    I think a video dedicated to tattoos before and after weight gain/loss would be great ! Personally I have found that my tattoo has not evenly grown with me :( I have a snake tattoo that starts just below my hip and goes partway down my thigh, and the top third by my hip has expanded outwards more then the rest, creating thicker lines and the top part of the snake is now thick and the rest is skinnier lol However, I am pregnant so my weight gain is not evenly spread. Thought I would share! Something to maybe consider when getting a tattoo that crosses over multiple body areas ?

      Blackwork ages well. Dotwork tends to blend as it ages so that the shading becomes less dot like and more even. If you have a dark, bold, high contrast design it turns out okay.

    I wouldn’t call the paw print with the paint splatter a “watercolor tattoo”. Watercolor is soft gradients with a less solid look, more blended.

      Haley Giunta just the thing is with watercolor tattoos it’s probably hard to make it look like watercolor because of all the water that you use but i see what you mean because it’s so dark

    • @AM-gv9db
      @AM-gv9db 5 років тому +22

      I had a conversation about this exact thing with a tattoo artist who specializes in watercolor. He said that since tattoos fade you have to make watercolor tattoos darker than you actually want to keep them from disappearing after a few years. Basically he makes his watercolor tattoos fairly darker than his vision to account for fading. He showed me comparisons between fresh and healed work (he often asks his clients for pictures of healed tattoos to show when potential clients ask for it), and honestly some of them looked better after a few years simply because the colors became less saturated and more watercolor like. Since it doesn't have any harsh lines this method of "waiting for it to look better" works very well with this style. Not to say saturated watercolor tattoos don't look good - because they do, I have two from him that are still saturated and look amazing, but it's interesting how you can use the fading to your advantage.

    • @AM-gv9db
      @AM-gv9db 5 років тому +7

      To add on my previous comment. He did say it's possible to make the colors look faded and watercolor-like from the get-go, but that he strongly advised against it since the colors wouldn't hold up well if they were too light.

  • @lucywright6018

    for watercolours i feel like it has less to do with the outline and more to do with the coulour choice, my friend got a lovely tattoo about two years ago, a solid black peter pan outline over two different colour watercolour splashes, one pink/red and one blue, she got her touchups after a month as her artist recommended and only about 1 year later theres nothing left execpt the peper pan outline, the watercolour is so vague and faded that it just looks like a weird bruise

    • @AM-gv9db
      @AM-gv9db 5 років тому +12

      I'm sorry for your friend. I would suggest asking for a darker and more saturated color than you invision if you ever get a watercolor tattoo - especially if you have darker skin. Many watercolor artist intentionally use a darker color just to account for fading, since a low saturated light color will fade very quickly. When I got mine, I remember being a bit nervous when the artist pulled out an array of bright neon colors. I was even unhappy with the tattoo at first because I thought it was too bright and didn't look like watercolor. But now, 3 years later it has faded somewhat. The bright neon color is gone but it's still saturated and looks amazing. So don't be afraid of going brighter and darker than you want. It will last longer that way and fade into the color you want it to be.

    This was a well informed video! Thanks for making this. You’re completely right about the weight gain. Most of the time the tattoo enlarges proportionally; and for weight loss the same except shrinking. However there are always outliers that are important to consider with all tattoos.
    If the Tattoo or line(s) fall on a *post tattoo* stretch mark then there is a high chance that the pigment in that skin will fill the entirety of the stretch mark. This happened with one of my clients and it distorted the image to an extent that we had to add onto/cover a portion of the old design.
    Though tattoos are permanent, they can be malleable!
    Weight loss can cause some lines to become too close together and thusly effect the aging process of them.
    The only times I have experienced the “lopsided” effect from bodily changes were from pregnancy and muscle mass.
    In the case of pregnancy, everyBODY is different. Some people’s tattoos look exactly the same and sometimes the skin doesn’t sit the same way afterwards which can leave the design warped. Most people fix this with a touch/cover up depending on severity.
    And lastly, muscles and their dimensions. Muscles obvi sit under the skin and when a person either greatly increases or decreases their mass it can effect how and where the skin sits on the body. Because muscles are more dimensional and grow in different proportions to each other than fat, a person is more likely to experience warping with this changing body type. Muscle mass can fluctuate through a person’s lifetime and is an important factor to consider when planning a tattoo.

