- Vocal Coach Reaction to David Coverdale - Whitesnake - Is This Love - Ken Tamplin
Is this love?
Well, it probably is. You’ve heard me say, many times, that David Coverdale is one of my all-time favorite singers. Best known for his work in Whitesnake, which was formed after a stint with Deep Purple, Coverdale’s vocals have a powerful blues tinged flavor; warm and velvety.
The power ballad, “Is This Love?” has become a mainstay in Whitesnake’s live shows since 1987 and was a hit for the band, reaching number two on the US singles chart, making it their second biggest hit after, “Here I go Again”. Coverdale has confirmed that the song was originally written for Tina Turner.
Check out my versions where I demonstrate the kind of compression/ distortion he uses, and how to achieve it safely. I can’t guarantee that you’ll have Tawny Kitaen rolling around on your Jaguar but I do hope you enjoy them. Let’s rock!

I could listen to David Coverdale all day every day! The entire White Snake band is awesome!!!
Hudson1910 Sure are!
I have this live dvd from Hammersmith Apollo in 2006 .Mr coverdale was amazing in every song from this konsert . Unfortunately his voice has left the building in recent years. And that's really sad. He was one of the best rock singer of all time.
KEN TAMPLIN
WHITESNAKE IS AWESOME! GREAT REACTION! YOU ARE AWESOME!
Man it would be awesome to see them in Concert!
Please do more reaction to WHITESNAKE!
Chilling out and watching this. Love Whitesnake, love Glenn Hughes(he made me teary eyed at one of his concerts with a beautiful heartfelt shout-out to me mid show). Deep Purple are my all time favourite band. Looking forward to watching your covers after this video. Followed my your song with Doug Aldrich.
Love and sausages
Muttley
Thanks Muttley!
@@kentamplin Couldn't find the Wake The Nations song on here so have ordered the album. Looking forward to it's arrival
Another awesome review Ken - watching your videos is an education, keep up the good work x
TEMAZOOO!! Ken Y Pedazo de cantante Coverdale, Super Like Ken👍
Coverdale is definitely underrated as a vocalist!! I’ve always argued that hes one of the best!
I know the show, he is amazing. Age? It's a matter of number, nothing better! Thank you!
Gracias y saludos cordiales desde Mallorca para ti también Ken tamplin
So excited to see this one pop up!!! :)
I've always been a big fan of Whitesnake, from David Coverdale to all of the AWESOME guitarists who have played with him through the years!
I remember when this came out. I was in high school. Ahhh the memories of sitting around the swimming pit, while this cranked on the cassette player. I miss the 80s
He has a great voice..love it❤️😎
I love your mixture with other rockers! Especially Lanny Cordola and Scott Van Zen
Have you heard the Magdallan album, Big Bang, with Ken and Lanny? Friggin' masterpiece! The song "End of the Ages" is just killer vocals and musicianship.
David Coverdale 67 years old sounding like that........I think I found another crush 😳😳
Too many memories on this one.
Same here, John!
Great video Ken. Loved the little back story about meeting Doug and your “concentric circles”. I didn’t realize he played with Whitesnake. Takes me back to reading through liner notes of bands “CDs” and cassettes I loved to figure out who contributed. When I figured out that Lanny Cordola played on Magdallan and House of Lords I was floored. I loved how your late 80s early 90s stuff hit you with the in your face (pun intended) wall of vocals in the vein of Boston or Yes 90125 and Big Generator.
Cool stuff, Ken! Seems like we're inspired by the same people :) I'm gonna see him and the band in Belgrade in June. It'll be my first Whitesnake show, I'm thrilled :3
Don’t forget about the BRILLIANT Reb Beech on guitar as well.
Ken. I’ve been keeping up with you since the first “Shout” album. You’ve always reminded me of Coverdale and Gramm. Love these vids! 🤘✌️🎸
Great video Mr. Tamplin!
Uriah Duffy on bass. My son toured Europe and Canada with his monster brother bassist, board player, and singer, Dorian Duffy.
One of our locals that was at my shows is now David’s guitarist. Doug is my all time favorite guitarist in the world.
Joel Hoekstra is the guitarist now. He’s also in Trans Siberian Orchestra.
I’m a sucker for the back stories Ken. I know a few myself with George Lynch and Oni Logan who I’ve met through an old singer until I had a terrible neck surgery.
I was going to play in a Whitesnake Tribute Band but I just don’t care to do tribute bands.
