Majority of people have not read the Bible, even “Christians.” They rely on others to tell them what they want to hear.

How do you know this verse is related to Jesus?
      Psalm 22:16 (KJV)
For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.
Jesus was not the only one in history to ever get crucified and pierced. This method of execution was popular back in their days. And Jesus was not the first one to ever get executed. Anyone who would get executed can explain the situation with this same verse. Why this verse fits Jesus only?!

The bible and Jesus tells us so
      Luke 1:70 (KJV)
As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:
      Luke 10:24 (KJV)
For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen [them]; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard [them].
      Luke 16:31 (KJV)
And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
      Luke 18:31 (KJV)
Then he took [unto him] the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished.
      Luke 24:25 (KJV)
Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:
      Luke 24:44 (KJV)
And he said unto them, These [are] the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and [in] the prophets, and [in] the psalms, concerning me.
      John 1:45 (KJV)
Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.
      Acts 3:18 (KJV)
But those things, which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled.
      Acts 3:21 (KJV)
Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.
      Acts 3:24 (KJV)
Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days.
      Acts 13:27 (KJV)
For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled [them] in condemning [him].
      Acts 26:22 (KJV)
Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come:
      Acts 28:23 (KJV)
And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into [his] lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and [out of] the prophets, from morning till evening.
      Romans 3:21 (KJV)
      But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
      Ephesians 2:20 (KJV)
      And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner [stone];
      Hebrews 1:1 (KJV)
God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
      1 Peter 1:10 (KJV)
Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace [that should come] unto you:

That's okay as far as it goes, it's just what we do with the news and most everything else.
But the questions should be answered to your own satisifaction by honest study of what Jesus has done and why, by reading the Bible.

WRT "...They rely on others to tell them what they want to hear..."
yeah, the MAGA heads enthusiastic about donald trump, seem to be of a similar mentality. I guess a tweaked version of reality makes them feel better about how little they have accomplished in their lives or something.
Not that Trump would especially value anything they do, other than help to inflate his own ego.

The great white throne is not here yet. You take salvation so lightly. Jesus did not.
Jesus said, You must be born again. John 3:3-8. "Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
That which is born of flesh is flesh, and that which is born of Spirit is spirit." Verses 3:5-6.
Born again is regeneration. Noah Webster 1828 Dictionary online.
'Regeneration means; Reproduction, the act of producing anew. In theology, New birth by the grace of God, that change by which the will and natural enmity of man to God and his law are subdued, and a principle of supreme
love to God and his law, or holy affections, are implanted in the heart.' Implanted.
Humbling isn't it. We cannot do that. So who does God look to? the humble and contrite ones. Psalm 34:18 and Isaiah 57:15.
Ask God to send the Holy Spirit to you, Luke 11:13. He will bring your sins to mind. As he does ask Jesus to forgive you. This will be painful, pride hates it!
When you see your desperate need (Jeremish 17:9) for a Saviour, call out to Jesus to save you. He came to save sinners.
Then do as the risen Jesus commanded, be baptized. Matthew 28:18-20, in the water of repentance Mark 1:1-5, Matthew 3:6. Calling on the name of the Lord, Romans 10:9-13. How? As Peter preached Acts 2:21, 38 and as Paul did, Acts 22:16, Acts 19:1-5.
      Think on Mark 16:16, 2 Peter 3:9, Romans 6:3-11, 1 Corinthians 12:13 and Colossians 2:6-15.
When He has regenerated you, you will desire Him. Read His inspired word, the Authorized Version, the King James Bible. The Spirit of truth will lead you into all truth. His word strengthens, washes (as does His powerful blood). His word reads you Hebrews 4:12. Daily bible reading and prayer is essential in building on the foundation which is Christ Jesus.
PS. Other apostles were baptized, they baptized others. John 4:1-2.

    The following is brilliant.
When Erhman asked his students how many of them believed the Bible is the inspired word of God, the entire class put up their hands. When Erhman asked them how many of them had read the Bible from cover to cover, only a few hands went up. It just confirms that no thought or reflection goes into fundamentalist dogma. I'm a Taoist, but that realization only came to me after having read as much Taoist writing as I could find, many times, and after much reflection and meditation (AKA prayer). It took years. The students referred to here evidently signed on with fundamental Christianity because someone above them in the social hierarchy imparted to them the understanding that it was a good idea. It's unfortunate. What results is a social support network built around aggressive political activism, without understanding, and without any path to Grace. I believe that accounts for the fact that fundamentalists appear to "believe" so many things that contradict the teachings of Jesus (who, BTW, was an ideal Taoist in fact, if not in name).