    Love videos on this subject, thanks for another great one! I don't have any of this type myself, but I really like the way some tattoos with fewer bold outlines fade into the skin a little. It creates a cool organic effect, almost like the image has appeared by itself *from* the skin, iyswim! It's the same as with tattoos on dark skin; the fact that they blend in more with the surrounding skin is just a different look, not a tattoo that doesn't look right. Bold = awesome, subtle = awesome; it's all good!
    The only potential pitfall I see really is when darker colours within it are placed in such a way that when the rest starts to blend into its background more, the whole thing looks uneven. But I'm guessing that could be fairly easily sorted by adding a few more lines/areas of dark colour at a later date anyway. And as we come to understand more about how watercolour tattoos age, we're only going to get better at predicting results from the start and taking that into account when designing them.

      I really feel it has more to do with placement and your skin sometimes than the artist. I have two tattoos that I got done with friends at the same time on my body. One is black work and is faded and blown out, I've gotten it re-inked, it's just not looking great. The friend with the same tattoo looks nearly identical to the day we got them.
      My other matching tatt I got looks amazing. It's a trad style and looks amazing, my friend got hers in a different spot and it's not nearly as nice. Hers didn't heal as well as mine. I really feel like it can come down to luck too. I love all my tattoos, but I accept that they change over time. And I'm a person who is happy to go get re-inked and factor that into my design and placement decisions.

    Certain areas need to be touched up sooner than others obviously. The head, I've pretty much had to do two passes because ink doesnt hold well on the head skin. Your hair is thicker so your follicles are wider, so it pushes more ink out during the healing process. My head will be lightening down during healing, but anything on the neck or face(other than the head) stay VERY dark. Color, especially whites/yellows lose so much vibrancy during healing. And it also depends on how you heal it. Some artist will say, no petroleum based products, and use just non scented lotion. But Neosporin has a cream/lotion antibiotic that I use for the first 3-4 days, then once it starts to peel move over to lotion but dont overwash or wash too hard when its scabbing otherwise you're gonna pull out the ink yourself. You kinda have to let it sit and scab and let it fall off naturally the best you can and it will retain more color. Artists cant tell you this, because some people are just dirty and will get infections but if you're clean and you're past the inflammation portion (first 4 days), leave that fucker alone, dont wash it and let the scabs fall off. You can kinda see my Goddess Kali in my avatar. That was one day old and now that its healed its WAY lighter than the 91 Freeway sign I have tattooed on my neck. I did the "neglect tek" on my Lord Shiva piece on the top of my head and it healed just as dark as the 91 Fwy, so now I need another pass on my Kali to match the Shiva to the 91. The Kali healed so light m, you cant tell it's a crown of skeletons anymore on her head. It lightened about 50% of what's in the pic. I have a 2" x 3" spot on the back of my neck, I'm gonna put an evil eye in and then I'll have him guy give Kali one more pass and my dome will be done!! After 20 years, I finally finished my back piece this year too!! Lol. Today it seems like the millenials and the people that wish they were millenials are getting full suits in less than a year!! I just watched a guy go into a shop for anybody suit and had "ZERO concept" so now he's covered in black chicken scratch all over!! Tattoing was a warrior preparation in the Polynesian Islands. Tattoos are serious and were a rite of passage. The wrong one can get you killed in my neighborhood, so seeing it turn into a fad is very cringeworthy, to the hardcore enthusiasts. Notice all the "stars/celebs" of the past 20 or so years are getting "blackout" cover ups and shit, to hide the faddish tattoos they got years ago, you know, the flames, the barn wire, etc. Lol All gimic/faddish tattoos. So what do they do when the "blackout " fad goes away? Spend 2 million in laser removal surgeries?? You're f'ed!! I always thought of tattoos as badges of my life experiences, from the Good to the Evil, it's all there and only I can decode the symbology.

