Justin I'm fixing up my 2004 Jeep Wrangler and had to change out my torque converter and front oil pump I never dropped a transmission before .your video was spot on I got it back in today and she is running like a charm thanks for such a great video.
Very helpful video my torque converter is shot on mine (2002 Jeep Wrangler TJ.) knowing what I’ve been taught and experienced, any time you have a fill and drain plug, similar to the ones on your transfer case it would be a good idea to loosen the fill before draining fluid so if the fill is stuck or gets stripped out you don’t have a empty transfer case. It’s just a recommendation that I’ve experienced personally

Hey there we just had same car which we chance engine but we just don’t know was there ring between flywheel and torque converter.Do you remember is there supposed to be ring on flywheel nuts
Hey great job guys. Im about to perform this same task. I have an 05 unlimited. I have either a leaking oil pump seal..or a shaft seal...possibly a leaking torque converter (I dont think so though). Nice video. I have to do all of this because my crank position sensor is seized in the bell housing. I found an angle under the jeep with a long screwdriver and I lightly tapped it after spraying it with penetrating oil several times and letting it sit. The sensor started to slowly come out, then all of a sudden the sensor broke from the outer casing and came out. The outside portion of the sensor is stuck in the bell housing. I tried heating the bell housing to see if it would break free but it didn't work. Now I get to do all of this just to remove the damaged sensor and put it all back together and install a new one.

I have the following questions:: 1- How did you get to the top two bellhousing bolts, did you have to lower the transmission a little first? If you did so, did you have to loosen the engine mounts so you wouldn't break them? 2- Did you have to unscrew the exhaust pipe from the engine? Thank you
Yes I did take off the muffler . No reason to loosen the motor mounts . You do not have to lower the transmission much . You sit down behind the trans and use like a 18" extension . When you sit up under the cab you will see all the space between the trans and cab. And you can't lower it to much if you have a 4.0 . The engine will hit the firewall first . I hope this answers your questions .
Justin Vaughan Thanks Justin, I appreciate your prompt reply...It is a 4.0 engine...I suspect I probably won't be able to remove the two upper oil dip stick tube bolts before I lower the transmission!
I think I loosen them first . Don't remember exact order . I do remember it was hard to pull the tube up and out so if you do lower it make sure the tube is not rubbing on any thing that will make it that much harder.
Nice video Justin. I'm also removing a 42rle but of an 06 Dodge Dakota 2WD 3.7 v6 with 195,000 miles. Clutches are shot. I only had to remove the drive shaft. Its hard to see how the dipstick connects into the trans in my setup...I suspect its just one bolt. I also see the dipstick tube mounted to a bracket up at the top of the bell housing that needs removal, like yours. Good luck on the re install. BTW, its freezing here in Maryland and I see you're wearing shorts, ideal weather for auto work.
Yeah the dip stick tube just kind of floats on top of trans and seals with a rubber grommet . I'm in south Louisiana . Snow is rare and the winter temps can go from 30 to 80 in a day
+j. alexander they're not to much you can mess up other than like stripping bolts and things of that nature. The one thing that can really go wrong is dropping the trans and breaking it or hurting yourself so if you go the jack route be carful. Best bet is to get a trans jack.

Great video! I had to drop a new motor in my TJ this weekend. Go the new motor back in and now the trans wont go in gear. I pulled the TC off when I pulled the motor. Assembled everything back as properly as it was before best I can tell. Went ahead and changed trans fluid and filter while doing all that. The linkage is good. I can see the linkage changing the gears on the trans. The fluid is full. All the connections are hooked backup. Checked the transfer case and all good there so its not in neutral on transfer. Doesn't matter what gear I have it in I can push the jeep and its like its in neutral. I don't know much about auto transmissions so if you have ideas ill try almost anything? Thank you sir.
Did you get your torque converter seated all the way? You should feel the torque converter distinctly seat three different times. The third time is the transmission oil pump, and it can be a major pain. Sometimes the transmission has to be set up on the tail shaft to seat the torque converter to the oil pump. That's a balancing act and a two person job. There is a measurement from the front face of the transmission to the face of the torque converter bolt holes you can check to be sure it's seated properly. Let me know what caused your issue. @@AndyMartiniac So when I put the motor back in I attached the torque convertor to the flywheel and ended up breaking the gear in the pump. Pulled the trans and put a new pump in and put the TC back in by the manual this time and had right at 1/2in from face of bell to the TC mounts. According to the manual that is seated all the way. Re-installed and still no luck. Tested the pump just to be sure I didn't muff that one up to. Pulled the line at the radiator cooler with trans in neutral and it was pumping just fine (trans oil spray everywhere, very fast haha) so I know that's not the issue. Double checked electrical connections and linkages this weekend still a no go when I put in gear.
I like your jeep...it's cool...I was wanting to change my jeep from a standatd to an automatic but I was wondering if you knew how many electrical connections there were to the transmission or would I need to change out the computer or the harness?
well done, Justin! Great video My transmission is leaking on the bottom of the bellhousing, right where the cover plate is. At service they told me they need to change or fix the torque converter or sth like that. ¿Do you know what should I really fix? maybe sealant?
Álvaro Meck most likely it's the front main seal around the shaft the torque converter is on. You should be able to locate the leak after removing transmission and sliding TC off of shaft. Seal charges are not that hard should be able to find video for that job. I had to end up rebuilding my trans so I have no video for seal replacement

It took me a day to come out and a day to put in . I could do it a lot faster now that I know what I'm doing. If you prep right it's a weekend job . Putting the transmission in was actually easier than taking it out. Once you stab the transmission two bolts on top the bell housing and it's all easy sailing from there
Yes I changed the seal and everything was fine. Still running great to this day. Sorry the bolts . The Bell housing has two pins to line it up. Then you install the bolts on top of the bell housing. You work yourself down from there.
Pro5 Photography once you pull the trans down the converter just slides off the shaft. Mine actually was stuck on the shaft . From what I was told that was caused from over heating. Mine needed a rebuild

I followed your instructions and dropped my transmission (06 TJ ) to replace the Torque Converter. I noticed after I put it all together, that I heard a cluck for a couple of seconds when I slowed down to about 30 MPH, it only happened while slowing down, never while accelerating...Did you experience anything like after you put yours together? Thank you
No I have never had that problem . Not to sure what it is . Did you fill your converter with enough oil, make sure every thing is tight . Sorry I don't have more than that . I would check out some forums and ask around.
when I put my shifter linkage back in for the 4x4 it says that it's ingauged in 4wheela when it's 2high. should I remove the shifter linkage put it back in 2high then put the shifter linkage back on? should that fix the issue?
J Robertson it wasn't that hard you just need to rotate the fly wheel in position with the front engine pulley. They broke loose pretty easy. Then you go back to front of engine and rotate again .
Overall I appreciate the video however I had to give it a thumbs down because you did it at night and not in the daylight so I could barely see anything

Pablo Castro not sure on exactly what it takes . The transmission does have about 4 or 5 plugs . So I would imagine I would need a harness and comp .
