I felt the same way, but then I found out something about the Thor Movies...
They are filmed in the tone of the narrator. Odin narrated the first 2. They were very serious and kingly.
Ragnarok was opened with Thor telling his story to the skeleton. It was meant to be told in a lighter tone because he's recounting his story to the survivors on the ship. He's trying to lead and lighten the mood.
Love and Thunder is told from the perspective of Korg. That's why it's so light and dumb. If you watch it in that light, you'll see all the mannerisms and mentality of Korg.

Thor lost his entire family, the love of his life, good friends/Avenger teammates and his entire home planet. At first he fell deep into depression, he beheaded Thanos but that offered little relief so he’s trying to use humor and forced happiness to live on.
Not every character needs to be brooding, or unreasonably oppressive to others (like Wanda). Psychologically this is a good take on how many people deal with tragedy.

He was an "insert bad guy #14/Type B here" type of villain so the Guardians have someone to fight. He may have been genocidal but aside from a few very short moments, the first Guardians never got that serious and maintained a consistent lighthearted tone. This movie flip-flopped around because it was generally one of the silliest MCU movies up to this point but at the same time the villain was portrayed incredibly seriously and they also put in a cancer subplot that is never played for laughs once. It's like they wrote two different versions of the movie, couldn't decide which one to take, and therefore just made both.

Nothing in Thor ever felt like that. It's just a barrage of dumb quips which served no purpose in the story. The constant shift between serious and comedy was jarring as fuck. Just because it worked for GotG, doesn't mean it has to be repeated everyfuckinwhere.

The MCU has never been able to balance seriousness and humour. Pre MCU Marvel films could like the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films, some of the Fox X-Men films, the first 2 Blade films had moments of humour in between the action and so on. But the people behind the MCU seem scared that they'll get accused of taking the films too seriously if they don't fill them with unfunny jokes and bad quips and puns. It's worst when they have characters laugh off the injuries and deaths of their friends and family.

Now he wrote & directed JoJo Rabbit, which a lot of people liked, but again it had the same faults of this not know if it was serious or a comedy.
I'd say if you don't like one or either of those, don't watch his 2023 film that he also writes and directs. It's not unfair to say that some just can't do it all. I think a Gorr story and Jane Foster cancer story should have been split to 2 different movies. Gorr's such a massively impactful character/villain in the Thor comics and to see an actor of Bale's caliber reduced to comic relief as well as underwritten, is absolutely awful.
Jane's cancer and her transformation to the 'Mighty Thor' could've been really amazing and emotional. To tie that off with Thor's own dilemma of existential immortality. I think a lot of us were left gobsmacked how Waititi and especially Feige thought treating the two most emotional arcs of Thor's character in the comics were used in live action.

I disagree. I think what works about the film is the idea of a formerly devout mortal turned godkiller, contrasted with a mortal woman of science who takes up arms in defense of gods even though she knows it will kill her to do so.
That's a helluva f---ing story. The problem with the movie is that it keeps interrupting that story for a rom-com love triangle: Thor and his two hammers.
The thing that doesn't work about the movie is Thor. He's a distraction, the comic relief, actually, from the movie with his name on it.
The movie _should_ have been called Love and Thunder, focused on Jane vs Gorr, and only brought in Thor _with_ the Guardians in the second half of the film when Jane realizes she's too new and in over her head.

I absolutely loved it. Comedy and tragedy have such a complex relationship. Not sure why people can't handle that. It needed to be an hour longer. We needed more of Gorr's progression into madness. It was rushed. That was my only note. Taiki is brilliant.

I think Waititi went a little too far with some stuff. I'd legitimately rate the movie higher if the goats didn't scream every time they appeared on screen. That said, Waititi's brand of absurdist humor is so endearing, he really seems like a lovely man and it comes through in all of his movies, including this one.

I loved this. The theming/pacing is a little odd, but that is kind of a hallmark of all of Taika Watiti's movies except for Ragnarok. He blends tragedy and humor together in a way that is not seamless at all. It is confronting and wacky, but I kind of love it. It's kind of like real life where tragedy can happen at any moment.

I found the most endearing thing about this movie, was when Thor told Mjolnir to always protect Jane. When the broken hammer sensed that Jane was dying, it reassembled and gave her the power of Thor to save her, although Jane's body wasn't strong enough to stay Thor for long.

The screaming goats are actually part of Norse mythology from the 13th century-Tanngnjóstr and Tanngrisnir-the goats who pull Thor's chariot. They also appear in the Thor comics under the names Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder. So they are more than comic releif in the movie. Of course the myth is even weirder than the movie. In the myth the goats are slaughtered to provide sustenance for the gods, then Thor uses Mjölnir to resurect them the next day.

They ate them when Tor traveled to Utgårdaloke that one time. He's a giant, not a god. Maybe you're mixing the story about Särimner with his goats? And also i dont want to be picky, but our religion ended in the 12th century.

@@loris-bismar The original religion may have ended in the 12th century, but the mythology (and mythology is the proper term) has endured to this day. The definition of mythology is a collecion of stories, folktales, or lore centered around a particular religious or cultural tradition. So it is not offensive in the least. The story I am referring to comes from the Prose Edda written by Snorri Sturluson in the 13th century.