Don’t forget the late great Cozy Powell! Pray that brother’s in the Lord.
Thanks for the thoughts, Mark!
I love Rainbow and its Deep Purple relatives Dio, Joe Lynn Turner, Graham Bonnet, etc. All underrated.
All some of my all-time favs Eric Swartz!
Q*bert 👍👍👍
Underrated in that I could ask every single person I know including strangers and none of them will know who they are, besides maybe Dio.
Great performance
Stefan Riemann 👍
@@kentamplin check out the Band: Survivor! awesome too.
Reb Beach and Tommy Aldridge are also in this one. This band is so kickin’! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Marco Mendoza on bass, Timothy Leary on keys also
i've seen them 5 times live
I love Coverdale's voice and style, but last time I saw him live, about 3 years ago it did seem to me that his voice had lost maybe some range or agility in the upper register. Still blew my socks off, but It did seem he was dodging the real tough notes, like in Still of the night, and the band was (maybe strategically) playing "over" his voice. Could you analyze a live performance of another one of Whitesnake's songs and see if there's something there?
Btw, they'll have another show where I live in June, and I can't wait :D
I loved House of Lords!!! You're awesome and i enjoy your vids!!
Do Glenn Hughes next please
Carlos Alberto Velázquez Zúñiga Until then, here's my student, Gabriela singing, "Burn". ua-cam.com/video/Fm2tfr5sCH4/v-deo.html
Yes, that is Tommy Aldridge on drums. Seen him with Ozzy when Randy was alive for the Blizzard & Diary tours, & when I seen the reformed Thin Lizzy with Scott Gorham & John Sykes in the late 90's, Tommy was the drummer on that tour after taking over for Brian. The band killed it at the show I seen, with Tommy just a madman that night & John did a great job on vocals too. He even sounded a bit like Phil at times. Great show man! This was right around the time that I seen them: ua-cam.com/video/gOt0c2TexAU/v-deo.html Drum solo 32:26 - 37:00 \,,/_(-,-)_\,,/
Seen Giuffria back when they were opening for Deep Purple on the Perfect Strangers tour. Pretty sure Craig Goldy was in the band at the time & Chuck Wright on bass. Chuck was in & out of Quiet Riot & has played on tons of other stuff, & he's worked on film scores as well.
Wow Doug played on your album...! I love Wake the nations!
Coverdale is ok, I think you top him🤩
Did Adrian Vandenberg play on the recording of this???
Jöhan Richards - I'd say John Sykes
Can you please do a cover of You Say by Lauren Daigle?
Thanks for the suggestion, Steven!
Deep Purple Ian Gillan era or Coverdale time
Always loved the beautiful tone of David Coverdale’s voice....husky & warm- still just amazing!
I agree Lynn!
Coverdale is an amazing singer. The music videos bring back 80’s memories! I watch them on a regular basis. Even heart videos.
Actually this video is from 2004 and Coverdale is 52 years old here. He's 67 now and sounds a little different but I would say he's still killing it for his age.
When i saw him in 2016... he was ON .. totally balls out ...
When he screamed are you ready , i knew he was here to killing it
As european , the Updating of his pre 1987 gritt ( and post 1991 gritt) dont bother me at all as opposite as a lot of people on youtube , but it was great singing and Agression when i saw him ..
1987 fans dont get it , but David never really sang Clean , he always sang " shot " ..
Howlin wolf , gutty stuff .
I saw some show this year .
On moscow , he killed it , in Argentina , he was on , despite you feel and see even on playing and Faces the tiring .. for everybody , not just David , even Tommy . Even joel . but still good . I was surprised .
Hey he s touring for 2 years now... at his age .
Its quite admirable .
Coverdale is like the Robert Plant of his era, Whitesnake is an amazing band. Doug Aldrich's work with Dio is just classic stuff. Thanks for your reaction to Coverdale Mr Tamplin.
Coverdale and Plant are of same era
Plant was angry after the Coverdale/Plant 1994 album where he really sounded like Plant in some songs. Called him David Cover-version
I love Whitesnake. Glenn Hughes is Killer too. Marco Mendoza is a great singer too. Bass player
FINALLY someone talks about Coverdale being in Deep Purple!!! Thank you! You are incredible and I love all your videos, but that Deep Purple mention made me really happy. His work with them goes ignored a lot, but it was so good.
If you're doing more Coverdale, please consider Soldier of Fortune.