i understand that but listen to this, your flesh does not want to hear anything about God! that’s why you’re uninterested. this is what romans 3:11-18 says:
      “there is no one who understands;
there is no one who seeks God.
      All have turned away,
      they have together become worthless;
there is no one who does good,
      not even one.”
      “Their throats are open graves;
      their tongues practice deceit.”
“The poison of vipers is on their lips.”
“Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.”
      “Their feet are swift to shed blood;
ruin and misery mark their ways,
and the way of peace they do not know.”
“There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
so no one in their flesh understands God, no one in their flesh even seeks God, their is no fear of God in their eyes, they all tuned away and became worthless. this is true! but look at what james 4:6-10 says:
“But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.”
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.”
so we need to be humble, we need to realize we might be wrong. we need to realize that God might be real and that we sinned against that Holy and Perfect God. deuteronomy 4:29 says this:
“But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
well maybe you just don’t want to truly find God, and i think i understand that. but listen to this, it’s the best thing that will ever happen in your life. it might be scary, you might have to give up your pride or even your life. but Jesus said in luke 9:24: “for whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for Me will save it.” you might not even understand how that could make any sense. but if you just take that leap in the light and truth you will be set free from whatever you have right now and be given something that your mind right now can’t understand. the grace of God and His love for you. john 3:16-21 says:
“for God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.”
      and romans 10:9-13 says
“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile-the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
now idk if you ever read the bible much, but i suggest that you read at least 1 of the 4 gospels matthew, mark, luke, or john. and see what’s true, humble yourself and seek God. taste and see that the Lord is good. faith comes by hearing the word of God, God loves you so much and has thoughts of peace and not of evil for you! God wants to give you a new life, and for you to walk the streets of gold in His kingdom forever.

Why stop there. Why not read the word of God?
      The incomparable worf of God.
Not all bibles are inspired! So I speak only of the one that is:
In Psalm 12:6-7 God said He preserved His word. The others do not.
The Authorized Version, later called the King James Bible, shows God truly wants to know you as His! The Bible was written by over 40 writers of various backgrounds over a span of about 1500 years, written in the continents of Asia, Africa and Europe in Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic, [the Masoretic text].
The New Testament [Antioch,Textus Receptus] was written in Greek. They fit perfectly together to unfold the drama of redemption!!!
There are approximently 24,000 ancient copies of portions of the new testament. These are supported by writings of the church theologians in the first four centuries. There is also external evidence: Tacitus, a Roman historian, and Josephus, a Jewish historian. Both support bible accounts.
This book is not about stories, which are now viewed as fictional, but are true life events.
THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF PERFECTLY FULFILLED PROPHECIES. Fulfilled by Jesus.
HISTORICAL ACCURACY. Many, many about Israel. Some being fulfilled even in our time. Also, Prophecy of Cyrus and prophecy of the city of Tyrus.
Also: 101 SCIENTIFIC FACTS IN THE BIBLE.
God wrote about science thousands of years before man did. He tells us ahead of time so that we will know that He is God.

Although there's some doubt as to his authorship, Peter knew Jesus...I guess. I mean who knows if these people even existed?
Actually, now that I think about it, the notable historian, Josephus, recorded Jesus' crucifixion and, I believe, he may have mentioned the altercation at the temple. That's really the most reliable evidence that we have, at all, of Jesus' existence. The Gospels, themselves, are problematic at best. Nevertheless, people have managed to pull a narrative together that satisfies them.
I wish it was that easy for me "to believe". I feel a deep need for God in my life. And, being raised Catholic, I feel a strong inclination to believe that The Son of God is real. I'm as doubtful as anyone though...and my primary passion is for The Truth. I can't force myself to adopt such a serious a conviction just because "Grandma & Grandpa believed it".
I'm paraphrasing the author of, "The Historical Figure of Jesus" (whose name escapes me), who says that "while Jesus is enormously popular today...He wasn't a particularly important person during His own lifetime."
      Be well.

And why not. Jesus gives value to people by His sacrificial act of love. The incarnate God offered His flesh, His sinless flesh, as a payment for our sins.
This is while we were yet sinners. His enemies. "The heart of man is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked who can know it?. Yrs, it hss a natural enmity toward God and a strong love for self
      It wants to rule!
This will be painful, PRIDE HATES IT.
PS. The other apostles were already baptized, they baptized others. John 4:1-2.
Read His preserved word, the Authorized Version later called the King James Bible.