    Love this series! I'm considering a first tattoo, basically just want a tiny letter 'B' on my inner ankle, but the idea of it blurring over time is kinda putting me off! Would choosing a finer/thinner font prevent blurring as much? Or is it inevitable?! xx

    • @karmicphase

      Caroline J it's kind of funny, because the smaller and finer the font is, the worse it blurs out.

    what do you think determines lines being blown out over time. Do you think its application of the tattoo, the persons body, healing practices? Some tattoos the line work still looks amazing years later and others not so much.

  • @MsKellyRyanAwesome

    That's more of a water splash tattoo and not watercolor, (the dog paw) there is some technical application difference like using lines but in the splash color and not black lines. You dont water down the ink. You can get a similar look and give it longevity . My mentor tattooed for 47 years so I got the best education on tattoo longevity possible. My second tattoo is in a watercolor style and compared to my first tattoo (black and gray) it held up a lot better than my first one but that's probably because I almost never expose my second tattoo to the sunlight since its quite high on my thigh whereas my first tattoo is on my shoulder blade.

    @treacle tatts - Late finding this video/your channel, so hopefully you’ll see this! I’ve been planning for several years to get 3 small birds tattooed in black on my inner wrist (to symbolize my kids). I went last week to a highly reputable tattoo place to finally get it and they told me they wouldn’t do the tattoo for me because they knew it wouldn’t age well and I wouldn’t like it 10+ years from now so they didn’t feel right doing it - not as small as I wanted it, WHERE I wanted it. They were very nice and apologetic about it and I thanked them for their honesty. I was really disappointed, though, as it would have meant a lot to me and I’d thought carefully about it for so long. You seem quite knowledgeable - do you agree that tattoo would not age well?

    • @Rose-jz6sx
      @Rose-jz6sx 3 роки тому +1

      I know this is a year old, but they were right it wouldn't age well, did they suggest doing them bigger or in a different place? Because I would take that recommendation if so

    • @mirielle20
      @mirielle20 3 роки тому +1

      @@Rose-jz6sx Thanks for the reply - I’d forgotten I’d commented here! They did - they suggested larger and on my forearm. Looking back, I’m so grateful for their straightforwardness and that I didn’t have it done. I’m still considering getting a forearm one, but life and then the crazy state of the world have put lots of things on hold. Anyway, thanks for affirming that! 🙌🏼

    Does a tattoo ever really settle into the skin completely? In other words, is there an approximate time in years where the tattoo stops fading/changing for the most part? (excluding changes to the body such as weight loss)

    • @annaturba
      @annaturba 5 років тому

      Diana Montero I am not an expert but I‘ll give it a try: Fading means, that the small particles of the color get transported „away“ (lymph nodes). The bigger particles stay where they are. Over time particles will break due to sunlight exposure and so the fading will continue. I think that on parts of the body that are not exposed to the sunlight, the fading might stop after a while (maybe a few years?), except for fading due to rubbing on the skin (e.g. on the soles of feet or between fingers).

    • @jamesross160
      @jamesross160 5 років тому +1

      @@annaturba I thought I read it never stops fading, the particles are different sized based on the colors. Some colors like red and white are smaller so your body is able to remove them to the liver. Bigger particles can degrade over time as the body attacks it, eventually reducing their size so they can be carried away to the liver. Black mainly a carbon based ink, does not get taken out of the body, since we are carbon based beings. Obviously other things tend to reduce the size of the ink particles aswell, the sun, certain oils or alcohol be placed on it.

    Should you get tattoos with smaller lines so that when they get thicken they just end up closer to the size you want them? I know you need enough space between the lines so they don't blur out too much.