Coverdale sounds killer in this overdubbed DVD production ;)
Dani Haus I heard that there are no overdubs in this concert as hard as that is to believe
This live DVD was recorded in 2004. So, Coverdale was around 53/54 years old at the time.
That being said, the cover of Burn on that DVD is still burnt on my brain. Doug Aldrich and Reb Beach absolutely smashed it.
Sanyam Jain 👍👍👍
Whats about david coverdale...thats he has so much powerfull in his voice...a rock very strong machine.just amezing and rare.
I R O N G R A Y Awesome singer!
Coverdale was awesome! but pretty sure Graham Bonnet never sang for Deep Purple. Maybe your getting it mixed up with Rainbow. Love your video's. But wish you would let loose and trash someone if they deserve it. Not everyone one is awesome! I understand you like to keep things positive but concert goers pay a lot of money to see these guys and sometimes they sound like crap..
Thanks for featuring the mature David Coverdale who is still awesome! I took a lot of flack for loving Whitesnake in the '80's, and I'm glad you feel it, too!
Spiral Flesh 👍👍👍
@@kentamplin please tell me what do you say about this ? This eas young Macedonian singer who died in car crash at age of 26 . en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/To%C5%A1e_Proeski please coment when you have time. Thank you!
Dave is still killer, but they are tuned way down, compared to the original recorded version. I actually think it sounds beautiful with the lower tones though.
Coverdale is easly top 20 in the most boss vocalist in rock history!
😊
Ken, we need a Ray Gillen reaction. Badlands High Wire live, please!
I agree!
Coverdale Rock's!!! I had the opportunity to watch the Whitesnake a few times and the band keeps on pretty good. in September of this year I will go to the show again in São Paulo. Nice video Ken 🤘!
David Coverdale is one of the best rock singers of all time in my opinion. Clean, full-bodied vocals full of emotion. Him singing Soldier of Fortune is one of my few eargasms. Keep up the great content!
▼
Melvin Rimorin I love him!
@@kentamplin Let me sidetrack a little bit. I'm a relatively new subscriber and I'm not sure if you've reacted to any Arnel Pineda live performances. Please do. Journey is my favorite band, since Steve Perry. :)
Hi Ken, Can you do a Simply Red reaction or cover? Mick Hucknall has an amazing voice that has gotten even stronger over the years. Love your work!
great as always Ken!, cant wait to hear you react on Glenn Hughes hope is the "Celebrating Jon Lord- This Time around" or "live in Australia - Keep on moving" , both are phenomenal, or "Mistreated in australia" its also really good, very naked version, hope you check them out
Love Joe Lynn Turner and Steve Morse.
The story goes John Wayne and David accidentally met at a bar in LA back when David was with Deep Purple. David was gobsmacked to meet The Duke Himself, but when John found out who David was he said "One of my daughters thinks the sun shines outta your ass, can I have your autograph?"
Great story, MrPiperian!
That's too funny!!! Ha! Ha! Ha! Yeah that's something John Wayne would say!😜🎸🎸🎸📺
Love your videos Ken. On Coverdale for a sec...I've come to really appreciate not only his vocals, but him. I've checked out some interviews of his over the last couple of years and I've gotta say he's quite a thoughtful, intelligent, well spoken guy.
George Glad to hear that.
This song is fantastic ! And the live version is awesome ! David Coverdale is just an incredible singer !!! One of my favorite singer 🙏
To me its that power in his voice even when he is singing lower. Its like you can feel it on top of hearing it. I'm not sure how to explain it but he is very good. That's one of my favorite songs of all time. Was Ronnie James Dio involved with Deep Purple also?
This live performance doesn't touch the original, so much more impressive
I grew up with Deep Purple and really liked Coverdale as a singer, but somehow he always was better in the studio then live. But for me he and Dio are the greates rocksingers from this era.
Btw: There's another guitarist in the band named Reb Beach. Not so bad player as far as i remember. ;)
Reb Beach smokes!!.. Coverdale went through guitarists like you and I change socks.. heck Stevie Vai was even in Whitesnake for a while.. but Reb wound up in Winger.. check out his guitar work (rhythm and a smokin' solo) on She's Only Seventeen.
@@BobbyLaneProductions Reb is still a member of Whitesnake.
I was wondering if you might give your opinion on how adam lambert does as a singer as frontman for Queen?
I'd love to hear this too. Personally, I really love that they went with Lambert. I love that he is not a Freddie clone, but has his own unique awesome voice along with his generous & extravagant performance style.