That we have no original autographs of the scriptures and the bible I have is not inerrant. Why would they tell me this? You ask. Therefore there would be more than 1 accurate copies of the original which Mark would have been alive to correct error for a while too?
Let’s say the first copy is copy A. Bart is saying a copy B would be of copy A. Why can’t copy B be of the original too. Why jump to say copy B is of copy A?

Even if you are right - this doesn't change the situation. Lets assume that the first copy of Mark is A1. Then the next copy is FROM MARK'S ORIGINAL A2, and so on. Then we have a number of first hand copies from Mark, A1, A2, A3, A4... which let's assume for the sake of argument are identical (though it's extremely unlikely). These copies will be distributed among the faithful, far afield, and themselves become copied. So even if the 'first generation' of copies are exact copies of Mark, subsequent copies (B1, C1, D1..) will drift as described. At some point someone is copying a copy - not Marks' text!

It is presumptively accepted that many copies would have been made from the “original”written text.
There is no presumption that mark would have proofed every (or any) of those copies.
As the original texts have not been discovered and overwhelmingly likely to no longer exist, there is no verifiable way to establish that any texts are an accurate copy of the original.
There is only accepted/credible means of deducing if a text is more probable to contain fewer inaccuracies and deviations from the original.
Never underestimate the potential for human error to change the course of Mankind as it is, was, & will be.

If Jesus and his followers all spoke Aramaic, why were all the New Testament documents written in Greek? I think the point you made in the Q&A was that the NT documents may have originally been written in Aramaic and then later copied into Greek. But why were they copied into Greek? Was it for the same reason they were copied into Syriac, Coptic, etc.(to reach a wider audience)? You focused on the massive number of differences in the NT manuscripts. I think you said the vast majority of them are small and insignificant. Flipping that, what percentage of the NT manuscripts is the same? If a large percentage is the same, isn't that evidence that the New Testament documents were copied mostly accurately?

Bart Ehrman says that every book from the ancient world has the problem of being corrupted and erroneous. The only exception is the Quran. It was memorized in its entirety by dozens of the Prophet Mohammad's companions during his life time and is currently memorized in its entirety by tens of millions of Muslims around the world. 1400 years later it is in its original text to the very letter . It has not been changed to the slightest and there is only one version.

Great question at 1:08:02 that you need to hear and consider - "omission is not contradiction" - this is material to textual criticism. No two people see or describe things exactly alike. For example, consider a witness who said "I saw and heard Bob and Tom in a room having a conversation. Now consider these facts which are all true but different (1) Bob and Tom were in the room having a conversation (2) Tom was in the room (3) Bob was in the room (4) Bob was in the room having a conversation (5) Tom was in the room having a conversation (6) I saw Bob in the Room (7) I saw Tom in the room - etc - you get my point and the numerous iterations of the statement that you could make and have them all be accurate.

I have only been a Christian for a year, but during this time, I happened to come across the Japanese translation of your book, Misquoting Jesus, at a library. I read it with great interest and subsequently delved into the original English version. As expected, there are subtle "distortions" in the translation from English to Japanese. Nevertheless, as a Japanese reader, I found the translation both engaging and impressive.
Considering this, even today, I can understand how early copyists, without access to modern conveniences like photocopiers or PDFs and instead relying on the laborious process of manual transcription, might have been tempted to alter texts based on their own interpretations-much like the scribes of the 4th-century Vatican Manuscript mentioned in your book.

    Bible in a snap.
Makes sense? God does not violate freewill although he did it many times, so instead of just throwing the ground troll in the fire to begin with, like he will eventually do anyway, humanity is condemned because a woman who came out of a rib was talked into eating a fruit from a walking upright, talking "serpent" who is then given lots of cool powers like temptation and roaming free all over the universe although his penalty was to crawl on his belly, but god who knows how this will turn up and loves us, even though at one point he regrets us so he drowned 99% of us, then sacrifices himself to himself to save humans from falling into the fire that he could have put the ground troll in the first place. Huh?

I am a couple of years late, but yes exactly. This is the entire problem of this Holy Fable. The literal interpretation is absolutely ridiculous. Yet, if an allegorical meaning is translated, then there is no human Adam & Eve and temptation to disobey god, hence it all falls apart too.
Genesis completely debunks the entire bible. I was challenged to read the bible from Genesis to develop a true understanding. I didn't finish the first page till seeing absolute nonsense and breaks from reality. I started with Genesis 1 and already by Genesis 1:14 it diverts from reality and makes no sense. 1:1-5 God creates the Earth, day light and night. But not until 1:14 Day 4 does he create the sun and other stars which light the Earth. LOL Nonsense by the first page. I am more knowledgable than god.

