I've meant to learn Twilight Sturggle for years and began to learn the rules for this yesterday. I expect it will be my gateway to play the bigger version, as you say
The immediate end on one area's scoring is in normal TS too (Europe instead of Africa). I guess it's possibly less likely to happen, but it isn't a new thing.
I like this one a lot. Play time of about 30 minutes lets you play as both sides in an hour. The Ethiopia/somalia autowin is absolutely necessary and brings tension/weakens Egypt adequately which is associated with both regions. 9/10 for me, original TS being 8.5/10 for this type of game. The fact that you can get shanked by bad dice rolls is a lot less annoying due to the playtime.
Great to see the DT is reviewing the GMT/war game side of the hobby more. I think that side of the hobby has moved closer to the rest of the hobby in the last decade. I also really enjoyed Joey in this review and South China Sea one. I hope we'll see him more.
Haven't played enough to settle on a score with this one but if you're a T Struggs fan it really makes you wanna play the OG. I think the production value is good. Really like the custom dice.
Just got my copy yesterday. So far I'm liking it, and while, no, it's not the epic TS experience, it's not meant to be. Sometimes I want a quick game that scratches that itch and this feels like it will do that.
How much of it IS transferrable to Twilight Struggle proper? Is it just a few cards, or is this basically an expand-alone that you'll likely never want to play on its own?
It looks like mechanically it is basically Twilight Struggle, so if you learn this, big TS will be a simple step up. Edit: I see what you are asking, ignore me.
The main problem of this game is you want more of it (a longer bigger version)? I like Twilight Struggle a lot and it is very punishing for a brand new player. For me this is given step into TS... or when I don't have enough time for the whole Cold war worldwide.
There are mistakes i caught when you explained coups: 1. coups don't always decrease DEFCON. They do when you coup a battleground and there's a special rule for flashpoint countries where coup may or may not affect DEFCON 2. coup doesn't always remove opponent's influence AND add your own. It does when you have some left when your opponent's influece is completely removed. I also have some questions for which i couldn't find an answer: 1. If a card says "remove 2 USA influence from Middle east" for example. Do you still remove 2 to 1 from a controlled country or is it 1 for 1 because it's an event? 2. the "Ogaden war" card seems to be extremely hard to event, since you have to roll 5-6 modified, which means if USSR controls 1 country next to Ethiopia you HAVE to roll 6, and if USSR controlls two countries you have no chance at all. Is that correct or am i missing something?
When I hear people who love TS and look at this game and go "meh". My response is: well of course you would say that, your not the players this is targeting. This is aimed at people like me who never played TS, mainly because it is so epic. Now that I have played this and love it, I now what to invest in the main game.
I’ve been laying in wait patiently for years, and now my time has finally come. I get to be the annoying commenter who needlessly corrects a small detail in a board game review video… and here it is!! : the OG Twilight Struggle is 10 rounds, not 7… Whew, I did it!
We went from “I want a 30 minute version of Twilight Struggle” to “If I wanted Twilight Struggle, then I’d just play the original” in record time.
I have always thought that a lot of people would like twilight struggle but it looks intimidating. This mini version would be great for teaching.

You're such an old hand at TS, Tom, I love it. You did a great job explaining it.

Have you played it solo? Is it worth only for that? If you may, pass on some thoughts. Thank you

Flashpoint South China Sea, right? (There are other games called Flashpoint.)
Yes Dan, that one. It´s also part of the GMT: Lunchtime series.

Seem to be missing the point that this was designed to be played within a lunch break.
Would have also be nice if they had someone with no experience with Twilight Struggle chime in.

Does anyone have a link to the Flashpoint game they are referencing? I only find a firefighting game.
It’s here. ua-cam.com/video/QTYGmfvn_Dk/v-deo.html
I'm guessing it's Flashpoint: South China Sea

For your first question events don’t care if the country is controlled unless otherwise specified.

I was looking forward to a trimmed down version of twilight struggle, but I was hoping for something maybe half that scale, not this small.
12:05 Tom, TS is 10 rounds, not 7😅
It's basically 5 times longer than this game
What game does he say is 'real baby twilight struggle'? Flashpoint? Is that a new game? ty

They said 10 in the intro. Weird Tom thought that it was 7 when he likes the game.
Sorry, 10 turns, not rounds. Muahahahaaa
@@donut2099 blast!
This is an odd game to exist when 13 minutes exists
