His technical ability along with singing ability puts him in a class all by himself. Yes, there are other singing drummer that sing and play well, however, in opinion LV feel and pocket was impeccable.
this must be one of the best songs ever... the way everybody kind of seems to get the harmony right when singing "put the load right on me" is never been heard again..... thanks Levon !!
He,s up there now playing in the BIG GIG IN THE SKY WITH ALL THE GREAT,S WHO WE'VE LOST, PLAYING FOR THE BIG MAN AND HIS ANGEL,S. PEACE TO YOU ALL MY FRIEND'S. 🙏✌️😎🏴
Levon wasn’t well in this song, but he played his heart out. This was before lung cancer took his voice. He fought his way back and got his voice back. He won three Grammys after getting his voice back. I love you Levon!
Levi is in God's arms right now I could listen to the weight the song over and over again is so spiritual and the way he does the drums and sing it puts chills in you that he is such a great man
According to "The Weight" entry (way down near the bottom of its long thread) on the huge Band fansite , this performance was from a 1995 AIDS awareness concert at the Ryman, 17 or so years before before Levon's 2012 passing. 1995 was the year he turned 55, and aside from a little graying in his hair and whiskers, he still looks youthful and healthy here, plus being in excellent voice. This was a bit before his pipes turned raspy and his face became gaunt and sharp-featured when his illness kicked in.
❤ Take the Lord for Free. Best words ever!! 🙏🙏 Every one of us can have the Lord for Free. He is just waiting for us to open our Hearts to Him. Makes me cry!!
To all of us who appreciate the qualities of great music, we’ve been blessed to witness this era of phenomenal talents. These greats played and shared their music simply because they loved it. Everything else was just a bonus. Music refreshes the soul.
Wow i listen to so much Music from that era and along with John Fogerty this dude is absolutely one of my favorite Singers out there! The Band is stunning! He looks so happy and plays so good! A true legend to me! Talented, smiling, a musician from his heart. RIP Levon
Great band wasn't born in the 40s or 50s to witness the incredible music that came out in the 60s watched easy rider song was part of the sound track it grew on me I bought the soundtrack because of that song
Wow- Arkansas! I’m from Toronto + have ALWAYS had a love for that part of the U.S. Always picture it being like it was in the movie “Coal Miners Daughter”- while Levon Helm was in as Patsy’s father.
My husband's first after school job was working in a hatchery with Levon's father, Diamond, and another woman in the family. He rode to work with them until he saved enough to buy his first car. We must have had classes together, because I remember Wheeler from junior high.
I sold "The Band's" LPs, many of them, at my music store there, "Pepperland Music", on Market Street. Also played Levon's LPs on our 5 hour Pepperland Album Hour on a local FM station at night. Many Navy sailors from Ingall's came in to buy our concert tickets and music,... which was the Best Ever back then. Every Southerner luved his "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." My uncle Bob was Commander of the USN Blueback sub, built and Commissioned at Ingalls about 15 years before your overhaul. Small world, eh? Still miss Levon.
Just heavenly! God bless Levon- there was such beauty in his beautiful southern voice. It’s always sad to see people getting older. I’m remembering the boys from The Last Waltz in 1978. They started, “The Band”, between 1963-1969, in Toronto with Ronnie Hawkins + started out touring with Bob Dylan. Their 1st live appearance, after touring with Dylan, was at Stone Brook University in the spring of 1969. Later that year they performed with Dylan in the U.K- Isle Of Wight Festival. I always loved Levon Helm + his overall laid back personality. He had an amazing career.
A truly honest band member's music instruments.Whatever happened with this, we have b******* and laugh today.Beautiful people. Then I appreciate you.I love you, Mr. John hot.Mister lavonne hams the weight
No offense, but this is several years before he died. He lost part of his voice in the mid-90s before the final Band album was released, and this is several years before that. His voice here is strong and wonderful.
The world misses that man and his legendary talents
So true he wrote more music than all of you know just a simple drummer a very smart simple drummer
Lol
The world could use some Levon. This song has such a great message. Never met anyone that didn’t like after the first listen. Classic band.
One of the greatest singing drummers of all time.
I'm thinking not "one of" but the.
@@terrymalone1456 Phil Collins and Don Henley rank up there with Levon.
His technical ability along with singing ability puts him in a class all by himself. Yes, there are other singing drummer that sing and play well, however, in opinion LV feel and pocket was impeccable.
Karen carpenter
I agree with all here
No words can really give this performance the justice it deserves!
RIP Levon Helm. Thanks for the music. You are loved. ❤️🎶🙏
this must be one of the best songs ever... the way everybody kind of seems to get the harmony right when singing "put the load right on me" is never been heard again..... thanks Levon !!
I just love hearing Levon singing. He is just Awesome...
GOD BLESS LEVON HELM
God fly his soul🙏
He,s up there now playing in the BIG GIG IN THE SKY WITH ALL THE GREAT,S WHO WE'VE LOST, PLAYING FOR THE BIG MAN AND HIS ANGEL,S. PEACE TO YOU ALL MY FRIEND'S. 🙏✌️😎🏴
Everyone has said it their way............all I can say is that I miss you brother...rest in peace Levon

@ fancypants 509 Throat cancer in his case, but another smoking casualty nonetheless, one of so many in and out of the music business. What a loss!
I love him too. He play with the best cause he was the best ❤❤💓
He had a great voice. And I’ve never heard a bad version of this song. It is a bit of perfection that is timeless.
He's playing this at the same beat as the Band played in the Last Waltz. Rest in Peace, Legend.
The smiles and the stick spin at the end.
The stick spin.
Wow. Legend!
Levon was Southerner He had enough talent to carry the whole band
Robby took all of Levon's stories of the south and wrote them into songs the Band played. Robbie never gave Levon his full due
Your Damn right my friend
Levi is in God's arms right now I could listen to the weight the song over and over again is so spiritual and the way he does the drums and sing it puts chills in you that he is such a great man
One of the best live performances of The Weight ever. Appreciate the boys singing that song like they loved it, they did of course. Levon did to.
There is no forwarding past this song, replaying is typical...... Thanks for the gifts you left us.
Levon Helm. What a wonderful soul.
Big O tribute - special. Thankyou from NZ,
What a awesome individual that sang this song with rhythm beautiful beautiful
This must have been close to the end of his life and the joy he takes in his music is evident right up to the end. What a grin on his face.
This isn't as close to his end as u may think...but his Joy? Yessir!

That is a smile for the ages.
@@howiesmith1504 this song was meant to be sang by an old man, so in that way he kinda grew into it.
A man that never got what he was owed. A great man.
I will always miss Levon Helm, and I will always love this song.
He was mister pocket! His feel was impeccable! You are missed LH. Rest In Peace

DUST & IRON I do also. My favorite music. I think I’m stuck there.
I loved Levon as Jack Ridley in The Right Stuff. He was actually quite an actor too.
Man...how time waits for none of us...this takes me down a distant memory of time and lives lost and gone..
10-4, that kind of talent, is extremely rare these days.
he once said he was a drummer who sang a bit well truth is he was a great drummer who sang great
It's almost like he was a singer who also happened to play drums. Levon was great at both.
Levon did everything g with great heart that's what made Levon Levon
Indeed❤️
A man sang this song on the news the other day the 50th anniversary of Woodstock.
Levon wasn't afraid to change things up a bit. He sang this song with different people and this is the best version by far.
This geezer was one of the greatest..

Levon used to live in Springdale, Arkansas. Where I worked with his little brother.