Yep, what part do you have a problem with?
By the way, you missed a bit. God orders us to stone each other to death especially women and greedy or drunk children and burn animals alive to keep him happy - and the only way he can ever forgive us for eating fruit is to make a son by raping a virgin then later using him as yet another a human sacrifice. It seems God fucking loves blood spllt in his name, it's the only thing that calms his rage and jealousy.
There was this other bloke who said "leave 'em alone and let them learn stuff" ... he was cast out of heaven. God expects you to believe that this lone voice of reason somehow is the one who likes human barbeques, when in fact it was God who throws people into lakes of fire, including our hero the guy who just wanted us to have knowledge and be like them.
Just proves, they had access to some excellent psychedelics 2000 years ago...

Bart Ehrman’s critique of the New Testament overemphasizes discrepancies and lacks balance. Differences between Gospel accounts, such as the timing of Jesus’ death, reflect thematic storytelling common to ancient biographies (bios), not contradictions. These variations enrich the narrative and highlight differing theological emphases.
His dismissal of oral tradition is flawed, as first-century Jewish culture emphasized precise memorization, ensuring the accurate transmission of Jesus’ teachings. The disciples, steeped in this tradition, would have preserved His words far more reliably than Ehrman suggests.
Ehrman also overlooks plausible harmonizations of Gospel accounts. For instance, the timing of Jesus’ crucifixion in John and the Synoptics can be reconciled by recognizing differing calendar systems. Such variations reveal complementary perspectives rather than inconsistencies.
Claims of theological distortion through scribal changes are overstated. Rare additions, like the Trinitarian phrase in 1 John 5:7, are isolated and do not undermine core Christian doctrines, which are supported by multiple texts. Theological stability remains intact despite textual variants.
His portrayal of canon formation as arbitrary misrepresents history. The Gospels and Pauline letters were widely accepted as authoritative by the second century, long before formal canonization. This organic process underscores the early recognition of these texts’ authority.
Finally, his emphasis on textual variants is misleading. Most are minor (e.g., spelling differences) and do not affect meaning. Less than 1% impact interpretation, and none alter the New Testament’s central message. Compared to other ancient works, the New Testament’s manuscript tradition is unparalleled in both quantity and reliability.
In sum, Ehrman overstates discrepancies and textual instability. The robust manuscript evidence, reliable oral tradition, and early canon development affirm the New Testament’s reliability as a historical and theological foundation.

  • @alephyod8871
    @alephyod8871 5 років тому +9

As I have examined each gospel I notice that each gospel expounds the word or the story that is lacking in other gospel but i found no contradiction at all.
Just like in Mark the name mentioned are only Magdalene and mary mother of james, but in Luke the women are Magdalene, and mary mother of james together with other women, I see no contradiction there but expounded words or story same with other verses.
The reason why Christian readers find no errors or contradiction is because they read it wholly and entirely thus puzzling the missing event in other gospel and that makes them understand the whole story.
You know the entire history does not solely depend on the writings of one historian. Each historians wrote historical events that are not entirely identical but they're somehow connected to each other the same with the gospel of the Apostles.

Note that early gospels have been misinterpreted over the centuries. For example, Jesus said "Yes, I KNOW the law says, 'an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth--or a SLAP FOR A SLAP'..but our Roman occupiers DON'T KNOW THAT JEWISH LAW. So if you want to live, and avoid a Roman dagger in your belly, just TURN THE OTHER CHEEK! If the soldier ask you to go with him a mile, to show him which road to take, GO TWO MILES with him. And if he's shivering in the cold, GIVE HIM YOUR CLOAK! That way you'll avoid being killed and alive to fight another day--when we Jews have out act together". Can;t you see that Jesus was a Jewish patriot, trying to "fish" for men: the "lost sheep" of Israel (Psalm 119:176 is where he took that term). He was a very good Jew, and he based ALL his philosophy of humility on Proverbs 25:6-7,21-22*(Luke 14:8-11 is almost a "word for word" quotation of Jewish scripture). The conclusion is also that Jesus read (and loved) ALL of Proverbs, Ch. 25, and all of Psalm 119 (the most Jewish Psalm in the bible). JESUS WAS A JEW--get that straight, reverend.
