    Hey Matt, I am so glad to have found your channel, I am from Brazil and a huge military history fan, the Anzacs hold a special place in my heart, I see their resilience and cheerfulness even in extreme situations very similar to that of Brazillians.
    I would like to ask you about a recommendation, which regimental histories are the best to read about Passchendaele?
    I mean from which battalions would you recommend?
    Also, congratulations for your brilliant work and for keep the memory of these men alive!
    Cheers, Gustavo

    I took my Dad to Ypres in 2018, armistice day, and I put him where his grandfather first went over the top on 31st July 1917 at Klein zillebeke. We did Flanders fields museum and paid our respects to uncle Arthur commemorated at tyne cot. My gt grandfathers bn was also called out of reserve and carried the forward slope of Tower Hamlets during the first day of battle of Menin rd, giving the Diggers the jumping off point to carry Tower Hamlets.

    Just got home after visiting Ypres. Such an amazing place, we visited areas where my great grandfather served during 1917. I would love to join one of your tours one day to explore more of these historical places. Thank you for important work preserving the memory for future generations. 🇦🇺

    New to your channel and loved this! Just to clarify tho... at approx 53m you mention no NZers names are commemorated at Tyne Cot or Menin Gate. True for Menin Gate but approx 1360 names are at Tyne Cot. I may have misheard you tho.... ☺

      Yes you are correct. Technically the NZ Memorial is separate from the British one, but I was remiss not to mention it. Thanks for the clarification. 👍🏼

    Any idea on the casualty limit Haig had in mind to call off the attack?

    • @MatMcLachlanHistory
      @MatMcLachlanHistory  6 місяців тому +1

      It didn’t really work like that. Casualties weren’t tallied until after the battle. Success would be measured by the taking of objectives, so all Haig would have known in real time was that the troops were struggling against heavy opposition.

      @@MatMcLachlanHistory The importance of this is of course these men were guilty as punch, yet I still to this day have to speak up for the victims. These atrocities cut deep through generations of family. Just as they would if it were our families. The denial is rife and was especially showing its head around the voice debate. It’s evidence like this you cannot deny. Thanks for your swift reply. 👍🍻