Whitesnake fan here. Started listening to them around 87 when that album came out. I was in 11th grade. I find myself going way back to their early days. I like the bands more bluesy sound. Much better in my opinion. And that lineup of Moody, and Marsden are my favorite guitar players.
This dvd is killer, Coverdale is amazing... super band... reb beach is one of my favorites... the current band features Joe Hoekstra on guitar (Doug departed a while ago). Great vid!
Rodrigo Ribeiro Rock 👍👍👍
I Wonder what Glenn Hughes did right since his voice is absolutely gorgeous even today. And David has lot of problems these days like many other older Singers.
sarty23 so true! Glenn's voice is still incredible!
I just heard Coverdale three years ago, and he must have been on that night, because he was great. I was actually shocked he was still that good, but we are talking about a guy on a bad night can still out sing most of us.
kind of a shame how David treated John Sykes.. I would like to know the real story.. Sykes is a pretty good singer himself.. of course he kills on guitar.. and writes great songs!
This is still the best ballad Ever
It's a great one, David!
Whitesnake is such an amazing band and Coverdale is one of my all time favorites, this music gets me back to my 20's (im 50 now), oh man, those were really crazy years!. Thank you very much for the video Ken, really loved it!. By the way you planning to do a vocal coach reaction to Still of the Night? please consider it!! take care man!
David still mesmerizes the ladies at his age! Good God! I don't feel so bad being 51 this year and still shredding away on the guitar! I don't think I'll stop playing until I expire with a guitar in my hand! Haha! Once you become a true musician, and it gets into your blood, you never quit!
Axess2084- Keep on rockin'!!
Love your back-stories Ken.. Really enjoying the format of these videos where you analyze the vocals, the performance and musicianship.. very insightful and enjoyable!!
The problem is, this concert video is about 15 years old and the chances are all the lead vocals were re-recorded in the studio. Listen to him singing it live now and do a critique of that.
Blastfrom thepast thanks for the feedback! That is certainly possible.
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy I think Coverdale was still very good in the time this clip was filmed. Nowadays his voice is sadly totally shot. But we have to be thankful for all the emotion he gave us for many decades with his phenomenal voice.
@@Heavymetaleternia His voice is not shot ! I suggest that you go see WS live and then apologize ! Listen to the new album...it was relised im May.
Sadly I would have to agree! Heard Whitesnake live last summer with Foreigner! Foreigner killed it, Whitesnake, not so much!
In my opinion..david coverdale is so so unic..and there its must be a situation..that the movie film thatre ..has to do a movie about is life ,music,bands..and of caurse whitesnake. An international movie.
David, Klaus, and Paul Rodgers are freaks of nature. Amazing their voices sound like they haven't aged. I guess it is because they use proper technique. As always Ken thank you for sharing your insights and providing us with a wealth of information in helping us on our journey to be the best singers we can be. PS I love the shirt Coach. Rock on!
It's beautiful! 🎼🎵🎶
Glad you like it!
I really don't mean for this to be some sort of trolling response, but hopefully more of constructive criticism. I personally find it a bit annoying when you sing along with the singers your reviewing. It makes it more difficult to hear them. And it's especially worse when you don't know the lyrics.
That aside, I think it's much more helpful when you point out more of the things they're doing well and the things they don't do so well.
And I think it would be good if you occasionally pick singers that aren't so good or even pick some clips of bands that aren't national acts. Just a thought.
Otherwise, I really enjoy your channel. Keep up the good work.
I Just recently discover your channel and its awesome, specially reacting to rock singers..if you could also react to Mr big daddy brother, lover little boy live..will be much appreciated..my favorite band and favorite rock singer eric martin..i also love those little stories you tell behind the music,band,singers..etc..keep it up..youre great..
mcfly .hur Thank you!
All these people popping up with "reaction videos" to singers was getting too much.. Ken Tamplin is totally different; if he's doing a series like this, I'll watch.. He truly knows what he's talking about and I'd value his opinion..
I appreciate that, Mark!
KEN TAMPLIN
HAVE A EXCELLENT Memorial Day weekend! God Bless you,ALWAYS! KEEP ON STOMPIN'!
ROCKETJEFF Matejek- You too, man! Thank you!
white fuckin snake. imo, this band realy defined 80's comercial metal. not rock, not heavey metal, not glam either. we're talkin 1980's mainstream comercial metal. they were just heavy enough to escape that trap that poisen, faster pussy cat, and all those other glammy poppy rock bands fell into. they had prodigiouse guitar, amazing vocal heroics, movie star good looks with out the make up and hair jacked to the rafters. they were a great fucking band i think. just raw fuckin talent, they realy were their own band. the world needs another whitesnake!!
