output of the Epson without the expense of noise on the screen.

    • @ScottsTechandStuff
      @ScottsTechandStuff  5 років тому +3

      It sure can! The out of box PQ definitely gave the BenQ the leg up in this specific comparison. Maybe I'll have to do round 2 with calibrated comparisons? We'll see. Bottom line is that these are both amazing projectors.

    • @hazchem1
      @hazchem1 5 років тому +1

      @@ScottsTechandStuff I'd never do a comparison on the PQ just out the box. It's amazing how much better that you can improve the picture quality on all projectors with some tinkering (if you know what you're doing). As I said, when you start to push the limits of any projector with too much of the wizardry turned on then it can be at the expense of other aspects of the PQ. You may indeed find that when you start to try and push the brightness up and increase color depth on the BenQ that it begins to affect skin tones and dark levels etc. It's a fair point I'm raising. Both PJs are indeed excellent, but the extra bucks may be better spent on the Epson, which is the better PJ IMO. However, Round 2 would be interesting if you care to spend the time with a Color Meter to get the best out of each PJ.

      Unless you play games on it. The Benq input lag would be a gaming issue, the Epson has one of the lowest input lags. $500 cheaper for such a great projector though is excellent.

    Why would the Epson not be put in digital cinema for an HDR comparison?

    • @ScottsTechandStuff
      @ScottsTechandStuff  5 років тому +6

      I mostly stuck to out of the box settings without any filters on. Most of the people I speak to prefer the images without the filters that 'Digital Cinema' places over both. I figured that is the way that most people would compare. In hindsight it would have been easy to quickly put both projectors into their filter modes. Oh well. I will be more thoroughly reviewing the 5050UB in the coming weeks and months so I will definitely speak to that. I have a calibrated mode with the filter on the Epson. The hit on darkness is too much for my liking, however it does produce an exceptional image!! The image quality on both of these projectors are so good. If you have a smaller screen around 100" You can make really good use of the filters on each.

      Yeah i also feel the epson should have been in digital cinema, the benq auto detects hdr and changes settings, so it’s not the same. It’s just not what you would see at home if you got the epson. No one uses the same settings for both sdr and hdr!

    I had to exchange my Epson 5050 due to the right side of the screen was not engaging the 4K enhancement as intended (which left me seeing the pixels easily) and the left side was a little blurry, but pixels were hard to see. And after the exchange, it's hard pressed to see any pixels. I used the same (lizard eye) example as on this video and it's nowhere near the visual pixels you see in this video. Do you think your unit is a faulty unit?

    Great review. How much better is the benq 5550 vs the 3550? and how loud are they I have a benq at the moment and its easily my biggest complaint. That 5550 has a much better throw so I could hide the projector further back in my theater which is a selling point to me.

    At 8:14 the color of river floor is red(right) as opposed to natural for benq (left). I think benq is not bright or gives color pop but projects accurate colors. Any thoughts ?

    • @ScottsTechandStuff
      @ScottsTechandStuff  5 років тому

      Yes - the BenQ in ins Cinema mode is more color accurate and closer to the colors that the video was mastered in by the director. Each projector has modes to create a more saturated and vivid image but out of the box the BenQ wins in color reprorudction. Not to say the Epson can't be calibrated to get there. The Epson actually can cover a bit more of the BT2020 color space... it just takes some fiddling and calibration to get there while the BenQ is great out of box. I would say the Epson reaches 80% of its potential of the box, while the BenQ is already about 97% of the way there.

    Thanks Scott, I really appreciate the side-by-side. When you say that it's on the Nvidia Shield, so it's not in HDR is that because the shield cannot output HDR? I'm also noticing that on the BenQ it seems to have a yellow / green tint on the whites of the clouds. I was never able to achieve good white balance on my w1070. The whites on the HT 5550 also looks a little dingy to me . What do you think as an in-person vs. recorded comparison?

    • @ScottsTechandStuff
      @ScottsTechandStuff  5 років тому

      Lenny Gee The shield TV can certainly output HDR. It is just that the UA-cam app does not output HDR. It is weird since UA-cam Doesn’t do HDR on the Premier android TV device.
      BHT 5550 doesn’t produce dingy whites to Mayeye. I also reviewed the TK 800 and that has a clear slice on the color wheel. That produces very bright pure white light. The HT 5550 is not as white as that but I have never had the thought come to my mind that the whites are not white. If that makes sense.

    very nice review, thanks for all of the hard work that was surely involved! looking at the comparison i see the epson as the clear winner, pretty much across the board... in fact i recently returned a benq lk953st 4k hdr because it looked a lot like what i'm seeing from the ht5550 in your vid.... i'm not a deep black snob, infact i'm willing to sacrifice some black for brightness, but i just couldn't deal with the lk953st's poor black performance, nor the manual lens adjustment... also, i wasn't a big fan of benq's hdr implementation, and the fact that you set it and leave, without the ability to do much of anything once it's on (it disables a lot of image control settings) was a deal breaker as well.

    weird to find a video with both of my last projectors(was YT suggested - didnt search for it). Ive had this Benq for 3 weeks until i saw my friends Epson 5040ub and the blacks were a lot better. Returned Benq and got 5050ub and there is no comparison imho. Maybe , like you mentioned, colors are not super accurate but they are a lot punchier and will put a smile on your face. Blacks are inky while on Benq they were more grayish. didnt really notice any detail difference - both were sharp enough althouth not to the level of my old Sony 285 or my neighbours JVC NX7 - both native 4k

  • @m_thebox
    @m_thebox 3 роки тому

    Clear to see Benq is the winner. TI DLP is the choice in the cinemas over the 3LCD. Also, the fake saturated colours (which you can't get rid with calibration) make the epson cartonish and benq more Cinematic. I don't watch black levels (epson's pros) only but this is respectable on the Benq too. Pixel shifting x 2 lacks resolution, and yes resolution matters too, otherwise we would be watching 720p instead

I currently have an Epson 3100 rated at 2600 lumens (same as 5050ub) and projecting 110 inches, but the 3D is too dark to enjoy in movies with very dark scenes. Thank you for this valuable demonstration. Truly helpful. So the Epson does not do shifting which leads to 8 mil. pixels ..instead its more like a 1440p? Also.. that low input lag maintains to 4k@60Hz, or just 1080p? Honestly, is pretty hard to decide between these.. but that low input lag on Epson is freaking amazing...I mean you can play shooters (not on a super competitive level) but still...is super close to a reasonable 20 ms... It also has a better contrast ratio.
    When it comes to black levels... I guess it depends on your screen as well, so... might just grab the Benq and save for a better screen tbh. (unless you are gaming.

The 5550 was unfortunately just oto high input lag for how much I play games.However, whenever I go back to the HT5550 or HT35550 I am amazed at just how much sharper the image is on the BenQs and makes me really sad that they don't have a lower input lag 4k projector.

A similar comparison is a perfectly capable iPhone 6 vs an iPhone Xs. You can buy an iPhone 6 for about 150 quid these days and the Iphone Xs which is 800-1000. But the sound profile isn't offensive and is a deep whooosh. The BenQ is very similar. Inaudible in its Eco lamp setting and you can hear a deep whoosh in normal mode.