KEN TAMPLIN
PLEASE DO A REACTION REVOLUTION SAINTS.
DOUG ALDRICH
DEEN CASTRONOVO
JACK BLADES
"LIGHT IN THE DARK" or "I WOULDN'T CHANGE A THING."
I think they have a new album, as well.
Ken Tamplin, that is Awesome that you know Doug! Do you still keep in touch?
Can you do a reaction to NIGHT RANGER/"SISTER CHRISTIAN" & "RUNNING OUT OF TIME" or "COMFORT ME?"
Ooh, how about STYX/"Too Much Time On My Hands, live?"
Yes yes yes. I just talked about this in another post because I love Revolution Saints.
Ken just did a Styx couple weeks ago on Tommy Shaw I believe it was Blue Collar man so you should check it out. It is really good.
This was from 2006, at Hammersmith Odeon, London, I was there and Coverdale would have been 54 years old!
I always loved that song in the still of the night, but I was always kind of turned off by David Coverdale as it seemed he was trying so hard to be Robert Plant, but now that I have watched this and I’m watching a bio right now on deep purple, I’m getting a lot more respect for the man. Thanks.✊🏼
Actually, he is not that old in this video. It's 2004, so there he was in his early 50's.
I prefer his time on deep purple. It's seems almost another person on whitesnake, not just his face all his singing sounds different.
Cheers from Uruguay.
Please react to Lost Horizon - Heart of Storm
Awesome Ken. I first saw David Coverdale with Deep Purple back in 1973 & still have the concert ticket stubb. I also know that a guitarist by the name of Reb Beach played in Whitesnake. Reb played guitar on the Alice Cooper album The Last Temptation. Just wanted to share~!
Top 🎤. Have you listened to Michele Lippi, the current keyboard player of the Whitesnake? Check it out!
Luppi is a vocal best!
I love all your stuff! Can you please, please do Journey “Mother, Father” Live in Houston 81?!? I’ve been dying for a vocal reaction to that!!!
Patrick Martin jaw droppingly perfect performance.
Please react to tengri on the singer 2018. ua-cam.com/video/H2mvc0miJ-w/v-deo.html As well as ha hyun woo on the king of masked singer. He holds the record for the most wins at 9. vimeo.com/169189206
Love David Coverdale. I remember Deep Purple very well, and my dad shouting "Turn that bloody music down." Ahh happy days, great music, great singers, great musicians. Funny how music transports you back to those great times in your life, maybe not for my dad RIP dad.
Coverdale is a master rock vocalist. Lanny and Doug are absolute monster guitar players. You and Scott V Z can hold your own against them for sure. Wake the Nations was one of your best albums! The track from You/Shout "In Your Face" is a smorgasbord of who's who guest guitar players. Oh, and your vocals aren't half bad either, all over both albums brother ;-) Love your stories and insight during these videos. Steve Morse was a big influence on my guitar playing growing up as were you. I can't play nearly as good as either of you, but love to hear you guys burn! God bless and Rock on!
jcoulter43 Thank you!
David Coverdale and John Bon Jovi are like my singing guides like I strive to sing like them although my deep voice it's hard to hit those high notes
Tommy Aldridge is a beast, what a phenomenom, killer drummer!
Someone has a man crush🤣😁
Not the only one😁
Jöhan Richards SO? (totally).
Perfeito.
I are from Brazil and like to see you sing, perfect.
Hi geraldovjr! Thanks!
LOVE what I heard! GREAT vids Ken! Please keep em coming!
💜✌💜
Lets all go back to the 80s and 90s.I hate today 's music.😢
I seem to be one of the only ones that don’t like this song at all. I fell asleep the first time I heard it. Give me some Saints and Sinners and I’m good to go! 😉
I really like how you're into it. 😀
Love DC. One of my absolute favorites.
Great lesson as always. Think probably this is one of the best live performance ever. Great musicians and David that night was literally on fire. Than you Ken!
Great dvd concert. I beg you, do yourself a favor and watch "Soldier of Fortune" off of Starkers in Tokyo. Greatest recorded Coverdale performance Ive seen.
Boardgames Bourbon Starkers in Tokyo is an awesome album.
I love Lou Gramm too! Amazing singer!
pearlady22 Sure is!
Beautiful singing, Ken!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks Patricia!
